  • LNG carriers have, up to 2006, mainly been driven by steam turbines. The Boil-Off Gas from the LNG cargo tanks has so far been used as fuel. This is a costly solution that requires special skills during construction and operation. Alternative propulsion systems offer far better fuel economical efficiency than steam turbines. Instead of previous practice using Boil-Off Gas as a fuel, the Re-liquefaction system establishes a solution to liquefy the Boil-Off Gas and return the LNG to the cargo tanks. This Re-liquefaction of Boil-Off Gases on LNG carriers results in increased cargo deliveries and allows owners and operators to choose the most optimum propulsion system. In this study, thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed on two type of LNG Re-liquefaction system which was designed and adopted for the Q-Flex(216,000$m^3$) and Q-Max(266,000$m^3$) LNG carrier under construction at Korea ship yards and variable key factor was simulated to compare efficiency, power and nitrogen consumption of each Re-liquefaction system.

  • In the eLoran system, the Loran Data Channel (LDC) is used to provide precise timing and positioning. The LDC message can be modulated with the Eurofix method, which modulates the transmission time of the 3rd-8th pulse not used for navigation, and the 9th pulse method, which modulates data using the 9th additional pulse after the existing 8 Loran pulses. In this paper, we analyzed the reception performance of the LDC message transmitted from the eLoran transmitter according to the modulation method. The eLoran testbed transmitter in Incheon was set to transmit LDC messages simultaneously with the 9th pulse modulation method and the Eurofix modulation method. Then, the LDC messages stored in the databases of the eLoran differential stations in Incheon and Pyeongtaek were analyzed in terms of the message reception rate according to the modulation method. Using the navigation aid management ship Inseong No. 1, the range of LDC message reception of actual sea users near Incheon Port was also analyzed. The results of this study are expected to be utilized in the full operational capability service after the eLoran pilot service.

  • Navigation simulators have been used in many marine schools and manne training centers since the early 1960's. But these simulators were very expens~ve and were almost limited only in one engine system. In this paper, a catamaran with twin engine system. controlled by two remote control levers and its economic simulator based on a personal computer shall be introduced. One of the main features of catamaran is to control variously its progressing direction. In the static state, a catamaran can move into all the directions and in the dynamic state, ship can change immediately the heading and speed. Although a good navigator can skillfully operate one engine system, it is difficult to control smoothly the catamaran of twin engine system without any threat for the safety of passengers. Thus. in order to bring up the expert navigators. the development of a simulator which makes the training effective is necessary, Therefore, in this paper, a Fuzzy Inference Technique based Maneuvering Simulator for catamaran with twin engine system was developed. In general. in order to develop a catamaran simulator for effective training, first of all. its mathematical model must be acquired. According to the acquired system modeling. the dynamics of simulator is determined, But the proposed technique can omit a complex and tedious mathematical modeling procedures by using the fuzzy inference, which dependent upon only experiences of an expert and can design an efficient training program for unskillful navigators. This developed simulator was consisted of two fuzzy inference routines and two remote control levers, and was focused on effective training of navigators for the safe maneuvering to avoid a collision in a harbor.

  • In order to perform scientific evaluation of dredge results, it is needed to construct the system which is able to manage and evaluate the work process by monitoring in real-time the dredge process such as dredge ship position, dredge depth and dredge volume. This research aims to develop the hydrographic dredge surveying system adding water depth measurement method to both precise positioning and navigation methods using GPS, which allows a high rate of measurement and long distances between the control point and dredging points, operate in all weather conditions, and does not require line of sight to points. We constructed Beacon DGPS-based hydrographic dredger guidance and position management system and developed the operation program which makes the dredge operation perform as monitoring work situation in real-time. It is expected that this developed system will be able to contributes to reducing ultimately the cost in hydrographic dredging or hydrographic construction industries.

  • On December of 2003, IMO's $23^{rd}$ Assembly discussed 'Guidelines on places of refuge for ships in need of assistance' At the discussion, Res. A.949(23) has been selected to appoint recommended place of refuge for countries signatory to the IMO Convention. IMO defines "Places of Refuge" as a places where a ship in need of assistance can take action to enable it to stabilize its condition and reduce the hazards to navigation, and to protect human life and the environment. Appointing and managing a Place of refuge can be a delicate problem because of its close connection to each country's coastal and environmental protection policies. However, in case of marine accident, the appointment or management of the place of refuge has a potential to avoid further damage and reduce to the minimum any environmental and estate losses. Currently a number of foreign countries, designated and operated a place of refuge. But, place of refuge selected method criteria were different by country and also does not have any standardized designating place of refuge model. Therefor, this study suggested the model of assigned places of refuge according to objective indication in order to assign reasonable and efficient places of refuge in domestic waters in the future by investigating and analyzing imported facts in considering the assignment of places of refuge in foreign countries and describing these imported data into quantitative value. In designating the model place of refuge, the final place of refuge location was presented by evaluating the probability of marine accidents, analyzing the location, and evaluating the supporting establishment.

  • The IMO manoeuvrability standard was established for preventing sea accidents such as collisions and strandings due to the lack of manoeuvrability. The standard of ship manoeuvrability enforced by resolution MSC.137(76) has been applied to vessels of 100m or more in length and all chemical tankers and gas carriers regardless of the length, which were constructed on or after 1 July 1994. The IMO manoeuvrability standard is able to be divided into three kinds as followings; (1) Turning capability standard: Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by turning cir치e test q the actual vessel (2) Course keeping quality standard: Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by 10 deg. and 20 deg. zig-zag tests of the actual vessel. (3) Shortest stopping distance standard: Estimated value in design stage is to be certified by the shortest stopping distance tested by the actual vessel. In this paper, the authors verified the criteria of IMO manoeuvrability standard comparing them with the values resulted from sea trial tests of various kinds q actual vessels and examined separately the validity of all criteria of the standard.

  • The fishing industry in Europe has faced environmental, economic, and social challenges. Since the early 2000s, a key tool in addressing these challenges has been information and communication technology (ICT), which has helped to modernize fishery systems in European Union (EU) countries. The ICT used in EU fisheries can be categorized broadly as 1) macro-technologies such as satellite and other remote sensing technologies in combination with geographical information systems, 2) micro-technologies adapted for fishing vessels such as echo sounders, ship navigation devices, and mobile communication devices to connect fishermen and consumers, and 3) onshore micro-technologies related to internet technology and mobile devices. The European Monitoring Center on Change has used ICT to effectively manage fisheries bio-resources. This use of ICT has contributed to the development of sustainable and competent fisheries in the 2000s, even though the knowledge-sharing practices involved are contrary to the long tradition of autonomy within the fishery industry.

  • The noise level of the navigation bridge as well as topside of the superstructure is dominated by the exhaust gas noise of the high-powered main engine and generator engine of special purpose vessels. In the case of the noise radiated from the top of the funnel. the exhaust pipe can be fitted with a silencer to reduce the propagated noise level. This paper is prepared based on an experimental performance test results of the silencers for generator-engine exhaust gas noise with consideration of air velocity. Two silencers were examined to check the performance of noise reduction in cases of air velocity 0m/s and 32m/s. In the sound reduction test, 400mm and 600mm diameter pipe ducts equipped with an axial fan were used as exhaust gas pipe system in the actual ship. The test procedure and results are presented in detail.

  • It is very important to estimate static squeezing pressure distributions for lining material of sterntube after bearing at dry dock stage since the maximum squeezing pressure value can be one of the significant characteristics representing coming navigation performances of the propulsion system. Moderate oil film pressure between lining material and propulsion shaft is also essential for safe ship service. In this paper, Hertz contact theory is explained to derive static squeezing pressure. Reynolds equation simplified from Navier-Stokes equation is centrally differentiated to numerically obtain dynamic oil film pressures. New shaft alignment technology of nonlinear elastic multi-support bearing elements is also used in order to obtain external forces acting on lining material of bearing. For 300K DWT class VLCC with synthetic bush of sterntube after bearing, static squeezing pressures are calculated using derived external forces and Hertz contact theory. Optimum partial slope of the after bush is presented by parametric shaft alignment analyses. Dynamic oil film pressures are comparatively evaluated for partially bored and unbored after bush. Finally it is proved that the partial slope can drastically reduce oil film pressure during engine running.
