Nepal is bestowed with abundant water. With more than 1500 mm average annual rainfall in the country, a vast quantity of underutilized groundwater in the Terai belt, and the water stored in snowcaps in the Himalayas, aquifers in the mountains and glacial lakes, Nepal is potentially in an advantageous position in terms of per capita availability. However, low emphasis in management aspect of water and high emphasis in infrastructural developments related to water resources management has resulted in conversion of water in Nepal from a resource to a burden. The global climate change, reduction in number of rainy days, increase in intensity of rainfall during wet monsoon season, encroachment of river banks for settlement, inadequate release of environmental flows from hydropower plants, and attempt to tame the mighty and high velocity rivers of Nepal have resulted in increasing number of water induced disasters (flood and landslide), rise in conflict between local residents and hydropower developers, higher number of devastating landslides, and in some extreme cases mass migration of residents resulting in climate refugees. There is a ray of hope; the awareness level of the people regarding sustainable use of water resources is increasing, the benefit sharing mechanism is gradually being implemented, the role of interdisciplinary and integrated water resources management is appreciated at a higher level and the level of preparedness against flood and landslides is at a higher degree compared to a couple of decades ago. With the use of renewable energy sources, the possibilities for sustainable and productive use of water are on the rise in Nepal.

This study intends to conduct tests on subsidence and drying shrinkage by mixing CaO-CSA expansion materials to ensure the stability of CLC, and to understand its properties. Based on CLC of 0.6, the replacement ratio of CaO-CSA expansion material was conducted at five levels compared to blast furnace slag, and the results are as follows. The replacement of CaO-CSA expansion material at an appropriate level produces ethringhite and potassium hydroxide, and it is believed that the internal voids of CLC and the Tobelmorite interlayer structure are charged to increase the structural stability, leading to an increase in compressive strength and a decrease in the drying shrinkage. However, it is judged that tissue relaxation due to excessive substances in the high replacement ratio affects the stability of CLC. In the future, we will conduct additional experiments on density, absorption rate, flow test, and settlement, and evaluate and analyze the stability of CLC by selecting the optimal replacement ratio of CaO-CSA expansion materials.
This research, conducted over a three-year period starting from 2020, was a collaborative project between practitioners in the field of VE design and the Korea Expressway Corporation, aimed at innovating the design VE project to construct an intelligent ICT-based smart highway and enhancing highway driving performance and customer satisfaction. The research included R&D support for payment and management systems integrated with IOT technology, the application of the developed prototype at highway sites, and analysis of user performance evaluation. Based on the Innovation Work Roadmap of the Korea Expressway Corporation, the research process involved collaboration between a public participation group and an expert group, considering the technical feasibility of data-based ICT technology through the National Idea VE Contest. The final VE design results were implemented at the Seongnam tollgate site with budget support from relevant departments, followed by a satisfaction survey. It is expected that the continuous contributions to achieving an ESG society, such as the increase in the number of customers using the tolling zone equipped with smart upgrades, along with their satisfaction rate, and the reduction in carbon emissions and total settlement time of highway users, will be sustained.

A lab-scale Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) was applied to treat a primary sludge taken from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. In this experiment, acidogenic reaction was promoted by operating the ABR with short hydraulic retention time (HRT) to produce sufficient volatile fatty acids (VFA) instead of production of methane. The performance of ABR on the VFA production and total solids reduction was observed with different operating conditions with 2, 4, 6, and 8 days of HRT. Corresponding organic loading rates were 6.7, 3.4, 2.2, and $1.6kgCOD_{cr}/m^3{\cdot}day$. As HRT increased the removal rate of TCOD was also increased (82.5, 84.2, 96.9, and 95.9 % in average for HRT of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days, respectively) because the settlement of solids was enhanced in the baffle by the decrease of upflow velocity. At HRT of 2 days the average concentration of VFA in the effluent was measured at $1,306{\pm}552$ mgCOD/L corresponding to 107 % increment as compared to the VFA concentration in the influent. However, as HRT increased VFA concentraiotn was decreased to $143{\pm}552$ mgCOD/L at HRT of 8 days. The reduction rates of total solids were 12.2, 26.5, 24.8, and 43.0 % for HRT of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. As HRT increased the hydrolysis of organic particulate matters in the reactor was enhanced due to the increasing of solids retention time in the baffle zone with low upflow velocity in long HRT condition. Consequently, we found that a primary sludge became a good source of VFA production by the application of ABR process with HRT less than 4 days and the 12-26 % of total solids reduction was expected at these conditions.
In this study, a simple method to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of river levees was examined considering the structural characteristic of river levee, that is long, and the functional characteristic of river levee that performs temporary function against flood but is a permanent structure in the ordinary way. Considering the fact that one of the main failure modes of the levee during the earthquake are the settlement due to the strength reduction of the ground caused by the increase of the excess pore pressure in the levee body and foundation and the settlement due to liquefaction, the 2-dimensional section of the levee was regarded as the 1-dimensional section and the liquefaction potential index (LPI) for the regarded section was estimated. The estimated LPI was correlated with the seismic vulnerability of river levees. The relationship between the displacement of the levee crest caused by the earthquake and the seismic vulnerability of the levees was obtained from the results of previous researches and the correlation between the displacements of the levee crest computed by 2-dimensional dynamic coupled analyses and LPIs based on the results of 1-dimensional seismic response analyses was investigated. In connection with this correlation, as a result of examination of the correlation between LPI and the seismic vulnerability of the levee, it was concluded that the method for evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of the Korean river levee using LPI is applicable.

Architectural space consists of the interior and the exterior. The layout and (on of architectural space has a great variety of characters by region and culture. In other words, it can be understood which has a priority between the interior and the exterior in developing the layout and the form of architectural space. Belonging to the culture area of Chinese characters with Korea, Japan has maintained its own Identity. It has an identity in the layout and form of architectural space as well. Therefore, the architecture and architectural theories of the two countries were compared and analyzed with priority given to the traditional architecture, also the backgrounds of architecture and architectural theories of two countries were examined in this study. This study shows that each country has different characters in how to introduce nature, how to expand space and how to compose windows, including the view of nature and the cult of space. As a result, the space in Korean architecture has relatively the exterior-oriented character but in Japan architecture spatial character is interior-oriented. The interior-oriented character can be relevant to the word 'reduction' and the exterior-oriented character to 'extension' after all. Also it can be thought that each character has a great relation with climate and idea of people in power.

Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of single piles and grouped piles to adjacent tunnelling in the lateral direction of the pile. In the numerical analyses, the interaction between the tunnel, the pile and the soil next to the piles and shear transfer mechanism have been analysed allowing soil slip at the pile-soil interface by using interface elements. The study includes the shear stresses at the soil next to the pile, the axial force distributions on the pile and the pile settlement. It has been found that existing elastic solutions may not accurately estimate the pile behaviour since several key issues are excluded. Due to changes in the shear transfer between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, the shear stresses and axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. Downward shear stress develops above the tunnel springline while upward shear stress is mobilised below the tunnel springline, resulting in a compressive force on the pile. In addition, mobilisation of shear strength at the pile-soil interface was found to be a key factor governing pile-soil-tunnelling interaction. It has been found that grouped piles are less influenced by the tunnelling than the single pile in terms of the axial pile forces. The reduction of apparent allowable pile capacity due to pile settlement resulted from the tunnelling seemed to be insignificant.
The field plate load test has a good potential for determining modulus since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. Conventionally the modulus has been assumed to be a constant secant value defined from the settlement of the plate at a given load intensity. A constant modulus (modulus of subgrade reaction, k), however, may not be a representative value of subgrade soil under working load. Field strain(o. stress)-dependent modulus characteristics of subgrade soils, at relatively low to intermediate strains, are important in the pavement design. In this study, the field strain dependent moduli of subgrade soils were obtained using cyclic plate load test. Testing procedure and data reduction method are proposed. The field crosshole and laboratory resonant column tests were also performed to determine field nonlinear modulus at $0.001\%\;to\;0.1\%$ strains, and the modulus values and nonlinear trends are compared to those obtained by cyclic plate load tests. Both modulus values match relatively well when the different state of stress between two tests was considered, and the applicability of field cyclic plate load test for determining nonlinear modulus values of subgrade soils is verified.
This paper is to investigate the reinforcing effects of newly devised Tire-cell mat made of waste tires in sand. Parametric study on number of connection bolts between Tirecells, relative density of sand, embedded depth, number of reinforced layers and width of Tirecell mat was made by using plate loading tests. It is found that the number of connection bolt was enough to maintain the given pressure. The bearing capacity ratio(BCR), which is defined as the rate of ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced soil to that of unreinforced soil, is the highest at the lowest density. And the reinforcing effect can be obtained in case of embedded depth within 1.0B, where B is loading width. Also settlement reduction is the highest at the lowest density of sand. The effect of number of Tirecell reinforced layers with 0.4B to 0.5B interval is limited to 2 layers and further reinforcing effects can not be obtained beyond 3 layers. Especially, the bearing capacity increased remarkably at 1 layer of reinforcement and the degree of increase was small from 1 layer to 2 layers of reinforcement. The effect of mat width of Tirecell was not significant because of high stiffness of Tirecell although the maximum bearing capacity was shown at the 2.0B mat width and the reinforcing effects of Tirecell, in general, was prominent compared with those of commercial Geoweb.
The transition zone between an earthwork and a bridge effect to the vehicle's running stability because support stiffness of the roadbed is suddenly changed. The design criteria for the transition structure on ballast track were not particular in the past. However with the introduction of concrete track is introduced, it requires there is a higher performance level required because of maintenance and running stability. In this present paper, a transition structure reinforced with geosynthetics is suggested to improve the performance of existing bridge-earthwork transition structures. The suggested transition structure, in which there is reinforcing of the approach block using high-tension geosynthetics, has a structure similar to that of earth reinforced abutments. The utilized backfill materials are cement treated soil and gravel. These materials are used to reduce water intrusion into the approach block and to increase the recycling of surplus earth materials. An experiment was performed under the same conditions in order to allow a comparison of this new structure with the existing transition structure. Evaluation items are elastic displacement, cumulative settlement, and earth pressure. As for the results of the real-scale accelerated testing, the suggested transition structure has excellent performance for the reduction of earth pressure and settlement. Above all, it has high resistance the variation of the water content.
