  • This paper presents new pedestrian signal timings considering pedestrian demand Pedestrian characteristics, and land use which were obtained by Pedestrian characteristics field survey and pedestrian signal operation survey. Pedestrian signal timings suggested were compared to the existing pedestrian signal timings by using real field data. pedestrian characteristics field survey was conducted to collect pedestrian crossing speed data and reaction time data. Sixteen areas in Seoul were selected for the data collection. The average pedestrian crossing speed was 1.30m/sec and the 15th Percentile speed was 1.11m/sec. The average reaction time was 2.24 seconds. Pedestrian crossing speed differs by land use, road width. pedestrian age, sex, and number of Pedestrians. Reaction time also differs by road width, pedestrian age, and number of pedestrians. Statistical testing was performed to secure reliability of the collected data.

  • This paper proposes a portable cable fault detection system with automatic fault distinction and distance measurement using time-frequency correlation and reference signal elimination method and automatic fault classification algorithm in order to have more accurate fault determination and location detection than conventional time domain refelectometry (TDR) system despite increased signal attenuation due to the long distance to cable fault location. The performance of the developed system method was validated via an experiment in the test field constructed for the standardized performance test of power cable fault location equipments. The performance evaluation showed that accuracy of the developed system is less than 1.34%. Also, an error of automatic fault type and location by detection of phase and peak value through elimination of the reference signal and normalization of correlation coefficient and automatic fault classification algorithm not occurred.

  • In this study, an algorithm for diagnosis of dc motor with winding open fault is suggested. A dc motor used in this paper, is consisted of a permanent magnet field stator, double 16-turn series winding rotating armature with 12-slot, brush and 12-commutator, etc. A current signal of dc motor which has brushes and commutatorswas considered for fault diagnosis. By commutation, this current signal shows different wave form according to the fault condition of the motor. In this study, operation of the data was easily through simplification of the current signal by the signal processing. Computation method is presented reference value($C_{dv}$) for diagnosis of winding open fault and verified through experiments that can be diagnosed using the reference value($C_{dv}$).

  • Across-wind response is often the cause of significant structural vibrations that in turn cause fatigue damage to welded and other connections. The efficacy of low-cost helical strakes to mitigate such adverse response is presented for a traffic signal structure. Field observations are made on a prototype structure in a natural wind environment without and with helical strakes installed on the cantilevered arm. Through continuous monitoring, the strakes were found to be effective in reducing across-wind response at wind speeds less than 10 m/s. Estimates of fatigue life are made for four different geographical locations and wind environments. Results for the class of traffic signal structure show that helical arm strakes are most effective in locations with benign wind environments where the average annual wind speed is not more than the vortex shedding wind speed, which for this investigation is 5 m/s. It is concluded that while strakes may be effective, it is not the panacea to mitigating connection fatigue at all locations.

  • In this paper, a digital signal processing circuit for Position Sensitive Detectors(PSDs) is introduced to substitute the conventional analog signal processing circuit and to compensate disadvantages of the PSD. In general, the analog circuits have the problems such as noise accumulation, sensitivity for environmental changes, and high cost for manufacturing. Moreover, the intrinsic nonlinearity problem of the PSD makes it hard to measure the position accurately because it is difficult to be overcome the problem by using the conventional analog circuits, which can be solved by using the digital signal processing circuit. The circuit is implemented by using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The Pulse Amplitude Modulation(PAM) method is used for reducing the environmental noise effect, and a linear interpolation logic is used to compensate the ...

This system includes 5 pairs of ultrasonic transducers. ultrasonic signal processing unit using switch matrix method, computation algorithm of gas flow rate, spool piece type multi-path pipe unit. We have developed enhanced type of main ultrasonic signal processing unit using switch matrix method fer multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter. Also, we have developed the new transmitting & receiving method of ultrasonic waves and the new signal processing algorithm for the computation of ultrasonic transit time from received ultrasonic waves. In this study, we have designed more compact signal processing unit compared with the conventional hardware system of multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter. We have confirmed its reliability for multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter through the laboratory test using calibration system. In the future. we will perform the field test for the developed system in the POSCO gas line.

  • In 1896, Rayleigh was appointed as Scientific Advisor of the Trinity House. Rayleigh applied his knowledge of sound to developing effective fog signals during his IS-year tenure at the maritime organization. Rayleigh's expertise on acoustics met an appropriate field for its application during his improvement of the fog signal for the institution. Rayleigh's activities at the Trinity House were motivated by his desire to make contribution to the public. During his research on the fog signal, Rayleigh effectively employed his expertise acquired through his mathematical and experimental research on sound and vibration since the 1860s. Rayleigh developed effective horns for emitting fog signals and proposed various ways of overcoming the weaknesses of sound signals available at that time. While attempting to solve the problem of the attenuation of sound signals disseminating through the air, Rayleigh put foundations of atmospheric acoustics by developing new scientific theories about it.

  • Power line communication(PLC) is a kind of communication technology, was made use of controling a frequency narrow band, but as the PLC technology developing, in the near future get to the commercial step that is broadband PLC upto 30 MHz. This paper deals with the PLC of electric railway using capacitive signal coupler. An AC arrester for catenary is used as a capacitive signal coupler, has the characteristic of capacitor. As a result of field test, a messenger wire used PLC contain much of conducted noise about overall frequency band and also signal attenuation rate increased with increasing frequency between two points. and the communication speed of PLC used messenger wire is 793kbps at a distance of 40m. Experimental results show the possibility of PLC using a messenger wire and an AC arrester for catenary at electric railway.

  • Ultraprecision machining and MEMS technology have been taken more and more important position in machining of microparts. Micro endmilling is one of the prominent technology that has wide spectrum of application field ranging from macro parts to micro products. Also, the method of micro-grooving using micro endmilling is used widely owing to many merit, but has problems of precision and quality of products due to tool wear and tool fracture. This investigation deals with state monitoring using acoustic emission(AE) signal in the micro-grooving. Characteristic evaluation of AE raw signal, AE hit and frequency analysis for state monitoring is also presented in the paper.

  • In this paper, we propose a new listen-in technique to overcome the problems and the shortcomings which could possibly meet in the previous listen-in methods to deal with the blind signal manually according to operator's decision. In the proposed listen-in method, receiving the signals, classifying the modulation types, and demodulating the signals can be done automatically without operator's intervention. We realize the listen-in technology by developing the high speed frequency tuner, the automatic modulation recognizer, and the signal demodulator. In conclusion, we confirm and show that the developed equipment has a good performance in classifying the modulation type through the computer simulation and the field test.
