Nest density was determined and tree and soil characteristics around Nycticorax nycticorax breeding sites and non-breeding sites on Bamsum Island in Seoul were analyzed from May 2005 to October 2006 to identify breeding site preferences of N. nycticorax and the effects of N. nycticorax nesting density on nesting tree structure and soil characteristics. N. nycticorax preferred trees of low height ($3.5{\sim}6$ m) and small diameter at breast height in high density Salix communities. Excrement of heron juveniles was dropped on the soil under the nests. The soil nutrient content under nests (P: 126.0 mg/kg, N: 202.8 mg/kg, EC: 549 ${\mu}S/cm$, pH 4.7) was much higher than that of control soils from Bamsum Island not enriched by heron excrement (P: 41.5 mg/kg, N: 42.0 mg/kg, EC: 342 ${\mu}S/cm$, pH 5.1). Formation of Salix communities on the shores of Bamsum Island is ongoing, and their structure has been directly influenced by annual flooding. After flooding, the nutrient content differences between heron-affected soils and control soils were not significant. This might be the reason that Salix communities on Bamsum were not affected by nesting herons as in other terrestrial communities where herons nest. This result indicates that flooding plays an important role in sustaining Salix communities on Bamsum Island where herons nest. The results of this study may increase understanding of N. nycticorax breeding behavior which may be useful for conservation planning.

There are many long and round shape shores due to terrain characteristics in Daecheong reservoir. Therefore it is indicated different spatial distribution of algae every year since the stream is being regulated by these terrain characteristics and reservoir operation about inflow and outflow discharge. Also oversupply of nutrient salt from tributaries of Daecheong reservoir where pollutants were concentrated generates massive growth of algae and depending on hydrological, reservoir operation condition, those proliferated algae at the stagnant tributaries moves to the mainstream of Daecheong reservoir which could create problems of water quality. In this study, it was analyzed the tendency of algae generation by examining algae occurring status for the last 4 years since 2008, and implemented hydraulic analysis at Daecheong reservoir through numerical tracer simulation by applying 3-dimensional hydrodynamic model, ELCOM. Also it was implemented a quantitative analysis of causal relationship based on the algae generation tendency and hydraulic behavior at Daecheong reservoir. Through numerical tracer simulation in this study, it could be noticed the degree of spread of inflow indicated similar trend to the algae occurring status at Daecheong reservoir and verified the different tendency of algae generation in 2011 unlike previous year caused by the rise of water temperature.

The current study analyzed appropriateness of abandoned rice paddy wetlands as habitats for the Amphibia by assessing functions and value of abandoned rice paddy wetlands within land development districts as a habitat for living creatures and researching into the Amphibia living in the subject districts. For this purpose, the study designated abandoned rice paddy wetlands within Hwaseong A District and Pangyo B District under land development as subject lands. Those wetlands went through succession after abandonment of farming. Detailed study results are as follows. From classification of wetland types and an analysis of their characteristics, it was found that herbaceous plants such as smartweed communities, horsetail communities and reed communities, and woody plants such as pussy willow communities appeared in both districts. These abandoned rice paddy wetlands shows typical characteristics of palustrine wetlands. As a result of a vegetation structure research, it was observed that succession has been progressed for at least over 2~3 years. In assessment of wetland functions by item, it was found that they are developing into fine wetlands in terms of functions because they are ranked over Moderate Class except separate distance from streams. Also from a research into animals living in the abandoned rice paddy wetlands, it was found that main inhabitants are Rana nigromaculata,Rana dybowskii, Hyla japonica, Bufo bufo gargarizans, etc. It can be confirmed that the abandoned rice paddy wetlands are providing appropriate conditions as habitats to the Amphibia in a view that those species have life cycles of inhabitation (shores and wetlands) - egg-laying (rice paddy, puddles and swampy places) - hibernation (rice field banks and swampy places). From this point of view, it was found that abandoned rice paddy wetlands that developed because of abandonment of farming can be used as means to improve structure and functions of habitats.

In this research, a habitat model for Chinemys reevesii is suggested based on the components and variables of the Habitat Suitability Index which was determined through a series of literature researches, site surveys, and behavioral analysis. After reviewing the general habitat requirements, the site surveys(9 reservoirs) from July to December 2010, and the behavioral analysis of five Chinemys reevesii, the relationship between the behavioral and habitat use pattern was evaluated. According to the site surveys and behavioral analysis, the ecological core area(FK 50%) was about 0.96ha on average, the influence area(FK 90%) 4.22ha, and the home range was about $37.75{\pm}17.26m$ on average. As for the habitat use pattern of Chinemys reevesii, it travels through canals, and is influenced by the surrounding land uses. Also when there is a lack of food, the home range increases, and during hibernation, Chinemys reevesii prefers to be in an area within 1~2m range of water shores of fine textured soil and aquatic plants. After analyzing the information, the HSI standard was set and its components were determined as food, sunbathing and cover, aquatic environment, and spatial relationships. And the variables and the ranges of the components was determined as aquatic plant cover(0~49.81%), sandy area($3{\sim}13m^2$) and water velocity(0~60cm/s) etc. Lastly, plans and sections of the habitat model is provided designed according to the information from the researches, and problems to consider during habitat restoration was suggested in order to help understand about Chinemys reevesii habitat.
Tidal flat, classified as wetland of coastal zone, is critical transitional zone connecting sea with land, and fulfills a variety of functions necessary for maintaining coastal ecosystem. Although it is critical to protect and strengthen its functions of coastal wetlands, tidal flat has been mainly viewed as areas for development in Korea. Therefore, this study provides with the effective mitigation measures so as to minimize adverse impacts of tidal flat reclamation projects on the proper environmental values. So far, coastal development has not considered as important the fact that development site consists of tidal flat in site selection. Therefore, large scale of tidal flats was abused. Problems were emerged only after tidal flat development was already planned. The original plan had to be revised. To rectify the problem, impacts of development on the environment need to be discussed based on the initial development planning. Particularly, sandy beaches, rocky shores and shallow areas, underwater forest including seagrass beds as well as the tidal flat in good condition should be excluded from development site.
Formwork is a temporary structure that supports its weight and that of freshly placed concrete as well as construction live loads. In constructions site, pipe supports are usually used as shores which are consisted of the slab formwork. The strength of a pipe support is decreasing as it is frequently being used at the construction site. Among the accidents and failures that occur during concrete construction, there are many formwork failures which usually happen at the time concrete is being placed. The objective of this study is to find out the strength change of used pipe support and unused pipe supports according to aging. In this study, 2857 pipe supports were prepared. Among these pipe supports, 2337 pipe supports were lent to the construction companies free of charge. 520 pipe supports were kept on the outside. Compressive strength was measured by knife edge test and plate test at each 3 month. Test results show that the strength of unused pipe supports as well as used pipe supports was decreasing according to age, use frequency and load carrier, and the strength of used pipe supports was lower than the strength of unused pipe supports at the same age. So, the strength of used pipe supports from 191 days to present day was not satisfied the specification of KS F 8001. In this study, the strength of pipe support according to age, use frequency and load carrier was predicted using SPSS 12.0. It was known that the strength of pipe support using for 5 years was reduced to 42.8%. According to these results, it shows that attention has to be paid to formwork design using used pipe supports. Therefore, the present study results will be able to provide a finn base to prevent formwork collapses.
Purpose: This study is to analyze the image classification using Convolution Neural Network and Transfer Learning for Jeju Island and to suggest related implications. As the biggest tourist destination in Korea, Jeju Island encounters environmental issues frequently caused by marine debris along the seaside. The ever-increasing volume of plastic waste requires multidirectional management and protection. Research design, data and methodology: In this study, the deep learning CNN algorithm was used to train a number of images from Jeju clean and polluted beaches. In the process of validating and testing pre-processed images, we attempted to explore their applicability to coastal tourism applications through probabilities of classifying images and predicting clean shores. Results: We transformed and augmented 194 small image dataset into 3,880 image data. The results of the pre-trained test set were 85%, 70% and 86%, and then its accuracy has increased through the process. We finally obtained a rapid convergence of 97.73% and 100% (20/20) in the actual training and validation sets. Conclusions: The tested algorithms are expected to implement in applications for tourism service distribution aimed at reducing coastal waste or in CCTVs as a detector or indicator for residents and tourists to protect clean beaches on Jeju Island.
This study examined the effects of the minimum horizontal load on the structural behaviors and safety of system supports. The minimum horizontal load was frequently ignored in the design of system supports even though the level of that load was specified in the code and guide in Korea such as 'Standard Specification in Temporary Construction' and 'Guide to Installation of Shores for a Concrete Bridge'. To examine the effects of considering the minimum horizontal load, the finite element analysis were performed for various system supports. By varying installing parameters of system supports such as the vertical member spacing, the installation height, and the thickness of slab, the maximum combined stress ratios were estimated to investigate the structural safety of system supports. The results showed similar axial stress in vertical members but an increase in bending stress with a consideration of the horizontal load. The combines stress ratios are remarkably increased due to the consideration of the horizontal load. Consequently, the system supports, which were initially estimated to be safe when only the vertical loads were considered, were changed to be unsafe in most cases by the effects of the both the vertical and horizontal stresses. Therefore, the minimum horizontal load following the code and the guide is an essential load that could control the structural safety of system supports.
The life history of Obelia bicuspidata Clarke, 1975 (Hydrozoa, Campanulariidae) was studied in its habitats, Jak-yk Island, Korea and in the laboratory It grows mainly attaching to the under sides of small rocks immersed in muddy shores, or the shade surfaces of oyster shells. The hydoids liberate medusae. The medusa buds develope twice per year, during from March to June and from September to October The optimum water temperature for the hydroids is between 4$^{\circ}C$ and 8$^{\circ}C$ and at the temperature above 9$^{\circ}C$ the hydroids begin to degenerate. In August the surface water temperature is around $25^{\circ}C$ and the hydrothecae are all disappeared. The hydroids grow best during from February to May. The medusae are small, 0.3 mm high, 0.45 mm wide and require about 9 days at room temperature (about 2$0^{\circ}C$) for mature after releasing. Obelia bicuspidata turned out to be boreal species in this work.
According to the result of the recent survey on the current condition of loss of the fishing gears in the East, West and South seas, it is estimated that 50% of the fishing gears used for coastal trap and gill net fisheries are lost every year and 20~30% of those used for inshore trap and gill net fisheries are lost. It is reported that such loss of fishing gears leads to the loss of about 10% of 1.7M tons of the total annual catch from the gill nets and traps along the country's coasts and shores, which amounts to 15~170K tons. Submerged marine litters that have recently been accumulated because of the washed out or lost fishing gears significantly affect the development of fisheries resources as well as the natural environment. The purpose of this study is to identify the damages that the ever-increasing submerged marine litters of washed out fishing gears would have on the fishery and to analyze the effects of the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business on the fishery management. For this, the economic analysis was carried out for the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business based on the fishermen's expenses and earnings and their catch. The result of the analysis shows that the submerged marine litter collection business is quite effective in certain areas but rarely effective in other areas. However, taking into consideration that the litter collection would contribute to protecting the marine environment as well as the fisheries resources, it is expected to have a significant impact on the protection of the marine environment even in those areas where it is not effective for the protection of the fisheries resources.
