A Study on Vibration Serviceability Evaluation of Continuous Slab Bridges (연속슬래브교의 진동사용성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Extraordinary displacement and vibration by heavy vehicle causes passengers to feel mental uncomfortableness and bridge to be damaged. To increase serviceability, the research on the human influence for vibration to happen at the bridge has been performed for a long time in oversea but it does not draw concern relatively in the domestic. The purpose of this research is to develop an evaluation method for vibration serviceability of continuous slab bridge. This research is focused on establishing theoretical method to assess vibration serviceability of bridge considering natural frequency, displacement, and acceleration since the criteria for the human responses to vibration is generally based on frequency band. By examining the characteristics of vibration serviceability which has been assessed with human response curve through field experiments as well as analytical study, the evaluation method of vibration serviceability for continuous slab bridges is proposed. Based on applications to the example of continuous slab bridge, the simple evaluation of vibration serviceability in the paper may be used in the initial step of design practice.

Serviceability evaluation methods for high-rise structures considering wind direction

  • High-rise buildings are very slender and flexible. Their low stiffness values make them vulnerable to horizontal loads, such as those associated with wind or earthquakes. For high-rise buildings, the threat to serviceability caused by wind-induced vibration is an important problem. To estimate the serviceability under wind action, the response acceleration of a building at the roof height is used. The response acceleration is estimated by the same wind speed at all wind directions. In general, the effect of wind direction is not considered. Therefore, the response accelerations obtained are conservative. If buildings have typical plans and strong winds blow from relatively constant wind directions, it is necessary to account for the wind direction to estimate the response accelerations. This paper presents three methods of evaluating the response accelerations while considering the effects of wind direction. These three serviceability evaluation methods were estimated by combining the wind directional frequency data obtained from a weather station with the results of a response analysis using wind tunnel tests. Finally, the decrease in the efficiencies of the response acceleration for each serviceability evaluation method was investigated by comparing the response acceleration for the three methods accounting for wind direction with the response acceleration in which wind direction was not considered.

  • In this study, the boundary non-linear analysis of the sky bridge subjected to walking load and running load is performed. The sky bridge is installed in the mid-story between two buildings and the walking load and running load induced by pedestrians are measured by load cell. LRB is modeled as a non-linear hysteresis model to accurately represent the behavior of LRB. For the serviceability evaluation of sky bridge, the acceleration responses of sky bridge are analyzed based on ISO 2631-2 and the velocity response are analyzed based on standards Bachmann &Amann. In serviceability evaluation of this sky bridge, the pedestrian can not perceive the vibration except for resonance running loads consequently. Therefore, it is concluded that this sky bridge haven't problem in the serviceability.

  • Pavement management systems (PMS) provide procedures to quantify road serviceability based on pavement conditions such as cracks and plastic deformation and suggest proper maintenance methods. The deterioration of the road pavement is relevant to the time although the quantifications on road serviceability in PMS present road surface conditions at the evaluation. More systematic evaluation on road serviceability may need time-dependent factors of road environments and that can improve PMS. Rainfall, temperature and vehicle loads can be environmental factors for road serviceability evaluation. As no data are avablie that can link between road conditions and environmental road factors, we conducted experiments to suggest economical devices and methods to obtain relevant data. We used temperature sensors and accelerometers with Arduino to measure road surface temperature and dynamic loads and provide data to improve pavement serviceability evaluation.

  • This paper aims to introduce a concept of the integrated structural design for the tall building using STEP(Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data). STEP(ISO 10303) is an international standard for the computer-interpretable representation and exchange of product data and it provides a consistent data exchange format and application interfaces between different application systems. The structural systems for tall buildings are often controlled by the need to restrict wind responses at serviceability levels. In this study. the STEP entities for serviceability evaluation are proposed.

  • As global climate change leaded to extensive natural disaster and radical deterioration of infrastructures, there was increased attentions for the evaluation of infrastructures. After the collapse of Seongsu Bridge in 1994, Korea has enacted the "Special act on safety and maintenance of facilities" and secured the safety of facilities using systematic and periodic safety inspections. However, current facility inspections are mainly performed by the physical defect and structural analysis, and do not properly consider the serviceability of infrastructure such as capacity of facility and user's satisfaction. Thus, the purpose of the study is to develop an evaluation criteria for serviceability of infrastructures and finally leading to the revision of "Special Act on safety and maintenance of facilities in rational manner.

  • Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and fiexible, and so have problems of vibration. In general, the serviceability of RC slabs was known to be good against vibration because of its hardness. However recent high-rise apartment slabs are mostly light and long, the serviceability about vibration problems of RC slabs was performed. Basic information and its influence on vibrations of RC slabs were revealed. Also, its serviceability against vibration was examined. Many tests were conducted on existing building located in Chung-Nam area. As a results, damping ratio, natural frequency, acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude which were used to examine serviceability of the RC slabs were obtained. These results on the test building proved that its serviceability conditions were satified to meet the code against vibration.

  • This paper aims for analyzing the vibration serviceability of train by simply expressing its vertical vibration when it passes a railway bridge. For this purpose, bridge-train transfer function was derived and bridge-train interaction analysis was performed by using the derived function. The bridge-train transfer function was developed with the assumption that train is a single mass-spring system, and bridge-train interaction analysis was performed on simple beams of KTX passenger car. The vertical acceleration signals of passenger cars obtained from bridge-train interaction analysis were compared with them of cars obtained from the bridge-train transfer function. As a result, it could be estimated to express the vertical vibration inside the passenger car required for vibration serviceability evaluation by using the vertical vibration of bridges obtained from moving load analysis. Therefore, it may be possible to evaluate the vibration serviceability of railway bridges considering bridge-train interaction effect.

  • In general, deflection limit criteria of bridge design specifications would have been considered based on the static serviceability and structural stability. Dynamic serviceability induced from bridge vibration, as a comfort limit, actually has not been included in the criteria. Thus, it is necessary for dynamic serviceability to be considered in bridge vibration problems and for comfort limit on vibration to be needed for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges. In this paper, comfort limits of bridge structures considering the time duration exposed by vibration were examined with frequency and time dependent comfort limits, and they were evaluated by using the vibration signals measured from the existing bridges. Therefore, it is resulted that the time-dependent comfort limit considering the duration of vibration is an efficient estimate for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges.
