  • In order to improve the safety r! ship berthing and the efficiency r! berth operation in the harbour, the berthing energy acting on a ship in berthing maneuver need to be estimated properly. The berthing energy is used as one q the criteria to determine the maximum permissible load of fender as well as important factors to establish the berthing speed and the required power r! tug-beat for pilot and ship operator. In this study, some problems r! present the method of berthing energy are discussed on the basis of the hydrodynamic aspects. Then, series calculations of berthing energy are carried out considering the effect of water depth on added mass and the ship shape for container series from 1,600TEU to 12,000TEU.

  • Three types of land use were investigated to describe the effect of land use on both surface and ground water quality. Typical land uses of a grazing pasture, Sudan grass field and paddy in Kangwon province were selected and flumes and monitoring wells were installed. Land managements were carefully monitored, water samples were collected periodically and analyzed with respect to nitrate, TP and TKN at a laboratory of Kangwon Provincial Institute of Health and Environment from August, 1993 to May, 1994. Runoff from the pasture was formed mostly with seeping subsurface flow in the lower areas of the pasture. A few overland flows were observed during heavy storms, and when it occurred, runoff increased sharply. For the Sudan grass field, runoff was formed with overland flow. Nitrate concentration in runoff from both land uses seemed not affected by runoff and ranged from 0.241 to 4.137mg'/1. TP and TKN concentrations from the pasture were affected by overland flow. When overland flow occurred, TP and TKN concentrations abruptly increased to 5.726 and 12.841mg/1, respectively, from less than 1.0mg/l. However, these concentrations from the Sudan grass field were quite stable ranging from 0.191 to 0.674mg/l for TP and 0A70 and 1.650mg/l for TKN. Nitrate concentration was significantly affected by land use(Sudan grass field) and the concentration increase reached about 2mg/l per lOOm ground water flow. Nitrate concentration from a well located in the middle of rice fields also was significantly higher than that measured from a well located relatively undisturbed mountain toe area. TP and TKN concentrations in shallow ground water affected by the depth of the monitoring wells. The deeper the monitoring wells, the less TP and TKN concentrations were measured.

  • We built multi-purpose large triaxial testing system that can test and evaluate various geotechnical design parameters such as shear strength, deformation modulus and stress-strain behaviour for large diameter granular materials, which are the most commonly used construction materials in the railway, road embankments. The details of the built testing system and the results obtained from static triaxial test carried out for gneiss ballast material are discussed within the scope of this paper. Ballast is hardly saturated and is confined at low overburden pressure, since the depth is shallow and the permeability is very high. Herein we ascertained that the confining pressure can effectively be controlled by vacuum. The rational trend could be checked up through triaxial test results such as shear strength, deformation, and particle breakage. And the shear strength envelope could be non-linearly represented with the parent rock strength, confining pressure of the triaxial test and proper parameters.

  • Two-dimensional (2-D) inversion of magnetotelluric (MT) data for two survey lines having south-north direction from Jeiu Island has been carried out. The 2-D models show a thick layer having around 10 ohm-m in the depth of a few hundred meters throughout the survey area, which can be considered as the unconsolidated sedimentary layer. And they also show a conductive anomaly at the central part of each survey lines. But unfortunately by now, we do not have any further information about the anomaly. Comparison of the 2-D inversion model using MT band only and that using both AMT and MT bands said that it is helpful for us to include AMT band as well as MT band in the inversion to interpret not only the shallow part but also the deep structures.

  • Singapore government is strongly promoting the development and utilization of underground space in national level due to the nature of the city state which lacks the land. As well as conventional underground utilization in shallow depth such as metro and underground roads, large rock cavern utilization has been started after the successful completion of the underground ammunition depot in the rock, and Jurong Rock Cavern, the second large underground cavern project has just been completed. In this paper, after evaluating the conditions of the underground development in rock mass through the analysis of the geology of Singapore, the history and current status of underground development are examined. Several creative development plans from Singapore government such as underground reservoirs, underground automation logistics systems and underground warehouses storage etc. are introduced with technical issues. This paper also discusses the problems and issues related to the development of large underground space in rock mass in Singapore. It is expected that such active development of underground space in Singapore can give many opportunities and also challenges for rock engineering and industry in the future.

  • To examine the characteristics of the nutrient release from the sediments in two reservoirs, Lake Paldang and Lake Cheungpyeung, we analyzed physical and chemical properties of the sediments and calculated the nutrient release rates from the sediments. The particle properties of sediments in Lake Paldang changed from silt to sand after summer rainy season, especially in the water area of the Kyeungan River where the water depth was shallow and the width of river was narrow. The sediments in Lake Cheungpyeung had higher contents of silt and clay than in Lake Paldang, and the particle size was not much different before and after rainfall. The release rates of nutrients in two lakes varied with the kind of nutrients and the season. The release rates of DTN and ${NH_4}^+-N$ in Lake Paldang were faster in spring than autumn. But the Lake Cheungpyeung showed similar values of release rates before and after summer rainy season. ${NO_3}^--N$ and phosphorous were not released from sediments or were absorbed into sediments all the time in two lakes. Compared with other lakes, the sediments of two lakes consisted of bigger particles and had a lower organic matters content than other lake-type reservoirs. Due to the short hydraulic retention time and no stratification throughout the year in Lake Paldang and Lake Cheungpyeung, the release rates of nutrients from sediment in these reservoirs were lower than other lakes and this seems to be a typical characteristic of river-type reservoirs.

  • To improve water quality for agricultural use, it is needed to introduce the natural and low-cost self-purification system. It is also necessary to develop the water purification facilities for more efficient and convenient design, construction, operation and management. This study aims to develop the practical facilities to improve water quality for agricultural use. The practical detention pond system, which uses artificial floating island and shield skirts with bio-media, enhanced removal efficiencies of SS, TN and TP more particularly than the detention pond using an auxiliary dam. The removal efficiencies SS, TN and TP for the practical detention pond were 55.7%, 61.0% and 55.9%, respectively. The facilities of the practical detention pond has a lot of disadvantages such as the low-cost and high efficiency as well as uncountable impacts regarding ecology and landscape. However, an auxiliary dam is recommended to be installed in shallow depth due to low efficiency.

  • The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound velocity structure, sea surface and bottom roughness, and bottom sediment distribution. In particular the sound velocity structure in shallow water varies with time and space, an? the sediment distributes very variedly with place. In order to investigate the seasonal variation of low-frequency sound propagation in the Yellow Sea, the propagation experiments were conducted along the same track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea at various seasons of spring. summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider the measurement results on the propagation loss with the sound velocity structure, and investigate the seasonal variation of the propagation loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn. And the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The seasonal change of the propagation loss increased with the rise of sound frequency and the propagation range.

  • In the companion paper (II, Development of Site Classification System), new size classification system based on site periods $(T_G)$ was recommended for legions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea. Despite the site classification method was improved, the response spectrum would be required to be modified by adjusting the integration interval to calculate the site coefficients because the response spectra did not match well the average spectral accelerations obtained by site response analyses in the range of long periods. In this paper, new response spectra for each site categories were determined by adjusting the integration interval of long period site coefficient $F_v\;from\;0.4{\sim}2.0\;to\;0.4{\sim}1.5$ second. It matched well the average spectral accelerations and new response spectrum, and it was also improved compared to the current she classification system.

  • Purpose: The concept of gingival biotype has been used as a predictor of periodontal therapy outcomes since the 1980s. In the present study, prospective and controlled experiments were performed to compare periodontal pocket depth (PPD) reduction and gingival shrinkage (GSH) after scaling and root planing (SRP) according to gingival biotype. Methods: Twenty-five patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis participated in the present study. The PPD and GSH of the labial side of the maxillary anterior teeth (from the right canine to the left canine) were evaluated at baseline and 3 months after SRP. Changes in the PPD following SRP were classified into 4 groups according to the gingival thickness and initial PPD. Two more groups representing normal gingival crevices were added in evaluation of the GSH. The results were statistically analyzed using the independent t-test. Results: In the end, 16 patients participated in the present study. With regard to PPD reduction, there were no significant differences according to gingival biotype (P>0.05). Likewise, sites with a PPD of over 3 mm failed to show any significant differences in the GSH (P>0.05). However, among the sites with a PPD of under 3 mm, those with the thin gingival biotype showed more GSH (P<0.05). Conclusions: PPD changes after SRP were not affected by gingival biotype with either shallow or deep periodontal pockets. GSH also showed equal outcomes in all the groups without normal gingival crevices. The results of SRP seem not to differ according to gingival biotype.
