  • In the current study, the free vibrational behavior of a Porous Micro (PM) beam which is integrated with Functionally Graded Piezoelectric (FGP) layers with initial curvature is considered based on the two trigonometric shear deformation theories namely SSDBT and Tan-SDBT. The structure's mechanical properties are varied through its thicknesses following the given functions. The curved microbeam is exposed to electro-mechanical preload and also is rested on a Pasternak type of elastic foundation. Hamilton's principle is used to extract the motion equations and the MCST is used to capture the size effect. Navier's solution method is selected as an analytical method to solve the motion equations for a simply supported ends case and by validating the results for a simpler state with previously published works, effects of different important parameters on the behavior of the structure are considered. It is found that although increasing the porosity reduces the natural frequency, but enhancing the volume fraction of CNTs increasing it. Also, by increasing the central angle of the curved beam the vibrations of the structure increases. Designing and manufacturing more efficient smart structures such as sensors and actuators are of the aims of this study.

  • The under-evaluation structure includes a functionally graded porous (FGP) core which is confined by two piezoelectric carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) layers. The whole structure rests on the Pasternak foundation. Using quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory, governing equations of a sandwich plate are driven. Moreover, face sheets are subjected to the electric field and the whole model is under thermal loading. The properties of all layers alter continuously along with thickness direction due to the CNTs and pores distributions. By conducting the current study, the results emerged in detail to assess the effects of different parameters on buckling of structure. As instance, it is revealed that highest and lowest critical buckling load and consequently stiffness, is due to the V-A and A-V CNTs dispersion type, respectively. Furthermore, it is revealed that by porosity coefficient enhancement, critical buckling load and consequently, stiffness reduces dramatically. Current paper results can be used in various high-tech industries as aerospace factories.

  • This article summarises the traditional method of soil-structure interaction based on the modulus of subgrade reaction and shows its weakness. In order to avoid these weakness, a new soil-structure interaction model is proposed. This model considers the soil as a set of connected springs which enables interaction between springs. Its use is as simple as the traditional model but allows to define the soil properties independently from the structural properties and the loading conditions. Thus, the definition of the modulus of subgrade reaction is unnecessary as each component is defined by its own modulii (Young's modulus and shear modulus). The non-linear soil behaviour for the shear stress versus distortion is also incorporated in the model. This feature allows to pinpoint the arching effect in the ground and shows how the stresses concentrate on stiff materials. Based on these principles, three dimensional program has been developed in order to solve the difficult problem of soil improvement by inclusions (stiff or soft). Also the possibility to take into account a flexible mat and/or a subgrade layer has been implemented. Equations used in the model are developed and a parametric study of the necessary data used in the program is presented. In particular, the Westergaard modulus notion and the arching effect are analysed.

  • The coupled soil-pile-structure seismic response is recently in the spotlight of researchers because of its extensive applications in the different fields of engineering such as bridges, offshore platforms, wind turbines, and buildings. In this paper, a simple analytical model is developed to evaluate the dynamic performance of seismically isolated bridges considering triple interactions of soil, piles, and bridges simultaneously. Novel expressions are proposed to present the dynamic behavior of pile groups in inhomogeneous soils with various shear modulus along with depth. Both cohesive and cohesionless soil deposits can be simulated by this analytical model with a generalized function of varied shear modulus along the soil depth belonging to an inhomogeneous stratum. The methodology is discussed in detail and validated by rigorous dynamic solution of 3D continuum modeling, and time history analysis of centrifuge tests. The proposed analytical model accuracy is guaranteed by the acceptable agreement between the experimental/numerical and analytical results. A comparison of the proposed linear model results with nonlinear centrifuge tests showed that during moderate (frequent) earthquakes the relative differences in responses of the superstructure and the pile cap can be ignored. However, during strong excitations, the response calculated in the linear time history analysis is always lower than the real conditions with the nonlinear behavior of the soil-pile-bridge system. The current simple and efficient method provides the accuracy and the least computational costs in comparison to the full three-dimensional analyses.

  • The upper wall-lower frame structures(mixed building structures) are usually composed of shear wall structure in the upper part of structure which is used as residential space and frame structure in the lower part of structure which is used as commercial space centering around the transfer system in the lower part of structure. These structures are characteristics of stiffness irregularity, mass irregularity, and vertical geometric irregularity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the nonlinear response characteristics and the seismic capacity of mixed building structures when the number of stories in the lower frame is varied. The conclusions of this study are following. 1) As the result of push-over analysis of structure such as roof drift(i.e. roof displacement/structural height) and base shear coefficient, when the stories of lower frame system are increased, base shear coefficient is decreased, but roof drift is increased. 2) According to an increase in stories of the lower fame, story drift and ductility ratio of upper wall system are decreased and behavior of upper wall system is closed to elastic. 3) When the stories of lower frame system are increased, the excessive story drift is concentrated on the lower frame system.

  • Resizing techniques have been recognized as practical methods for drift design of high-rise building since sensitivity analysis and iterative structural analysis are not required in implementation. In the techniques, the amount of material of a memberin a building for resizing is determined in terms of cross-sectional areas and sectional inertia moments as design variables. In this study, five drift design methods are developed by considering design variable linking strategy and fomulating resizing algorithm in terms of material properties of shear walls as a design variable. The developed methods are applied to the drift design of 20-story frame-RC shear wall structure, and then evaluated in the view points of practicality and efficiency.

  • Reinforced concrete shear wall is one of the most common structural forms for high-rise buildings, and seismic energy dissipation techniques, which are effective means to control structural vibration response, are being increasingly used in engineering. Reinforced concrete-mild steel damper stiffness-tandem energy dissipation coupling beams are a new technology being gradually adopted by more construction projects since being proposed. Research on this technology is somewhat deficient, and this paper investigates design principles and methods for two types of mild steel dampers commonly used for energy dissipation coupling beams. Based on the conception design of R.C. shear wall structure and mechanics principle, the basic design theories and analytic expressions for the related optimization parameters of dampers at elastic stage, yield stage, and limit state are derived. The outcomes provide technical support and reference for application and promotion of reinforced concrete-mild steel damper stiffness-tandem energy dissipation coupling beam in engineering practice.

  • This paper presents the results of a detailed experimental examination of fully developed asymmetric flows between annular tubes with square-ribbed surface roughness. The main emphasis of the research has been on establishing the turbulence structure, particularly in the central region of the channel where the two dissimilar wall flows interact. Measurements have included profiles of time mean velocities, turbulence intensities, turbulent shear stresses, triple velocity correlations, skewness, and flatness. The region of greatest interaction is characterized by strong diffusional transport of turbulent shear stress and kinetic energy from rough toward the smooth wall region, giving rise to an appreciable separation between the planes of zero shear stresses depending on positions of roughness on the walls.

  • The effect of vinegar concentration (+30%, 0% and -30%) on the emulsion stability of mayonnaise dressing was studied by the measurement of theological test and sensory evaluation. The emulsion stability of mayonnaise dressing increased with increase in vinegar concentration. The results of steady shear theological test indicated that C sample of the highest vinegar concentration (+30%) exhibited higher emulsion stability than other samples. The dynamic shear datas were similar to steady shear theological data. The mayonnaise dressing samples showed time dependence, which was quantitatively described by the Weltman model. Parameters A and B indicated that the structure of C sample exhibited more stable than that of A (-30%) and B (0%) samples. The amount of oil separation was less than that of A and B samples. The results of sensory evaluation were similar to those of theological and emulsion tests.

  • The calculation method which takes into account the shear lag effects on the ultimate transverse bending moment of a SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) ship has been developed. In case of the ultimate bending strength analysis of conventional monohull ships and general box girder structures, the hypothesis that plane section remains plane after bending can be employed but not in the case of the structures having wide flange. For the ultimate bending strength analysis of such structures, a new method which can take into account the effect of shear lag on the ultimate bending strength has been developed by adopting more reasonable assumption that warping distortion of the section takes place inthe same way as the actual stress distribution. Finally, the proposed method has been applied to a a SWATH cross deck structure.
