  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an advanced fast reactor concept, KALIMER-600, which satisfies the Generation IV reactor design goals of sustainability, economics, safety, and proliferation resistance. The concept enables an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of the radioactive waste. The core design has been developed with a strong emphasis on proliferation resistance by adopting a single enrichment fuel without blanket assemblies. In addition, a passive residual heat removal system, shortened intermediate heat-transport system piping and seismic isolation have been realized in the reactor system design as enhancements to its safety and economics. The inherent safety characteristics of the KALIMER-600 design have been confirmed by a safety analysis of its bounding events. Research on important thermal-hydraulic phenomena and sensing technologies were performed to support the design study. The integrity of the reactor head against creep fatigue was confirmed using a CFD method, and a model for density-wave instability in a helical-coiled steam generator was developed. Gas entrainment on an agitating pool surface was investigated and an experimental correlation on a critical entrainment condition was obtained. An experimental study on sodium-water reactions was also performed to validate the developed SELPSTA code, which predicts the data accurately. An acoustic leak detection method utilizing a neural network and signal processing units were developed and applied successfully for the detection of a signal up to a noise level of -20 dB. Waveguide sensor visualization technology is being developed to inspect the reactor internals and fuel subassemblies. These research and developmental efforts contribute significantly to enhance the safety, economics, and efficiency of the KALIMER-600 design concept.

  • The current road traffic signal controller developed in the 1990s has limitations in flexibility and scalability due to power supply problems, various communication methods, and hierarchical black box structures for various equipment and devices installed to improve traffic safety for road users and autonomous cooperative driving. In this paper, we designed a road traffic safety facilities equipment and devices integrated management system that can cope with the rapidly changing future traffic environment by solving the using direct current(DC) and power supply problem through the power over ethernet(PoE) technology and centralized data-driven control through message broker technology. In addition, a data-driven real-time control method for road traffic safety facilities equipment and devices operating based on time series data was implemented and verified.

  • As the global electric vehicle (EV) market expands, eco-friendly EV that complement performance and safety problems continue to be released and the market is growing. However, in the case of EVs, the inconvenience of charging, safety problems such as electric shock, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems caused by the interlocking of various electronic components are problems that must be solved in EVs. The use of wireless power transmission technology can solve the problem of safety by not dealing with high current and high voltage directly and solving the inconvenience of charging EVs. In this paper, in order to reduce EMI a wireless charging control module, which is a key electronic component of WPT of EV. EMI reduction was designed through simulation of problems such as resonance and impedance that may occur in the power supply and signal distortion between high-speed communication that may occur in the signal part. Therefore, through the EMI reduction design with power integrity and signal integrity, the WPT wireless charging control module for electric vehicles reduces 10 dBu V/m and 15 dBu V/m, respectively, in 800 MHz to 1 GHz bands and 1.5 GHz bnad.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on the ESR signal intensity of irradiated crabs and the stability of these radicals under 9 weeks of storage. Swimming and small crabs were irradiated with doses of 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 kGy using a Co-60 irradiator at ambient temperature. A claw, a walking leg and a cars- pace of the crab pieced and dried were placed in a resonant quart tube within an EPR X-band spectrometer. The irradiated crabs presented an asymmetric absorption in shape at g$_1$=2.002 $\pm$ 0.003 and g$_2$=1.998$\pm$0.005, and were different from the non-irradiated ones. The intensity of the ESR signals was greatest in the claw, intermediate in the carapace and lowest in the walking leg. Samples given low and high doses of irradiation could also be distinguished. The ESR signal after irradiation was stable, even after a 9-week storage.

  • To investigate signals of adverse drug reactions of finasteride by using the Korea Adverse Events Reporting System (KAERS) database. This pharmacovigilance was based on the database of the drug-related adverse reactions reported spontaneously to the KAERS from 2013 to 2017. This study was conducted by disproportionality analysis. Data mining analysis was performed to detect signals of finasteride. The signal was defined by three criteria as proportional reporting ratio (PRR), reporting odds ratio (ROR), and information component (IC). The signals of finasteride were compared with those of the other drugs; dutasteride (similar mechanism of action), minoxidil (different mechanism but similar indications for alopecia), silodosin (different mechanism but similar indications for BPH). It was examined whether the detected signals exist in drug labels in Korea. The total number of adverse event-drug pairs was reported 2,665,429 from 2013 to 2017, of which 1,426 were associated with finasteride. The number of investigated signals of finasteride was 42. The signals that did not include in the drug label were 29 signals, including mouth dry, hypotension, dysuria etc. The signal of finasteride was similar to that of dutasteride and silodosin but was different to that of minoxidil. Early detection of signals through pharmacovigilance is important to patient safety. We investigated 29 signals of finasteride that do not exist in drug labels in Korea. Further pharmacoepidemiological studies should be needed to evaluate the signal causality with finasteride.

  • Walking is basic and important means of transportation for human. Although recently safety for pedestrians relating to traffic safety is considered to be important, efforts and interest for pedestrian safety are very unsatisfactory. Thus, it is needed to develop a pedestrian safety index which could be used to plan pedestrian safety program and to reduce/prevent pedestrian accidents. In this study, the Pedestrian Safety Index about 10 cities in Gyeongnam Province was developed using 5 factors highly influencing on pedestrian safety, which are the five year average pedestrian accidents per 100,000 population, the year 2009 pedestrian accidents per 100,000 population, crosswalk signal obey rate, jaywalking rate, and the year 2009 pedestrian accidents for children under 14 years and the elderly over 65 years. The perfect score for the index is 100. As the score becomes nearer to 100, pedestrian safety becomes better. The pedestrin safeties of Changwon, Gimhae and Masan are good and those of Sachon and Tongyong are bad. Tongyong's low score at the index is due to high pedestrian accidents rate only and Sachon's low score is due to high pedestrian accidents rate and jaywalking. At the pedestrian safety index of 10 counties of Gyeongnam Province, the pedestran safeties of Hamyang and Hapchon are good and those of Haman, Hadong and Gosung are bad.

  • Whether a person is feeling sleepy or reasonably awake is important safety information in many areas, such as humans operating in traffic or in heavy industry. The changes of body signals have been mostly researched by looking at electroencephalogram(EEG) signals but more and more other medical signals are being examined. In our study, an electrocardiogram(ECG) signal is measured at a sampling rate of 100 Hz and used to try to distinguish the possible differences in signal between the two states: awake and drowsy. Practical tests are conducted using a wireless sensor node connected to a wearable ECG sensor, and an ECG signal is transmitted wirelessly to a base station connected to a server PC. Through the QRS complex in the ECG analysis it is possible to obtain much information that is helpful for diagnosing different types of cardiovascular disease. A program is made with MATLAB for digital signal filtering and graphing as well as recognizing the parts of the QRS complex within the signal. Drowsiness detection is performed by evaluating the R peaks, R-R interval, interval between R and S peaks and the duration of the QRS complex..
