  • This paper deals with the distribution characteristics of the current density and axial magnetic flux density for each slits made on the contact electrode in the vacuum interrupter with axial magnetic field type using 3-dimension finite element analysis. It has been known that the presence of an axial magnetic field parallel to the current flow in the arc plasma can increase the high current breaking capacity of vacuum interrupter by carrying out the arc plasma from constricted mode to diffusion mode. The axial magnetic field is created of itself by current flow in the segments of coil electrode behind the contact electrode. The analyzed results show that if the slits are made in the contact electrode, they can increase the current density and axial magnetic flux density in the contact electrode surface and at the gap distance, which is due to decrease the effect of eddy currents flowing in the contact electrode. The phase shift due to eddy currents, defined 3s time difference between the maximum value of current and axial magnetic field, is decreased still more by increasing the number of slits made in the contact electrode at the center point of gap distance. These results demonstrate that 3-dimension finite element analysis has a great deal of merits in the development and evaluation of new electrode at the design of vacuum interrupter.

  • This paper deals with the distribution characteristics of the current density and axial magnetic flux density on the vacuum interrupter with axial magnetic field type using 3 dimension finite element analysis. An axial magnetic field parallel to the current flow in the arc column can improve the current breaking capacity of vacuum interrupter by affecting the arc mode. The axial magnetic flux density on the contact electrode surface is analyzed by inputting external current as a function of the transient time for sine half wave. And it also is analyzed within the gap distance of the contact electrode. The peak value of current but is decreased with the descending current on the contact electrode surface and within the gap distance of the contact electrode. The residual magnetic field is generated on the contact electrode surface and within the gap distance in the instant of zero current, which is due to the influence of eddy currents. The phase shift due to eddy currents, defined as time difference between the maximum value of current and axial magnetic field, is about 1ms in the center point of gap distance.

  • This paper presents the displacement behavior safety of hollow shafts with an equivalent volume for various cross sectional area using a finite element method. The FEM results indicate that the hollow shafts with X-type or Y-type columns between outer tube, middle tube and inner tube may reduce a maximum displacement at the middle length of hollow shafts. Especially, the load-bearing column of X-type or Y-type hollow shaft is directly connected between outer tube and inner tube without a shift for reducing the vertical displacement. And increased thickness of a load-bearing column is recommended for reducing the vertical displacement and increasing the displacement behavior safety for an equivalent volume of a hollow shaft.

  • Algebraic substructuring (AS) is a state-of-the-art method in eigenvalue computations, especially for large size problems, but, originally, it was designed to calculate only the smallest eigenvalues. In this paper, an updated version of AS is proposed to calculate the interior eigenvalues over a specified range by using a shift value, which is referred to as the shifted AS. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method has better efficiency to compute numerous interior eigenvalues for the finite element models of structural problems than a Lanczos-type method.

  • Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic linear motor consists of two Langevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric resonance modes, the transducer must have a phase shift of 90 degree in space and time. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used to optimize dimension and displacement of the transducer. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured. No-load velocity was 0.28[m/s] and the maximum efficiency was 30[%] in resonance frequency.

  • The tactile force sensor was studied using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The FBG is able to multiplex easily and is immune to electromagnetic environment. A sensor frame was designed to a cantilever beam type. Strain of a beam is related with the peak shift of a bragg wavelength. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for getting an appropriate thickness from 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm thick. FEM results showed that 0.3 mm thick was suitable for the force range 10 N. The force resolutions of 0.039 N and 0.113 N were obtained with optical spectrum analyser and tunable Fabry-Perot filter, respectively.

  • Recently, flexible cages have been introduced in an attempt to absorb and reduce the abnormal load transfer along the anterior parts of the spine. They are designed to be used with the pedicle screw systems to allow some mobility at the index level while containing ROM at the adjacent level. In this study, a finite element (FE) study was performed to assess biomechanical efficacies of the flexible cage when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. The post-operated models were constructed by modifying the L4-5 of a previously-validated 3-D FE model of the intact lumbar spine (L2-S1): (1) Type 1, flexible cage only; (2) Type 2, pedicle screws with flexible rods; (3) Type 3, interbody fusion cage plus pedicle screws with rigid rods; (4) Type 4, interbody fusion cage plus Type 2; (5) Type 5, Type 1 plus Type 2. Flexion/extension of 10 Nm with a compressive follower load of 400N was applied. As compared to the Type 3 (62~65%) and Type 4 (59~62%), Type 5 (53~55%) was able to limit the motion at the operated level effectively, despite moderate reduction at the adjacent level. It was also able to shift the load back to the anterior portions of the spine thus relieving excessively high posterior load transfer and to reduce stress on the endplate by absorbing the load with its flexible shape design features. The likelihood of component failure of flexble cage remained less than 30% regardless of loading conditions when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. Our study demonstrated that flexible cages when combined with posterior dynamic system may help reduce subsidence of cage and degeneration process at the adjacent levels while effectively providing stability at the operated level.

  • Foschi's connector model is used as a basic component in the development of nonlinear analysis programs for timber structures. This paper presents the extension of the model to include the effect of shaft frictional forces. The wood medium is modeled using the Foschi embedment model, while shaft friction is modeled using an elastic Coulomb-type friction model. The initial confining pressure for the case of driven fasteners is accounted for by a lateral shift of the load-embedment curve. The model is used to compute the cyclic response of both driven and inserted fasteners. The results obtained from the cases studied indicate that initial confining pressure and friction do not have a significant effect on the computed hysteretic response, however, they significantly affect the computed amount of fastener withdrawal. This model is particularly well-suited for modeling the hysteretic response of shear walls with moderate fastener withdrawal under lateral cyclic or earthquake loading.
