  • This paper demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) actuators in controlling the motion of micro active catherer. The dynamic behavior of SMA is obtained by several experiments for the design of the controller. Two different type of structures which realize catheter are proposed. Each prototype of micro active catherer is fabricated, and its control performance which used the designed controller is investigated. The results obtained show the potential of the SMA as viable means for actuating the micro active catheter.

  • This research was conducted to study the behavior of exterior concrete beam-column joints with reinforced shape memory alloy (SMA) bars tested under cyclic loading. These bars benefit from superelastic behavior and can stand high loads without residual strains. The experimental part of the study, 8 specimens of exterior concrete beam-column joints were made and tested. Two different types of concrete with 30 and 45 MPa were used. Four specimens contained SMA bars and 4 specimens contained steel bars in beam-column joints. Furthermore, different transverse reinforcements were used in beams investigate the effects of concrete confinement. Specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Results show that SMA bars are capable of recentering to their original shape after standing large displacements. Due to the superelastic behavior of SMA bars, cracks at the joint core vanish under cyclic loading. As the cyclic loading increased, bending failure occurred in the beam outside the joint core. In the analytical parts of the study, specimens were simulated using the SeismoStruct software. Experimental and analytical results showed a satisfactory correlation. Plastic hinge length at the beam joint for specimens with SMA and steel bars was calculated by empirical equations, experimental and analytical results. It was shown that Paulay's and Priestley's equations are appropriate for concrete beam-column joints in both types of bars.

  • During recent earthquakes, a significant number of concrete structures suffered extensive damage. Conventional reinforced concrete structures are designed for life-time safety that may see permanent inelastic deformation after severe earthquakes. Hence, there is a need to utilize adequate materials that have the ability to tolerate large deformation and get back to their original shape. Super-elastic shape memory alloy (SMA) is a smart material with unique properties, such as the ability to regain undeformed shape by unloading or heating. In this research, four different stories (three, five, seven and nine) of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings have been studied and subjected to near-field ground motions. For each building, two different types of reinforcement detailing are considered, including (1) conventional steel reinforcement (RC frame) and (2) steel-SMA reinforcement (SMA RC frame), with SMA bars being used at plastic zones of beams and steel bars in other regions. Nonlinear time history analyses have been performed by "SeismoStruct" finite element software. The results indicate that the application of SMA materials in plastic hinge regions of the beams lead to reduction of the residual displacement and consequently post-earthquake repairs. In general, it can be said that shape memory alloy materials reduce structural damage and retrofit costs.

  • TiNi alloy fiber was used to recover the original shape of materials using its shape memory effect. The shape memory alloy plays an important role within the metal matrix composite. The shape memory alloy can control the crack propagation in metal matrix composite, and improve the tensile strength of the composite. In this study, TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy(SMA) composite was fabricated by hot press method, and pressed by a roller for its strength improvement. The four kinds of specimens were fabricated with $0\%,\;3.2\%,\;5.2\%\;and\;7\%$ and volume fraction of TiNi alloy fiber, respectively. A fatigue test has performed to evaluate the crack initiation and propagation for the TiNi/A16061 SMA composite fabricated by かis method. In order to study the shape memory effect of the TiNi alloy fiber, the test has also done under both conditions of the room temperature and high temperature. The relationship between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor was clarified for the composite, and the cold rolling effect was also studied.

  • This paper describes a new mechanism for improving the force of actuators based on shape memory alloys (SMA) by increasing the number at which a coil pattern SMA spring can evenly be heated. This structure accomplishes a high efficient transformation between force and displacement overcoming the main mechanical drawback of shape memory alloys, that being the limit strain. A pantograph manipulator actuated by the introduced new mechanism has been designed for this research. Mechanical structure and driving mechanism of this manipulator are described in detail, and its control algorithm and current amplifier circuit in a position control system are designed.

  • In the recent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. The dynamic characteristic analysis of SMA is necessary for actuator application and many common researches report the material characteristics of SMA sufficiently. However, the research on dynamic characteristics is very deficient. In this paper, the helical spring are fabricated with NiTi SMA wire of high resistivity. The force, response speed, temperature, and displacement are measured by digital force gauge, infrared thermometer, and laser displacement sensor so that the dynamic characteristics of this SMT is analyzed. Also, bidirectional actuator was fabricated and experimented for its performance

  • A structure using the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) returns to its initial shape by increasing or decreasing temperature under initial residual stress. Through the thermo-mechanical constitutive equation of shape memory alloy(SMA) proposed by Lagoudas et al., we simulate the behavior of a double actuator in which two SMA wires are attached to the tip of panel under the initially given residual stress. Through the numerical results conducted in the present study, the proposed actuator device is suitable for repeated actuation. The simulation algorithm proposed in the present study can be applied extensively to the analysis of the assembled .system of SMA-actuator and host structure in the practical applications.

  • In this work, we propose a new type of HDD Load/unload (L/UL) suspension featuring shape memory alloy (SMA). The mechanical and thermal properties of the SMA film with respect to the material phase states are experimentally estimated and the SMA film is carefully integrated to the suspension. In order to obtain the desirable dynamic characteristics of the suspension during L/UL process, the design parameters of the SMA film such as geometric properties are determined by considering the vibration modes of the suspension related to the L/UL performance. After analyzing the modal characteristics of the proposed suspension, L/UL performance is evaluated through L/UL simulation by observing the vibration motion and minimum flying height of the slider during L/UL process.

  • In this paper, a rotating tool clamping device was developed based on a shape memory alloy(SMA) and its feasibility as a tool holder was experimentally explored. The SMA-based device was able to alter clamping to unclamping through temperature control within 1 second. The means and repeatability(${\sigma}$) of the tool clamping force were 185.5N and 6N respectively and its drifts were less than 3% for an hour. Considering the temperature hysteresis of the SMA-based tool clamping device, it is necessary to heat the SMA ring to around $50^{\circ}C$ after tool change to obtain more clamping force.
