  • This paper described design as a purposeful human activity for solving its problems. This means, problem solving is finding a way to get from some initial situation to a desired goal.In order to do this, like a voyage, there should be a compass, and a route map to guide the designer through the design process. Evaluation gives information about the way a design is proceeding and suggests the direction in which change should be made in order that the complex of design concepts should be fulfilled in a satisfactory manner.I think Pugh's total design model discussing in this paper takes a layered approach through a series of sequential actions, part of which is to find the product status. Each layer has the $$\mu$ti-dimensional elements, Product Design Specification (PDS) around the design core. I made a comparative study of several evaluation tools wi th Pugh's model and examined the criteria for evaluation and the rating / weighing methods. It needs, however, more study in order that PDSs may have its values and be fixed from the dynamic design concepts.

  • Mordern Ocean-going ships utilize stabilization techniques in order to minimize the effects of oscillations due to the unwanted disturbances. In this paper, as an elementary design of automatic control system with linear-state vari;tble feedback and series compensator for ship stabilization, analysis and design is limited to the linear time-invariant single input and output system. In order for the Controlled system to meet the requirements of stability, accuracy and transient response, a model of the automatic control system is proposed. For the analysis and design of this model, the state-space method, that is, the mordern way, or an alternative to the transfer function method of describing a linear system that utilize the state variables and state equations, is applied.

  • The quality of the products/processes has been improved remarkably since robust design (RD) methodology is applied into the practice manufacturing processes. A model building method based on the dual responses methods for multiple and time oriented responses on a drug development process is employed in this paper instead of the previous methods that handle the static nature of data and single response. Subsequently, the optimal solutions of a multiple and time series RD problem are obtained by using the proposed augmented weighted Tchebycheff method that has a significant flexibility on assigning weights. Finally, a pharmaceutical case study associated with a generic drug development process is conducted in order to illustrate the efficient optimal solutions from the proposed model.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of experiments conducted to model a magnetorheological damper operated in shear mode. The prototype MR damper consists of two parallel steel plates; a paddle covered with an MR fluid coated foam is placed between the plates. The force is generated when the paddle is in motion and the MR fluid is reached by the magnetic field of the coil in one end of the device. Two approaches were considered in this experiment: a parametric approach based on the Bingham, Bouc-Wen and Hyperbolic Tangent models and a non parametric approach based on a Neural Network model. The accuracy to reproduce the MR damper behavior is compared as well as some aspects related to performance are discussed.

  • In this work a numerical method to simulate the response of reinforced concrete structures subject to cyclically imposed displacements is proposed. The method consists of a combination of a displacement and load controlled version of the Newton-Raphson iterative technique, used for the loading and the unloading part of the cycles respectively. The whole procedure is combined with a relatively simple concrete model whose only material parameter is its uniaxial compressive strength. The proposed methodology may realistically simulate, in an easy way, the physical process of any experimentally tested RC structure under imposed displacements cycles. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated through a series of analyses of experimentally tested specimens reported in the literature.

  • Hidden Markov Model is one of the most successful and popular tools for modeling real world sequential data. Real world signals come in a variety of shapes and variabilities, among which temporal and spectral ones are the prime targets that the HMM aims at. A new problem that is gaining increasing attention is characterizing missing observations in incomplete data sequences. They are incomplete in that there are holes or omitted measurements. The standard HMM algorithms have been developed for complete data with a measurements at each regular point in time. This paper presents a modified algorithm for a discrete HMM that allows substantial amount of omissions in the input sequence. Basically it is a variant of Baum-Welch which explicitly considers the case of isolated or a number of omissions in succession. The algorithm has been tested on online handwriting samples expressed in direction codes. An extensive set of experiments show that the HMM so modeled are highly flexible showing a consistent and robust performance regardless of the amount of omissions.

  • We show that the modular equation ${\phi}^{T_n}_m$ (X, Y) for the Thompson series $T_n$ corresponding to ${\Gamma}_0$(n) gives an affine model of the modular curve $X_0$(mn) which has better properties than the one derived from the modular j invariant. Here, m and n are relative prime. As an application, we construct a ring class field over an imaginary quadratic field K by singular values of $T_n(z)\;and\;T_n$(mz).

  • In this study, a series of numerical simulation of dam break flow was conducted using EFDC model, and input conditions including cell size, time step, and turbulent eddy viscosity were considered to analyze parameter sensitivity. In case of coarse mesh layout, the propagated length of the shock wave front was ${\Delta}_x$ longer than that of other mesh layouts, and the velocity results showed jagged edge, which can be cured by applying fine grid mesh. Turbulent eddy viscosity influenced magnitude of the maximum velocity passing through gate up to 20% and the cell Peclet number less than 2.0 ensured no numerical oscillations.

  • The objective of this paper is to design and implement sliding mode control scheme for an actuation system using BLDC motor. Since the dynamic characteristics of this system with unknown disturbance and parameter variations are very complicated and highly nonlinear, the conventional linear control approaches may not guarantee satisfactory control performances. In order to improve the dynamic performances of this system, a model following sliding mode control(MFSMC) with perturbation estimation approach is designed and implemented. It eliminates the conventional requirements for the knowledge of uncertainty upper boundary. The effectiveness of this control approach is verified by comparison with a PID control through a series of simulation and experimental studies.

  • In this paper, we propose fuzzy-neural Networks(FNN) which is useful for identification algorithms. The proposed FNN model consists of two steps: the first step, which determines premise and consequent parameters approximately using FCM_RI method, the second step, which adjusts the premise and consequent parameters more precisely by gradient descent algorithm. The FCM_RI algorithm consists FCM clustering algorithm and Recursive least squared(RLS) method, this divides the input space more efficiently than convention methods by taking into consideration correlations between components of sample data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed FNN model, we use the time series data for gas furnace.
