Serviceability design of a cold-formed steel portal frame having semi-rigid joints

  • Details are given of a cold-formed steel portal framing system that uses simple bolted moment-connections for both the eaves and apex joints. However, such joints function as semi-rigid and, as a result, the design of the proposed system will be dominated by serviceability requirements. While serviceability is a mandatory design requirement, actual deflection limits for portal frames are not prescribed in many of the national standards. In this paper, a review of the design constraints that have an effect on deflection limits is discussed, and rational values appropriate for use with cold-formed steel portal frames are recommended. Adopting these deflection limits, it is shown through a design example how a cold-formed steel portal frame having semi-rigid eaves and apex joints can be a feasible alternative to rigid-jointed frames in appropriate circumstances.

Probability of exceeding the serviceability limit of antenna masts

  • With respect to serviceability, antenna masts should be designed so that wind-induced motion will not cause unacceptable lack of transmission for broadcasting users and wireless communication. For such antenna masts with directional radio transmission the serviceability limit state is predominantly governed by the tolerable change of the broadcasting angle of the mounted antenna assembly and therefore by the tip distortion of the mast. In this paper it will be shown that refinements of the present state of design of antenna masts are possible by using the statistics of extremes applied to extreme wind situations and by consideration of the statistical and reliability requirements given by the operator such as frequency and return period of passing the serviceability limit.

The serviceability requirements come from Ensuring of Running Safety and Ride Comfort of Train, Reduction of Track Maintenance Work Track-Bridge Interaction should be considered in the design of railway structures. In this study, a numerical method which precisely evaluate an axial force in rail and a rail expansion and contraction when turnout exist in succession on a CWR on a ballasted or on a ballastless track of bridge is developed. From the parameter studies using the developed method, additional stress of stock rail almost 25% is generated due to stock and lead rail interaction, even embankment not bridge. In case of ballasted track, additional stress of stock rail on bridge is very greater than on embankment, and therefore require detailed review in bridge design with turnout. Stresses of turnout rails on bridge are very sensitive according to the installed positions. In case of ballastless track, Stresses of turnout rails are similar as those of normal track

  • This study was performed to propose the minimum thickness of RC slab that satisfies constructibility, fatigue safety, and serviceability requirements such as deflection control. Three different minimum thicknesses are calculated using concrete shear and rebar fatigue formulas, and deflection control, respectively, and checked by constructiblity. The maximum of these three minimum thicknesses is proposed as the minimum thickness of RC slab, which shows that the minimum thickness requirement of RC slab from Korean Bridge Design Code can be thinner than now.

A comparative study on different walking load models

  • Excessive vibrations can occur in long-span structures such as floors or footbridges due to occupant?s daily activity like walking and cause a so-called vibration serviceability issue. Since 1970s, researchers have proposed many human walking load models, and some of them have even been adopted by major design guidelines. Despite their wide applications in structural vibration serviceability problems, differences between these models in predicting structural responses are not clear. This paper collects 19 popular walking load models and compares their effects on structure?s responses when subjected to the human walking loads. Model parameters are first compared among all these models including orders of components, dynamic load factors, phase angles and function forms. The responses of a single-degree-of-freedom system with various natural frequencies to the 19 load models are then calculated and compared in terms of peak values and root mean square values. Case studies on simulated structures and an existing long-span floor are further presented. Comparisons between predicted responses, guideline requirements and field measurements are conducted. All the results demonstrate that the differences among all the models are significant, indicating that in a practical design, choosing a proper walking load model is crucial for the structure?s vibration serviceability assessment.

  • 도로교설계기준 내진설계편은 붕괴방지수준의 확보를 설계절차에 의해 규정하고 있는 반면 기능수행수준의 확보에 대한 요구사항은 명확하게 제시하고 있지 않다. 붕괴방지수준의 확보를 위해 기본적으로 제시된 설계방법은 응답수정계수를 사용하는 스펙트럼해석법으로, 기능수행수준은 설계과정에 적용되는 위험도계수와 응답수정계수에 의해 결정 되어진다. 위험도계수는 교량의 중요도에 따라 단순하게 적용할 수 있으나 중약진지역에서의 응답수정계수 적용은 설계조건에 따라 다른 결과를 갖게 된다. 이 연구에서는 중약진지역의 일반 도로교량을 대상으로 내진설계를 수행하여 기능수행수준의 결정과정을 검토하고, 이 결과를 토대로 기능수행수준의 확보와 관련하여 내진설계편에 보완해야 하는 사항을 제시하였다.

  • The use of higher strength materials with the strength methed of design has resulted in more slender member and shallower sections. For this reason, it is necessary to satisfy the requirements of serviceability even though the structural safety is the most important limit state. This paper is only concerned with the control of deflections in the serviceability. In this study, an analytical model is presented to predict the deflections of reinforced concrete beams to given loading and environmental conditions. This model is based on the finite element approach in which a finite element is generally divided into a number of stiffening effect due to cracking, creep and shrinkage. Comparisons are made with available measured deflections reported by others to assess the capability of the layered beam model. The calculated values of instantaneous and long-term deflection show good agreement with experimental results in the range of tension stiffening parameter $\beta$ between 2.5 and 3.0.

  • W-Project is 70-story mixed-use residential building complex project in Busan, the second biggest city in South Korea. As it is a high rise building complex located at the coast, the residents have great ocean view from the height. Though, there were many difficult challenges to be solved to secure structural safety and meet the serviceability requirements. As it is located on the reclaimed land, securing the foundation bearing capacity on soft soil is the first issue to be solved for the stable structure. W-Project. Busan on the way usual track of typhoon, wind load on structure is also critical for structural safety and serviceability for occupants due to wind vibration. This paper will address process of lateral load resisting structural system of W-Project.

  • In General, post-installed dowel bars are used as a shear connector to ensure the composite actions between new slabs and existing slabs in an apartment remodelling constructions expecially for enlarging the interior space outward the existing buildings. But, it has not been checked that the connection performance between existing and new slab is satisfactory not only for the structural safety condition but also the for serviceability and dwelling requirements. In this research, an experimental works were presented to evaluate the load transfer capacity for the planar joints between existing and new slab. The existing slabs were obtained from the existing apartment housing which will be demolished. Test results showed that the planar joints with post-installed dowel bars behaved in full composite modes until ultimate capacity of test specimens, so sufficient ultimate and serviceability performance are confirmed.
