In this study, the analytic solutions and numerical methods were used to estimate the shape and size effects on the stability of underground openings. The stability of underground openings was evaluated by scrutinizing the effects of the rock mass quality, the state of in-situ stresses and the lateral earth pressure coefficient on the displacement, the stress concentration and the plastic region developed in the vicinity of the openings. The analytic solutions have shown that the stress concentration factor is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of openings. Through parametric study on the various shapes and sizes of underground openings the characteristics of the controlling factors concerned with the stability were analyzed. Then, the study was extended to the horseshoe-shaped openings commonly used for under ground storage. Through the extended study the effects of the stress ratio and the height-towidth ratio of openings on the maximum displacement and plastic region developed around the openings were estimated. The results have shorn that the height-to-width ratio of domestic storage caverns can be increased economically without stability problem, as far as the lateral earth pressure coefficient is appropriate.
Though development of reinforced earth wall is on the rise recently, safety verification for various methods remains behind which has caused the problems including collapse after installation. This study aims to evaluate the field applicability of the shape of flexible strip reinforcement according to pullout resistance test and field damage test. The test specimens were 3 shape of reinforcement, the typical flexible band reinforcement, developed luged band reinforcement, and band type reinforcement made by cutting geogrid. It was found that reinforcement of type have strengths and weaknesses, respectively. The best type of flexible strip reinforcements can be selected, if the conditions are considered with the installation conditions of the reinforcing earth retaining wall and the particle size of the backfill materials.

Segmentation and organization of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data of the Earth's surface are difficult tasks because the captured LiDAR data are composed of irregularly distributed point clouds with lack of semantic information. The reason for this difficulty in processing LiDAR data is that the data provide huge amount of the spatial coordinates without topological and/or relational information among the points. This study introduces LiDAR data segmentation technique by utilizing histograms of the LiDAR height image data and analyzing roof shape for 3D reconstruction and visualization of the buildings. One of the advantages in utilizing LiDAR height image data is no registration required because the LiDAR data are geo-referenced and ortho-projected data. In consequence, measurements on the image provide absolute reference coordinates. The LiDAR image allows measurement of the initial building boundaries to estimate locations of the side walls and to form the planar surfaces which represent approximate building footprints. LiDAR points close to each side wall were grouped together then the least-square planar surface fitting with the segmented point clouds was performed to determine precise location of each wall of an building. Finally, roof shape analysis was performed by accumulated slopes along the profiles of the roof top. However, simulated LiDAR data were used for analyzing roof shape because buildings with various shapes of the roof do not exist in the test area. The proposed approach has been tested on the heavily built-up urban residential area. 3D digital vector map produced by digitizing complied aerial photographs was used to evaluate accuracy of the results. Experimental results show efficiency of the proposed methodology for 3D building reconstruction and large scale digital mapping especially for the urban area.
This research was carried in order to improve design technique for the vertical shaft of which design guide has not been proposed clearly. The deformation tendency of vertical shaft and distribution of the earth pressure around shaft were reviewed with both of theoretical earth pressure distribution suggested in design criteria and measured data which had been gained from 2 constructing shaft. The distribution of earth pressure applied on the vertical shaft was similar with the result of previous theory for the earth pressure proposed by Shin (2007). Moreover it was observed that asymmetric deformation and earth pressure around vertical shaft were caused by inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the ground. The asymmetric earth pressure ratio ($R_p$) in soil and weathered rock were divergent according to the shape ratio. In addition, it is more reasonable that the value of asymmetric earth pressure ratio ($R_p$) is considered less than 0.35 in the case of constructing shaft under rock.

Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) theory is widely used for evaluating seismic earth pressure of retaining wall. It was originally developed for gravity walls, which have rigid behavior, retaining cohesionless backfill materials. However, it is used for cantilever retaining wall on the various foundation conditions. Considering only inertial force of the soil wedge as a dynamic force in the M-O method, inertial force of the wall does not take into account the effect on the dynamic earth pressure. This paper presents the theoretical background for the calculation of the dynamic earth pressure of retaining wall during earthquakes, and the current research trends are organized. Besides, the discrepancies between real seismic behavior and M-O method for inverted T-shape retaining wall with 5.4m height subjected to earthquake motions were evaluated using dynamic centrifuge test. From previous studies, it was found that application point, distribution of dynamic earth pressure and M-O method are needed to be re-examined. Test results show that real behavior of retaining wall during an earthquake has a different phase between dynamic earth pressure and inertial force of retaining wall. Moreover, when bending moments of retaining wall reach maximum values, the measured earth pressures are lower than static earth pressures and it is considered due to inertial effects of retaining wall.

Although the interest for earth architecture has been expanded and settled as a part of modern architecture, precisely calculating the ratio of water content in practice is still difficult and the calculation is based on empirical analysis yet. This causes many problems in durability and maintenance of earthen architecture. Therefore, this study investigated to find the easiest way to correctly calculate the appropriate level of water content ratio (AWCR), which can be used in practice. Until now, the workers have checked the AWCR based on their own experience with popular but vague manuals. On this awareness, we studied the several testing methods and found the dropping test which uses the pattern of shape after the sample is dropped. In this point, we studied and developed the definite testing method in terms of process, and shape discrimination. Also we suggest the test recording sheet by using the cobalt chloride($CoCl_2$) whose color is instantly changed when contacts with the moisture. It is believed that this result can help improving the quality and durability of the earthen architecture using the rammed earth method and the efficiency in practice.

Theoretical equations are derived to estimate the larteral earth pressures acting on piles with various shape of pile section due to lateral soil movements. And also examination of characteristics of the equations and comparison with other equations are carried out. The equations can be derived by calculating the difference between the two earth pressures acting on front and back sides of pile's row under plastic state satisfying Mohr-Coulomb's yield criterion, which is developed on tile soil between two piles among the piles in a row. The theoretical equations can reasonably consider the pile section-shape, the pile interval and the plastic condition in the soils just around piles. Additionally, the factors about soils and piles influencing on the lateral earth pressures are clarified and the high reliability of the equations is proved.
In this study, behavior of a rigid continuous wall, earth pressure distribution with construction stage, and axial force of earth anchors were evaluated based on field monitoring data and numerical analysis results. For this purpose, a construction site excavated using the diaphragm wall was selected and full instrumentation system was introduced. From monitoring results, it was found that the values of horizontal displacement of the wall measured from the inclinometers, which were installed within the diaphragm wall were similar to analytical value. The earth pressure increased with excavation progress due to jacking force of the ground anchors installed in previous excavation stages. When the excavation depth reached 60% of the final depth, observed earth pressure distribution was similar to that estimated from Peck's apparent earth pressure distribution. When the excavation depth was around 90% of the final depth, values of observed earth pressure showed middle values between those of Peck's and Tschebotarioffs apparent earth pressures. It was also observed that, when excavation depth is deep, values of the earth pressures from the rigid wall were similar to those estimated from conventional earth pressure distribution shape proposed for flexible walls.
On plane strain condition, many researchers have investigated the earth pressure according to the shape of wall, and standardized method has been applied to the design of the retaining wall. But on cylindrical diaphragm wall, at-rest earth pressure has been generally used. Even though this method is on conservative side, it may lead to over-design. In this paper, the application of convergence confinement method to the calculation of the earth pressure acting on the cylindrical diaphragm wall of a shaft was suggested. In addition, a model test was carried out to investigate the distributions of earth pressure. Model test results show that the earth pressures of diaphragm wall are about 1.4 times larger than active earth pressure and about 0.8 times less than at-rest earth pressure.
It is well known that earth pressure on the cylindrical open caisson and cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft is less than that at-rest and in plane strain condition because of the horizontal and vertical arching effects due to wall displacement and stress relief. In order to examine the earth pressure distribution of a cylindrical wall, model tests were performed in dry sand for the care of constant wall displacement with depth. Model test apparatus which can control wall displacement, wall friction, and wall shape ratio was developed. The effects of various factors that influence earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft were investigated.
