  • This study has analysed actual overbreak, shotcrete rebound and the ratio between the actual quantity of shotcrete to designed shotcrete measured during a NATM tunnel construction. The measured shotcrete rebound was about 7.2% in average which was about half the allowable rebound (15%), showing shotcrete spraying was performed well. Based on the measurement of excavated tunnel shape, average overbreak was about 28.5cm after tunnel excavation by drill and blasting method. This was about 260% of allowable overbreak. In addition, due to the rebound and overbreak actual amount of shotcrete used in the tunnelling work was about 116.5 % of the designed value. According to the field measurement the ratio of actual shotcrete to designed value showed some relation with standard support pattern, but the size of overbreak did not show the correlation with standard support pattern. Hence current design specifications stating the size of overbreak based entirely on standard support pattern should perhaps be reestablished. The insight into the design guideline regarding overbreak and shotcrete.

  • The quality control of tunnel support construction is very important to maintain a long term stability of tunnel. Especially, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete should be necessary to investigate practically the condition of quality control in the construction site. In order to perform this study, the design criteria and specifications relevant to steel fiber reinforced shotcrete are reviewed. And the comparison is made between the bearing capacity of the several shotcrete layers, based on the equivalence of the bending moments. Eight tunnel construction sites are also investigated carefully to examine and analyse the characteristics of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete especially including strength and mixing condition of steel fiber. Based on the results, it is founded the items to be improved in the future. In addition, the modification program for the specifications of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete is suggested.

  • "Mortar or concrete pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface" is called Shotcrete. Models that predict shotcrete design parameters (e.g. compressive strength, slump etc) from any mixing proportions of admixtures could save considerable experimentation time consumed during trial and error based procedures. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been widely used for similar purposes; however, such models have been rarely applied on shotcrete design. In this study 19 samples of shotcrete test panels with varying quantities of water, steel fibers and silica fume were used to determine their slump, cost and compressive strength at different ages. A number of 3-layer Back propagation Neural Network (BPNN) models of different network architectures were used to train the network using 15 samples, while 4 samples were randomly chosen to validate the model. The predicted compressive strength from linear regression lacked accuracy with $R^2$ value of 0.36. Whereas, outputs from 3-5-3 ANN architecture gave higher correlations of $R^2$ = 0.99, 0.95 and 0.98 for compressive strength, cost and slump parameters of the training data and corresponding $R^2$ values of 0.99, 0.99 and 0.90 for the validation dataset. Sensitivity analysis of output variables using ANN can unfold the nonlinear cause and effect relationship for otherwise obscure ANN model.

  • Fiber reinforced shotcrete began to be used in tunnel constructions because it facilitates and expedites the construction process, and improves reinforcement properties. As one of the most widely used forms of shotcrete used in tunneling, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete offers excellent strength and ductility and allows quick reinforcement. However, steel fibers tend to lump together in cement matrix, and low levels of water and acid resistance cause corrosion in steel fiber, resulting in cracks and delamination. In particular, rebound and backlash of steel fiber is significantly increased during steel fiber reinforced shotcrete construction, compromising the flexural toughness and quality of shotcrete. In order to resolve the problems associated with steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and improve the application, durability, and cost-effectiveness of shotcrete, this paper proposes methods for manufacturing and constructing tunnels with multiple polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete. We performed experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed shotcrete, and the experimental results indicate that the multiple polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete proposed in this paper offers outstanding performance that meets various construction design criteria.

  • The development of high-performance shotcrete lining is essential in improving the long-term durability of tunnels and in introducing single-shell tunnelling methods, where shotcrete as well as rockbolts are used as permanent support members. In this paper, new and advanced admixtures to improve shotcrete performance are introduced. In addition, requirements for mechanical properties as well as test items for quality control of shotcrete are summarized. A case study on the application of the pneumatic pin penetration test which can estimate compressive strength of shotcrete more easily and quickly is also illustrated. Previous studies to analyze the behaviors of shotcrete lining by considering its transient hardening and to carry out the sensitivity analysis of the design parameters of shotcrete lining are discussed to give fundamental concepts on rock-support interactions. Representative single-shell tunnelling methods where high-performance shotcrete lining is applied as a permanent support are also introduced.

  • This study has analysed overbreaks, shotcrete rebound and the ratio between the actual quantity of shotcrete sprayed compared to designed quantity measured during a NATM tunnel construction. Based on the measurements of size of the excavated tunnel faces, an average overbreak was about 28.5 cm, which is about 260% of allowable overbreak. The measured shotcrete rebound was about 7.2% in average which is about half the allowable rebound(15%). In addition, due to overbreaks and rebound the actual quantity of shotcrete used in the tunnelling work was about 116.5 % of the designed value. It has been found from the field measurements that the quantity of shotcrete showed some relation with rock mass rating(RMR) and the standard guideline of tunnel supports, but the size of overbreak showed less correlation with RMR and the standard guideline of tunnel supports. Hence, the current tunnel design specifications stating the size of overbreak based entirely on the standard guideline for tunnel supports should perhaps be reestablished. The insight into the design guideline regarding overbreak and actual quantity of shotcrete will be reported and discussed.

  • Shotcrete adhesive strength in large section tunnels in jointed rock masses plays an important role in preventing rock block from falling and shotcrete debonding due to blasting vibration. Nevertheless, it has not been considered as a major factor such as shotcrete compressive strength in design and construction. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect on shotcrete adhesive strength for large-sectioned tunnels. First, the parametric study using numerical model similar to Holmgren's punch-loaded test was executed for various range of adhesive strength. It shows that the shotcrete bearing capacity is linearly proportioned to the adhesive strength between shotcrete layer and blocks. And then, distinct element analysis of a jointed rock tunnel for an adhesive strength of 1 MPa and a conventional fully-bonded condition between the shotcrete layer and the excavation face was compared in order to evaluate the effect of the shotcrete adhesive strength.

  • Steel fiber reinforced shotcrete in tunneling construction has some problems in terms of constructability, durability and lots of rebound wastage. In order to resolve these problems, this pater proposes polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete technology. And this paper presents the results of experimental construction of the polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete technology. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete suggested in this paper shows outstanding mechanical performance that meets various Korean tunnel construction design criteria. 2. In addition, the results of experimental constructions show that the polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete creates less rebound and wasted product than the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the polyamide fiber reinforced shotcrete technology can be used as economical and environmentally friendly construction of tunnel.
