성역할정체감에 따른 외모관리행동 및 신체노출태도에 관한 연구 (A Study of Appearance Management Behaviors and Body Exposure Attitudes according to Sex Role Identity)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of appearance management behavior and body exposure attitude according to sex role identity. The method of this study was a survey research method by questionnaire. The subjects were 632 college students (male: 302, female: 330) living in Seoul area. The data were analyzed by SPSS program. Analysis methods used were frequency, factor analysis, Cronbach's $\alpha$-reliability coefficient, one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. The subjects were divided into 4 types of sex role identity: androgynous, masculine, feminine, and undifferentiated type. The female androgynous group had skin care the most, while the male androgynous type had clothing management and weight control the most among the 4 types. Both male and female androgynous groups had hairstyle care the most. Both the male and female masculine groups wore chest exposing clothes the most, while the female masculine type wore shoulder exposing and leg exposing clothes the most. The female androgynous group showed the highest appearance management expenses.

여대생들의 신체상과 다이어트가 섭식장애, 식이섭취량 및 사회심리적 요인에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Body Image and Restrained Eating on Eating Disorder, Dietary Intakes, Self Esteem and Sex Role Identity in College Women)

  • Thinness has become a symbol for beauty, acceptance and competence for women in our society, and pressure to diet because of this unrealistic standard is one factor reponsible for the increasing incidence of eating disorder. Three hundred fifty college women in the Chonbuk area were surveyed from May to June 1998, to investigate the relationship among body image, eating disorder, dietary intakes, self esteem and sex role identity. This study identified a subgroup of women who were relatively satisfied with their body weight and who did not diet. This group was compared with subgroups of women who were dissatisfied with their bodies and either were or were not restrained eaters. The dissatisfied/dieting women had the highest BMI, binge eating disorder and night eating syndrom, had significantly lower calorie, protein, iron, vitamin B$_1$, and vitamin B$_2$ intake compared with the satisfied/non-dieting women. The dissatisfied /dieting women, who had lower self-esteem compared with the satisfied/non-dieting women, but the frequency of sex role identity was similga among the groups of women. BMI and binge eating disorder were positively correlated(r=0.157, p<.01), but BMI and self esteem were negatively correlated(r=-0.202, p<0.01). Especially, binge eating disorder and self esteem were negatively correlated (r=-0.126, p<0.05).

X\cdot$미 양국 대학생의 성역할 정체감과 자존감에 관한 비교문화연구 (Sex role identity and self esteem among Korean and American college students)

  • The present study was designed to answer the following questions : The first overall question had to do with the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem-more specifically, is androgyny or masculinity more importamt in explaining the variation in self-esteem? The second overall question had to do with the degree to which the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem is a universal or a culturally specific phenomeon-more specifically, is the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem the same in Korean and American cultures? The Bem Sex Role Inventory and the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory were administered to 208 American college students and 207 Korean college students, respectively, in introductory sociology classes. The BSRI and SEI are standardized for American subjects and written in English. Prior to administering these instruments to Korean subjects, they were translated ito the Korean Language. In order to fully explore the data, qualitative as well as quantitative measurement of the BSRI were used, and both factorial and regression analyses were performed in this study. The most important cross-cultural differences found in the present study are directly related to the two research questions. In the U.S. sample, masculine attributes were found to be more important in explaining self-esteem. On the other hand, androgynous attributes were positively related to self-esteem in the Korean sample. These findings also provide the answer to the second question. That is, different cross-cultural patterns of relationship were found between sexrole identity and self-esteem, providing some support for a culture-bound relationship. These cross-cultural differences were discussed in terms of both confucian values held by Koreans and Bakan's suggestion of a positive relationship between agentic characteristics and modernization.

대학생의 성교육 효과측정을 위한 기초 연구 (A preliminary study for the evaluation of the effects of sex education program on college students)

  • This study was performed to provide preliminary data for the development of a useful instrument to measure the effect of sex education. The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 155 college students enrolled in the course "Sexuality and Relationship" at Y university in Seoul. At the end of that course, they were asked to write freely about the change they had experienced on sexuality. All meaningful statements were elicited and classified into 7 categories; "Change of Knowledge", "Enlightenment", "Change of Attitude on Sexuality", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of. Identity", "Change of Emotion", "Change of Behavior:' There were significant changes in the areas of knowledge(28. 6%), enlightenment(27.4%), and attitudes(20.3%) about sexuality among these 7 categories. The Change of Knowledge category consists of 3 areas: "concretion of knowledge", "increase of information", and "correction of misunderstanding." In the category of Enlightenment, total 12 areas are included: "sex role", "erception of lack of knowledge", "importance of family", "life plan", "parent role", "value of life", "equality", "sexual autonomy", "importance of sexuality", "freedom of sexuality", "perception of sexual problem", and "meaning of love." The Attitude Change category consists of 8 areas. These are "being natural", "being progressive", "being sensitive", "being truthful", "being expressive", "being cautious", "being responsible", and "being confident". The category of Buildup of Ability includes 4 areas: "problem solving", "sex education", "relationship", and "communication". The category of Buildup of Identity includes "sexual identity", and "value of sexuality". The Emotional Change category includes 3 areas: "positive feeling", "negative feeling", and "breaking from negative feeling on sexuality". The Behavior Change category includes "sex-related behavioral change". In conclusion, up to now most researches on sex education effect measures only changes of knowledge, attitude, and behavior. But we believe the changes in "Enlightenment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. And the effect of sex education should measure the degree of learning of autonomy, enlightenment, and ability of behavior and so on rather than studying the simple changes in sexuality.enment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. 남편의 자아개념과 성역할 태도에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Relations between Self-Concepts and Sex-role Attitudes of Husbands)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the relations between the self-concepts and the sex-role attitudes of husbands. This paper aims to present the basic data to forming desirable sex-role attitudes between husband and wife. The results obstained in this study are as follows; 1) The scores of the self-concepts of husbands were high in moral ethical self, family self, self identity, self behavior and total positive self score. 2) The sex-role attitudes of husbands were seemed to be a slightly traditional. 3) The higher the score of personal self, family self, self identity, self satisfaction, self behavior and total positive self were, the more modernized the sex-role attitudes of husbands were. 4) The correlation between the self-concepts and the sex-role attitudes showed slightly positive.

양성적 부모의 양육행동과 아동의 자기역량감에 관한 연구 (A Study on Androgynous Parent's Child-rearing Practices and Children's Self-Perceived Competence)

  • This study investigated the relation of androgynous parent's child-rearing practices to children's self-perceived competence by comparison of the effectiveness of androgynous people as parents compared with parents who are other-typed in their sex-role identity. The subjects were 362 third and sixth grade children and their parents selected from two elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, a perception of maternal warmth and control scale, a perception of paternal warmth and control scale, parent's self-esteem scale, and parent's sex-role identity scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, ${\chi}^2$ test, two way-ANOVA, one way-ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data-analysis. The major findings showed that (1) Androgynous and masculine fathers had higher self-esteem than feminine or undifferentiated fathers. Androgynous, masculine, and feminine mothers had higher self-esteem than undifferentiated mothers. (2) There was no difference in children's perception of parental warmth and control as related to parent's sex-role identity. Androgynyous parents were not more likely to be authoritative parents. (3) Sons of androgynous parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of sex-typed parents, while daughters of sex-typed parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of androgynous parents.

여대생이 경험한 여성의 의미 (College Women′s Meaning of Women: Phenomenological Method)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore college women's views of women for forming an upright sex role identity and sex values. Method: The data were collected through in-depth interviews of 10 college women on Jeju Island from February 2002 to March 2002. The interviews were conducted by the writer of this thesis. Each interview lasted for about 45 minutes. The data were analyzed by the Giorgi method. Result: Five main meanings were identified: 1) unfairness 2) majesty 3) mothering 4) womenishness 5) backward in capacity. In other words, women's roles are to look after their family and to take care of household affairs. Women should be beautiful and have womenish traits. Women are less intelligent than men. Women are dependent on men though they suffer from unfairness. This study presents an evidence that the traditional sex-role attitudes still prevail. Conclusion: In order to form an upright sex role identity and sex values, institutional programs in the society and individual efforts are needed.

대학생의 취업대처행동에 영향을 미치는 관련 변인의 탐색 - 사회인구학적 변인과 개인내적 변인을 중심으로 (A Study on Related Variables of University Students' Coping Behavior Concerning Job-searching Problems)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the related variables of university students' coping behavior concerning job-searching problems. The subjects were 436 senior students (212 men and 224 women) enrolled in a university in Gyeongbuk Province. Survey questionnaires were used to measure undergraduate students' coping behavior concerning job-searching problems, work commitment, their will to accept downward employment, sex role identity, grade, sex, perceived SES, and major. Data were analyzed by means, standard deviations, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe' test, and regression. Results are summarized as follows: (1) Male students' level of active and supportive coping behavior was higher than female students'. Male students' level of evasive coping behavior was lower than female students'. Students who perceive their economic condition as negative were higher in active and supportive coping behavior and lower in evasive coping behavior than the students who perceive their economic condition as positive. (2) The students who were strong in work commitment were higher in active coping behavior, and lower in evasive coping behavior than those who were not. (3) The students who were willing to accept downward employment were higher in active coping behavior than those who were not.(4) The students' coping behavior concerning job-searching problems differed according to their sex role identity. (5) Work commitment and sex role identity were influential variables on university students' job-coping behavior.

Queering Narrative, Desire, and Body: Reading of Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body as a Queer Text

  • In Written on the Body, by creating the narrator's ungendered and unsexed identity, Winterson makes her text open to the reader's assumption of the narrator's sexual and gender identity. Thus, this novel has been read, on the one hand, as a lesbian text by those who assume that the narrator is a female and, on the other hand, as a suspicious text colluding with patriarchal and heterosexual values by those who define the narrator as a male. Those readings of the narrator as one of either sex/gender, however, demonstrate how (academic as well as general) readers have been accustomed to the gender-based reading habits in which textual meanings are dichotomously arranged along the lines of sex and gender of characters. Challenging those dualistic "gendered" readings, this paper reads Winterson's Written on the Body as a queer text which interrogates, troubles, and subverts the heterosexual concepts of narrative, desire, and body without reducing the narrator's identity to the essentialist sex and gender system. More specifically, this paper examines how the narrator's 'un-/over-' determined sexual and gender identity queers the narrative structure of author-character-reader; how the narrator's queer (fluid) desire is passing and traveling across categorical contours of (homo-/hetero-) sexual desires; how Winterson challenges the concept of a coherent body and queers the concept of body as a hermeneutic text with myriad textual grids which are not coherently mapped by power but randomly inscribed by nomadic desires.
