Soil nailing is used as a method of slope stabilization and excavation support. The design method of soil nail are based on experience or assumption of interaction between soil and reinforcement. Most design methods simply considers the tension of reinforcement for analysis of slope stabilization. Soil nails interact with soils under combined loading of shear and tension. Jewell & Pedley(1990) suggested a design equation of shear force with bending stiffness and discussed that the magnitude of the maximum shear force is small in comparison with the maximum axal force. However, they have used a very conservative limiting bearing stress on nails. This paper discusses that the shear strength of soil nails should not be disregarded with proper bearing stresses on nails. The modified FHWA design method was proposed by considering shear forces on nails with bending stiffness.

Steel fibers are recently well recognized for good composite/strengthening materials because of their ductile behavior and good performance on crack control and shear behavior compared to concrete materials. Especially, the great improvement in shear strength by steel fibers led researchers to be involved in many experimental studies. However, our understanding on the complex shear behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) members are still very limited, and the fundamental test data are also not enough. In this study, therefore, 4 SFRC specimens were fabricated and tested, from which the effectiveness of steel fibers as shear reinforcement were evaluated. The test results shows that the shear strength of SFRC members increases as the amount of steel fibers increases.
This study presents the experimental results of twenty three reinforced concrete beams with rectangular web openings externally strengthened with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites bonded around openings. All tested beams had the same geometry and reinforcement details. At openings locations, the stirrups intercepted the openings were cut during fabrication of reinforcement cage to simulate the condition of inclusion of an opening in an existing beam. Several design parameters are considered including the opening dimensions and location in the shear zone, the wrapping configurations, and the amount and the type of the FRP composites in the vicinity of the openings. The wrapping configurations of FRP included: sheets, strips, U-shape strips, and U-shape strips with bundles of FRP strands placed at the top and sides of the beam forming a fan under the strips to achieve closed wrapping. The effect of these parameters on the failure modes, the ultimate load, and the beam stiffness were investigated. The shear contribution of FRP on the shear capacity of tested beams with web openings was estimated according to ACI Committee 440-08, Canadian Standards S6-06, and Khalifa et al. model and examined against the test results. A modification factor to account for the dimensions of opening chords was applied to the predicted gain in the shear capacity according to ACI 440-08 and CSA S6-06 for bonded Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) around openings. The analytical results after incorporating the modification factor into the codes guidelines showed good agreement with the test results.

This study examines shear capacity performance and structural characteristics of reinforced concrete beam using carbon fiber sheet(CFS), g)ass fiber sheet(GFS), glass fiber steel plate(GSP) and carbon fiber bar CB) which are reinforcing materials for reinforced concrete beam in order to produce similar condition to repair and reinforce actual structure and aims to provide data available In designing and constructing reinforced concrete structures under the structural damage. This study obtains the following conclusions. After considering the shear experiment results. it was indicated that the CB reinforced test object was the best in the shear capacity improvement and ductility capacity as it was contained in the concrete and was all operated, Also, GFS reinforced test object indicated the reduced flexural capacity but good shear capacity. GSP reinforced test object had bigger reinforcing strength than other reinforcing test objects. On the other hand, it showed the lowest reinforcement effect as compared section thickness of reinforced material because it showed the bigger relativity a section thickness of reinforced material. If the adherence to the concrete is improved, it will seem to show bigger reinforcement effect.

Although the flat plate system is an efficient structural type due to the simplicity of its construction, the low story height, and the various plan design, the slab-column connections are vulnerable to punching shear failure from gravity load and eccentric shear failure from lateral load. To prevent the structure collapse, various construction methods of slab-column connection reinforcement are developed but none of these satisfies all of structural performance, economics, and constructability. This paper presents the reinforcement of slab-column connection with lattice bars. The structural performance is confirmed with the interior slab-column connection tests subjected to cyclic loading, and the economic feasibility is demonstrated from the structural design under the same condition with lattice bars, stud rails, and stirrups.

Two-way slabs reinforced with high-performance steels, which have several practical advantages of a reduction of congestion in heavily reinforced members, savings in the cost of labor and repair, the higher corrosion resistance, and a reduction of construction time, were constructed and tested. The influences of the flexural reinforcement ratio, concentrating the reinforcement in the immediate column region, and using steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the slab on the punching shear resistance and post-cracking stiffness were investigated, and compared with the punching shear test results of the slabs reinforced with conventional steels and GFRP bars. In addition, the strain distribution of flexural reinforcements and crack control were investigated, and the effective width calculating method for the average flexural reinforcement ratio was estimated. The use of high-performance steel reinforcement increased the punching shear strength of slabs, and decreased the amount of flexural reinforcements. The concentrating the top mat of flexural reinforcement increased the post-cracking stiffness, and showed better strain distribution and crack control. In addition, the use of SFRC showed beneficial effects on the punching shear strength and crack control. It was suggest that the effective width should be changed to larger than 2 times the slab thickness from the column faces.
High-strength concrete (HSC) is becoming increasingly attractive for various construction projects since it offers a multitude of benefits over normal-strength concrete (NSC). Unfortunately, current design provisions for shear capacity of RC slender beams are generally based on data developed for NSC members having a compressive strength of up to 50 MPa, with limited recommendations on the use of HSC. The failure of HSC beams is noticeably different than that of NSC beams since the transition zone between the cement paste and aggregates is much denser in HSC. Thus, unlike NSC beams in which micro-cracks propagate around aggregates, providing significant aggregate interlock, micro-cracks in HSC are trans-granular, resulting in relatively smoother fracture surfaces, thereby inhibiting aggregate interlock as a shear transfer mechanism and reducing the influence of compressive strength on the ultimate shear strength of HSC beams. In this study, a new approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) was used to predict the shear capacity of both NSC and HSC slender beams without shear reinforcement. Shear capacity predictions of the GA model were compared to calculations of four other commonly used methods: the ACI method, CSA method, Eurocode-2, and Zsutty's equation. A parametric study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the GA model to capture the effect of basic shear design parameters on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under shear loading. The parameters investigated include compressivestrength, amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and beam's depth. It was found that the GA model provided more accurate evaluation of shear capacity compared to that of the other common methods and better captured the influence of the significant shear design parameters. Therefore, the GA model offers an attractive user-friendly alternative to conventional shear design methods.

The basis of capacity design has been explicitly or implicitly regulated in most bridge design specifications. It is to guarantee ductile failure of entire bridge system by preventing brittle failure of pier members and any other structural members until the columns provides fully enough plastic rotation capacity. Brittle shear is regarded as a mode of failure that should be avoided in reinforced concrete bridge pier design. To provide ductility behavior of column, the one of important factors is that flexural hinge of column must be detailed to ensure adequate and dependable shear strength and deformation capacity. Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with 4.5 aspect ratio. The test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, and axial load ratio. Eight flexurally dominated columns were tested. In all specimens, initial flexural-shear cracks occurred at 1.5% drift ratio. The multiple flexural-shear crack width and length gradually increased until the final stage. The angles of the major inclined cracks measured from the vertical column axis ranged between 42 and 48 degrees. In particular, this study focused on assessing transverse reinforcement contribution to the column shear strength. Transverse reinforcement contribution measured during test. Each three components of transverse reinforcement contribution, axial force contribution and concrete contribution were investigated and compared. It was assessed that the concrete stresses of all specimen were larger than stress limit of Korea Bridge Design Specifications.
