  • To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).

  • The plastic strain ratio is one of the factors that affect the deep drawability of metal sheets. The plastic strain ratio of fully annealed Cu sheet is low because its texture has {001}<100>. In order to improve the deep drawability of Cu sheet, it is necessary to increase the plastic strain ratio of Cu sheet. This study investigate the increase of plastic strain ratio of a Cu sheet after the first asymmetry rolling and annealing, and the second asymmetry rolling and annealing in air and Ar gas conditions. The average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 0.951 and |ΔR| value was 1.27 in the initial Cu sheet. After the second 30.1% asymmetric rolling and annealing of Cu sheet at 1000℃ in air condition, the average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 1.03 times higher. However, |ΔR| was 0.12 times lower than that of the initial specimen. After the second 18.8% asymmetric rolling and annealing of Cu sheet at 630℃ in Ar gas condition, the average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 1.68 times higher and |ΔR| was 0.82 times lower than that of the initial specimen. These results are attributed to the change of the texture of Cu sheet due to the different annealing conditions.

  • In this research, a study on the characteristics of the liquid sheet formed by two impinging jets is presented. Using the interference phenomena of light, the thickness of the liquid sheet, which seems to heavily affect the size of the droplets, is measured and compared with existing theoretical modelings. Thinner liquid sheet is produced with larger impinging angle, smaller orifice diameter, and higher azimuthal angle but the jet velocity doesn't affect the thickness. More viscous liquid produces thicker liquid sheet. The theoretical modelings predict the same trend as the experiments but the thickness values are overestimated at low azimuthal angles. This difference is gradually decreased as the azimuthal angle is increased: The breakup mechanism of the droplets from the liquid sheet is visualized by a high speed camera. The crest around the edge of the liquid sheet is protruded with the accumulation of liquid at the end of protuberance, which contracts into a spherical shape and then becomes detached when the stem breaks down, producing large droplets with a few small size of satellites.

  • In order to invstigate the influence of die design variables on the quality of the sheared surface in cutting of sandwich sheet metals, the cut-off operation is carried out, which is the typical shearing process in sheet metal forming technology. For experiments we made the cut-off die which can be easily adjusted for die design variables such as blankholding force, pad force and clearance. The sandwich sheet metals considered are clad304(STS304-Al1050-STS304) and anti-vibration sheet metal. The shearing process is visualized by the computer vision system installed in front of the cut-off die and the sheared surface is measured and quantitatively compared with the help of the optical microscope after cut-off operation. From test results it is shown that the shearing mechanisms are different according the material of which sandwitch sheet metal is composed. The influence of die design variable is explored and we found optimal conditions for both sandwich sheet metals. It is expected that this investigation can be utilized to get the better sheared surface.

  • In this paper, the defrosting characteristics of a PTC heating sheet is investigated by means of a defrosting heat source for the fin-tube heat exchanger in a refrigerator The defrosting characteristics of the PTC heating sheet are examined and compared with those of a conventional electric heater experimentally. It is found that the characteristics of the water draining rate with the defrosting time show a smoothly oscillating pattern when the PTC heating sheet Is used, and the drained water is completely melted. The defrosting efficiency of the PTC heating sheet is found to be about 75%, which is about 25% higher than that of the electric heater. Also, the reduction of the defrosting time and the increment of the defrosting efficiency may be obtained by improving the arrangement of the heating elements of the healing sheet. It is shown that the defrosting time of the PTC heating sheet increases linearly with the amount of frost, whereas the defrosting efficiency is nearly constant. When applying the PTC heating sheet to the refrigerating system, one should notice the fact that the defrosting performance of the PTC heating sheet may be degraded due to the repetitive operations.

  • This paper deals with comparison of characteristics of continuous-sheet type low-Tc superconducting (LTS) power supply and discrete-sheet type LTS power supply. These characteristics have been analyzed through experiments. These power supplies consist of two exciters, a rotor, a stator, and a LTS load. A continuous-sheet type has a single continuous niobium (Nb) sheet attached to the inner surface of on the stator. In the case of discrete-sheet type, four separated Nb sheets are used. this experiment is using 1.81 mH LTS magnet load and maximum 30 A dc exciter current. A discrete-sheet type is expected to produce much better pumping rate than a continuous-sheet type. The experimental observations have been compared with the theoretical predictions. In this experiment, the maximum pumping-current has reached about 926 A.

  • In this study in order to make doubly-curved sheet metal effectively a sheet metal forming process has been developed by adopting the flexibility of the incremental forming process and the principle of bending deformation which causes slight deformation to thickness The developed process is an unconstrained forming process with no holder. For this study the experimental equipment is set up with the punch-set which consists of two pairs of lower support-punches and one upper center-punch. In the experiments using aluminum sheet it is found that the curvature of the formed sheet metal is determined by controlling the distance between supporting punches in pairs and the forming depth of the center-punch. and the edge-forming method is proposed for forming the sheet metal into the balanced shape. The equation using process variables such as the distance between supporting punches in pairs and the forming depth of the center-punch is proposed for the prediction of the radii of curvatures of the formed shape and it is corrected by the experimental results and the FEM simulation results about whether springback takes place. It is found that according o the simulation there is a certain set of the distance between a pair of supporting punches and the forming depth of the center-punch which causes a little springback. It is thus shown that the radii of curvatures of the formed sheet metal can be predicated by the corrected equation unless significant springback occurs.

  • It is essential to understand the creep behavior, which shows how long the characteristics of material maintains because press joined molding GMT-Sheet for recycle is usually used in the severe environment. In this study, we predict joining strength of GMT-Sheet for recycle, when lap length was changed. and we will investigate how compression ratio have an effect on creep behavior in press joined molding. The result of experiment of forming condition concerned with joining problem of GMT-Sheet is as followings joining efficiency. of GMT-Sheet, increases as lap joint length I, increases. Increase of compression ratio causes decrease o f joining efficiency after of GMT-Sheet joining. As the result of creep test, GMT-Sheet is easily damaged in high temperature range, because it is sensitive to the temperature

  • Observing of GMT-Sheet in molding conditions, we have investigated unexpected phenomenons of moldings surface. In microscope investigation, we observe that there exist deficiencies on the surface of GMT-Sheet moldings, such as the spherulite, fiber projection, crack, fiber exposure, micro-weldline, pinhole and winding. They are caused to arise unevenness and phenomenons influence polish on surface. Especially, the major cause of the unevenness, effected to surface roughness, is a shrinking of matrix in the process of holding pressure and cooling temperature. The higher holding pressure load in a molding process and the lower demolding temperature in an annealing experiment, the better GMT-Sheet moldings improved its appearance.
