  • The severe shortage of the available sites in the highly developed downtown area in Korea necessitates the construction of high-rise buildings which meet the need of residence and commercial activity simultaneously. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of building structures. For this purpose, two 1 :12 scale 17-story reinforced concrete model structures were constructed according to the similitude law, in which the upper 15 stories have a bearing-wall system while the lower 2-story frames have two different layouts of the plan The one is a moment-resisting frame system and the other is a moment-resisting frame system with a infilled shear wall. Then, this model was subjected to a series of earthquake excitations. The test results show that the existence of shear wall reduced the shear deformation at the piloti frame, but has almost the negligible effect on the reduction of the overturning-moment angle.

  • A series of system dynamics model was developed for forecasting demand and supply of human resource in the electricity industry. To forecast demand of human resource in the electric power industry, BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) methodology was used. To forecast supply of human resource in the electric power industry, forecasting on the population of our country and the number of students in the department of electrical engineering were performed. After performing computer simulation with developed system dynamics model, it is discovered that the shortage of human resource in the electric power industry will be 3,000 persons per year from 2006 to 2015, and more than a double of current budget is required to overcome this shortage of human resource.

  • This paper describes a hierarchical method for image-based age estimation that combines age group classification and age value estimation. The proposed method uses a coarse-to-fine strategy with different appearance features to describe facial shape and texture. Considering the damage to continuity between neighboring groups caused by fixed divisions during age group classification, a dynamic grouping technique is employed to allow non-fixed groups. Based on the given group, an ordinal hyperplane ranking (OHRank) model is employed to transform age estimation into a series of binary enquiry problems that can take advantage of the intrinsic correlation and ordinal information of age. A set of experiments on FG-NET are presented and the results demonstrate the validity of our solution.

  • An orificed fluid damper(OFD) having the capacity of about 2 tons was designed and fabricated, and series of tests were performed to grasp the fundamental performance characteristics of it. Several important findings were observed and introduced in this paper. It was applied to a 6-story steel structure under random excitation and seismic excitation for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absolution. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of an OFD to the test structure is very effective in reduction of vibration level of the higher modes as well as the fundamental mode. Maxwell model was adopted to describe the frequency-dependent characteristics of the fabricated OFD and the numerical simulation was carried for the test structure. It was confirmed that the experimentally and numerically simulated results agree well.

  • Currently, in evaluating a flexural strength of a concrete member, the effect of specimen depth has not been systematically studied, even though its effect on ultimate strength of a section is very important. For all types of loading conditions, the trend is that the strength of a member tends to decrease when the member depth increases. In this study, the influence of specimen depth on flexural compressive strength of concrete member was examined experimentally. A series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive force and bending moment were tested using three geometrically similar specimens with different length-to depth ratios (h/c = 1, 2 and 4) which have compressive strength of 55 MPa. The results indicate that the flexural compressive strength decreased as the specimen depth increased. A model equation was derived based on regression analyses of the experimental data. Also, the results show that ultimate strain decreases as the specimen depth increases. Finally, a general model equation for the depth effect is proposed.

  • The purpose of this paper Is to present and discuss some of evaporation and desiccation observed in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions, and is to improve PTM(Progressive Trenching Method) operating technique. PTM is the technically feasible and economically justifiable dewatering and desiccation technique for dredged material containment areas. A series of laboratory experiments with large model test were carried out to get evaporation rate and strength increase. Surface desiccation of dredged material is basically changed by evaporation characteristics which is controlled by weather and trench type, etc. This study shows that trench depth and rain fall are important factors in desiccation of dredged soft clay.

  • It is observed that debris mitred with a wide range of soil particles and water moves downwards like viscous fluid soon after a landslide has triggered. An Assumption can be made from the field observation that the debris flow behaves as a kind of non(non-Newtoniron) Newtonian fluid which has non linear viscosity. In this study, a series of viscosity tests are carried out to measure rheological properties of debris by using a viscometer with semples taken from a landslide site. It is proved that debris flows behave as Bingham plastic mod el of non-Newtonian fluid. This model can be used predict the movement of debris flows.

  • A vertical skin model with two detachable environmental chambers was developed to simulate a Human-Clothing-Environment system and to evaluate heat and moisture transport properties of textile materials under severe conditions and during transient states. The construction of the system was described and data reproducibility and accuracy of the instrument were verified by using PEG treated nonwovens. Also advantages over a traditional static type experiment were demonstrated based on a series of experiments.

  • The adjusting parameter set which enable control systems to locate on stability limit can be derived from theoretical or trial methods for an existing real system. The data from the results are much available to keep a system in the Proper stability condition even to site engineers who are inexperienced in the control system. In this paper, a general one loop control system was adopted for a model system the process of which was assumed to consist of a time-delay element and a first order-lag element in series. After obtaining the corresponding parameter set for the model system by mathematical procedures, their loci on the parameter space was taken according to frequency change. The parameter set loci of stability limit showed unique pattern, and particularity , the curves on the Kg-Ti parameter space were able to be generalized in the form of, an unique exponential formula. These properties were also compared with the results taken from experimental procedures by Nyquist response method and Ziegler & Nichols method on the time domain, and both results were confirmed to be nearly same.

  • A simplified one-dimensional analysis has been performed to predict the local pressure distributions in Y-Jet twin-fluid atomizers. Fluid compressibility was considered both in the gas(air) and two-phase(mixing) ports. The annular-mist flow model was adopted to analyze the flow in the mixing port. A series of experiments also has been performed; the results show that the air flow rate increases and the liquid flow rate decreases with the increase of the air injection pressure and/or with the decrease of the liquid injection pressure. From the measured injection pressures and flow rates, the appropriate constants for the correlations of the pressure loss coefficients and the rate of drop entrainment were decided. The local pressures inside the nozzle by prediction reasonably agree with those by the experiments.
