  • This study analyzed the pressure patterns and local pressure of tall buildings with corner modifications (recessed and chamfered corner) using wind tunnel tests and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). POD can distinguish pressure patterns by POD mode and more dominant pressure patterns can be found according to the order of POD modes. Results show that both recessed and chamfered corners effectively reduced wind-induced responses. Additionally, unique effects were observed depending on the ratio of corner modification. Tall building models with recessed corners showed fluctuations in the approaching wind flow in the first POD mode and vortex shedding effects in the second POD mode. With large corner modification, energy distribution became small in the first POD mode, which shows that the effect of the first POD mode reduced. Among building models with chamfered corners, vortex shedding effects appeared in the first POD mode, except for the model with the highest ratio of corner modifications. The POD confirmed that both recessed and chamfered corners play a role in reducing vortex shedding effects, and the normalized power spectral density peak value of modes showing vortex shedding was smaller than that of the building model with a square section. Vortex shedding effects were observed on the front corner surfaces resulting from corner modification, as with the side surface. For buildings with recessed corners, the local pressure on corner surfaces was larger than that of side surfaces. Moreover, the average wind pressure was effectively reduced to 88.42% and 92.40% in RE1 on the windward surface and CH1 on the side surface, respectively.

  • This paper presents preventive and emergency control measures for on line transient stability (security) enhancement. For insecure operating state, generation rescheduling based on a real power generation shift factor (RPGSF) is proposed as a preventive control measure to bring the system back to secure operating state. For emergency operating state, two emergency control strategies namely generator shedding and load shedding have been developed. The proposed emergency control strategies are based on voltage magnitudes and rotor trajectories data available through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed in the systems. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been investigated on IEEE-39 bus test system under different contingency and fault conditions and application results are presented.

  • This paper describes the results of a study for the system characteristics, especislly for the abnormal frequency drop of power system, when a large generation unit such as Kori Nuclear 1 (595MW) pulls out from the system. The automatic load shedding method now adopted in our system was re-studied to ameliorate the above problem. From the results of the study, a new under-frequency relay with an element for detecting the slope of frequency change and with time delay element to raise the lowered frequency to a desired value, was found to be effective, and should be purchased and utilized. By this study, an optimal and concrete load shedding method was recommended for reliable operation of power system.

  • A method for the design of a disk cam with a remote follower is presented. ADAMS software is utilized for the design process. The whole process is applied for the design of a cam profile to be used in a tappet shedding device of a shuttle loom. First the desired motion of the remote follower, the hearld frame in this case, is determined to improve the characteristic of a certain weaving process. Next, the desired displacement data is input to the ADAMS software and the cam profile is obtained as an output. To test the validity of the proposed method, designed cams were actually manufactured and implemented on a experimental loom. And with the help of potentiometer type displacement transducers, the motion of the remote followers were actually recorded. And the result was sufficient to prove the validity of the presented method.

  • In this paper, the algorithm for detecting load shedding based on Wavelet Singular Value Decomposition(WSVD) is proposed. WSVD is method of signal processing which combine Wavelet Transform(WT) and Singular Value Decomposition(SVD) to analyze transients in power system. 345kV Busan transmission system is modeled by EMTP-RV and simulations according to successive change of load capability are conducted. This paper analyzes characteristics of WSVD by using simulation results and proposes algorithm for detecting load shedding.

  • High negative pressure coefficient is formed in the corner of the bluff body structures. For many curtain wall designers this phenomena is of interest because this high negative pressure coefficient is adopted in structural calculation. The present study is aimed to investigate shedding vortex characteristics of two-dimensional rectangular prism flow. Unsteady calculation by finite difference method based upon SOLA is carried out for three aspect ratios(1:1, 1:2, 1:3) of Re=10$^4$ in viscous incompressible flow within infinite domain. Fluctuation of velocity components at various pick-up points and time variation of drag and lift coefficients are analysed by FFT method to reveal shedding vortex frequency patterns. At aspect ratio 1:1, one primary Strouhal number appears for about all pick-up points. At aspect ratio 1:2, two representative Strouhal numbers are classified by pick-up positions and their flows show two different reattachment patterns. For aspect ratio 1:3, frequency spectrum maintains multiple peaks.

  • In previous model- and full-scale studies, high-amplitude vertical vibrations of mast-arm traffic signal structures have been shown to be due to vortex shedding, a phenomenon in which alternatingly shed, low-pressure vortices induce oscillating forces onto the mast-arm causing a cross-wind response. When the frequency of vortices being shed from the mast-arm corresponds to the natural frequency of the structure, a resonant condition is created causing long-lasting, high-amplitude vibrations which may lead to the fatigue failure of these structures. Turbulence in the approach flow is known to affect the cohesiveness of vortex shedding. Results from this full-scale investigation indicate that the surrounding terrain conditions, which affect the turbulence intensity of the wind, greatly influence the likelihood of occurrence of long-lasting, high-amplitude vibrations and also impact whether reduced service life due to fatigue is likely to be of concern.

  • This paper presents a method for optimal load shedding in preserving a system security following abnormal condition as well as a sudden major supply outage. The method takes account of static characteristic of generators control and voltage and system frequency characteristic of loads. The optimization problem is solved by a gradient technique to get the maximal effect by the least quantity of load shedding considering line overloads as well as voltage disturbances and system frequency. The method is illustrated on a 8-bus system. It has been found that the use of the proposed algorithm for model systems alleviate the line overload more efficiently than the former method. It is believed that this method will be useful in security studies and operational planning.

  • Due to a major contingency, the congestion of the transmission may happen in power systems. In order to manage the congestion problem, load curtailment is one of the ways to resolve the problem. It is essential that the systematic and effective mechanism for the load shedding be developed. In this paper, the load shedding algorithm using the linear programming for the congestion problems by a major contingency is proposed. The simulations of the proposed algorithm are performed for the power system of Korea and their results are presented.

  • When a bulk power system experiences a serious disturbance or heavy load trip, the system frequency may drop and even collapse if the total generating power does not supply the system demand sufficiently. Since an isolated power system possesses a lower inertia and comes with limited reserves, the load shedding by under frequency relay becomes an important strategy to keep system frequency. This paper presents a scheme to determine the load shedding criteria by using the rate of change of frequency when the large disturbance happens.
