A Study on the Serious Games Design Framework via Potential Outcomes - Focused on Construal Level Interventions

  • Although many studies have considered the outcomes and impacts of serious games, little is known about the factors which affect a user's perception or interpretation in games during the process of decision making from theoretical perspectives. This study aimed to explore the process of user perception from the perspective of construal level theory, and to suggest a theoretical design approach for the development of effective serious games. In the current study, cognitive and affective learning outcomes were articulated through literature review and synthesized into a series of assumptions with persuasive and educational aspects in serious games. Serious games reflect the potential of the game mechanism for changing players' perception, and helping with knowledge acquisition of the users. The potential to use construal level theory for effective serious games interventions was suggested, and a Serious Games Design Framework was proposed via potential outcomes from recent advanced research. Finally, implications of the application of the suggested model with various-related purposes and directions for future research were discussed. The model could be useful not only for game researchers and designers, but also for game marketers in attracting potential consumers.

A Proposal of Quality Evaluating Model for Serious Game Contents

  • This paper is on the premise that we need objective and measurable researches on quality evaluation of serious game for users' correct selection of games fitting for their purposes, for development of competitive high-quality game, and for stable growth of game industry. At first, we looked into various characteristics of serious game, read the present situation of game market, and proposed the necessity of quality evaluating model for serious game. To guarantee the objectivity of the proposed models, we compared and analyzed various proposals of standard model on the basis of international standard quality-evaluating model, ISO/IEC 9126 S/W. And so we extracted quality-evaluating items for serious game that composed of 8 evaluating areas and 25 sub-attributes, and presented quality-evaluating indices of each area. The proposed quality-evaluating model was added 2 areas and 8 sub-attributes to the international standard model, and the validity of the extracted items' was verified by expert group's questionnaire. Accordingly, we expect that this paper will increase game users' satisfaction, promote the development of high-quality games, and contribute to continuous growth in serious game market.

Cognitive process to evaluate serious games for the elderly

  • This paper aims to propose a cognitive evaluation model to be utilized in designing game devices and developing relevant software with the purpose of the prevention of dementia of the elderly among various types of serious games for the elderly intending to improve their physical, mental or social capability. Firstly, a serious game for the elderly has been developed based on the guidelines of the areas pertaining to existing hardware, software and contents. Secondly, a pre-experiment of the game targeting specialists has been conducted in order to re-establish a cognitive evaluation model for the developed result. Thirdly, the cognitive evaluation model for the serious game for the elderly that intends to improve their cognitive capacity has been materialized based on the experiment results. Given the fact that the scope of game contents, most of which used to be focused on teenagers, have been gradually expanding to cover wider range of social classes than ever before, it is expected that the results of this study could be utilized as a model that can verify the games and their contents with special purposes based on the cognitive evaluation of the users.

A Development of Motion Detection Based Serious Game "ChoDeungGangHo" for Physical Training

  • In this paper we propose a method to analyze user's motion as a game command, and implement a sports serious game applied the motion analysis method as a command interpreter. Recently, various contents platforms appear in industrial market, the computer game contents plays an important role in these emerging platforms as a killer contents. The computer game has enough values as an independent major cultural product, moreover it has the potential to be applied in various other fields such as education, healthcare, training, and so on. It could motivate users to do something continuously, and it could also support an immersive environment in a certain special game contents such as VR game. The Serious game 'ChoDeungGangHo', implemented in this paper, is the sensory healthcare serious game based on 3D run game and fitness game. It is designed for user to train the various exercise element by just playing the game, and it also supports the user management system and the linkage of social media. We proposes the sensory serious game 'ChoDeungGangHo' as a model of commercial serious game.

  • This study was conducted with preliminary to develop the game contents for designing of sexual violence prevention serious game for school teachers. It is proposed to use of sexual violence prevention serious game with the analysis of the audience and a new approach. For this purpose, Gordon method and Service Blueprint method were applied in design thinking. The results from analyzing the audiences were to reflect the components of corresponding with the goal of the serious game, and interest and motivation for continuing education. Also, it was proposed to give the certificate of education participation to teachers attended in the serious game in-service education.

  • This paper deals with the elderly serious game design which makes full use of the existing arcade game machine. This serious game is on the issue for its positive role recently. Serious arcade game for the elderly which is made up arcade platform-based combined contents manufacture technology has an element which is having a fun for building up physical and mental health. It also has a special objective which can prevent against senile dementia. Above-mentioned serious arcade game which has a special objective in both hardware part and software part is needed to study how to design. Accordingly, this paper presents how to make up special-purpose entertainment machine and contents development by biologic, social, and psychological researches and data about the elderly - main users. We hope that this paper can be used as a base for expansion of new industrial field by integrating new product development for the elderly with high game technology.With the help of information technology

  • Serious games combine game entertainment with original purpose in special fields(education, health, sport, military, public), Now, many serious games have been developing in this country, but main points on development factors in serious games have not been presented. In this paper, we analyze existing games which were developed for psychotherapy with essential factors of human-service game presented by Hy Resnick and Moshe Sherer, for developing serious games in psychotherapy field. And, we discuss development methods of psychotherapy game based on the analyzed factors. This paper shows theoretical bases in serious game for psychotherapy, provides guidelines for developers to produce a serious game in psychotherapy.

  • With the increasing popularity of computer games as a leisure activity, there has been a rise in the interest in the effectiveness of serious games. Many of the earlier researches are focused on evaluation of effects, types, developments of serious games, whereas little is known about the after effects of serious games. The aim of this paper is to examine the previous literatures on serious games in regard to their impacts and outcomes of gaming for the purpose of empirical evidence as impacts and outcomes are needed for exploratory study of variable outcomes of educational serious games. It is worth noting that current review would be used as an outcome indicator for verifying the after effects of both cognitive and educational after the usage of these educational serious games.

  • In this paper, we have described a survey of applications and results of serious games for science education in elementary and middle school students. We constructed the educational contents and curriculum for learning natural science principles through game contents by analyzing science course of elementary and middle schools. Based on this curriculum, we developed science educational serious games 'Science Heroes' to help teaching-learning difficulty caused by abstract science concepts or spatial-temporal limitation. In our research, we carried out a serious game evaluation test for our game contents by current teachers about applicability to the real education field and supplementary points.

A Study on University Students' Intention to Use Video Contents as an Information Source of Serious Leisure Activities (대학생의 진지한 여가 활동 정보원으로서 동영상 콘텐츠 이용 의도에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims at exploring what kinds of factors affect university students to choose video contents as information sources of serious leisure activities. Among other, It focuses on the effect of information quality and cognitive authority. This study analyzed 209 sets of data collected by conducting an online survey of university students from across the country. The implications and results of this study are as follows: First, among the sub-components of information quality, timeliness, relevance, and accuracy had a positive effect significantly on the intention of video contents use as an serious leisure information source, and among those of cognitive authority, the characteristics of platforms was the most influential one. Second, the multiple regression analysis was used to figure out that, some sub-components of cognitive authority turned out to have a positive effect significantly on the evaluation of information quality. This study has a significant meaning in that it investigated the intention of video content use with the two factors (information quality and cognitive authority), especially at this time when more and more people are enjoying video contents as an serious leisure information source.
