  • This paper presents a method for optima] placement of series capacitors in order to improve the power system transient stability, using genetic algorithms. For the formulation, this paper considers the objective function which is the energy margin as the difference between transient energy and critical energy. The most important factor in determining an accurate critical energy is the controlling unstable equilibrium point (UEP). This paper proposes the controlling UEP methods, concurrently with the DFP(Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method, which enables the enhancement of multi-machine analysis. The proposed method is applied to 6-bus, 7-line, 4-machine model system to show its effectiveness in determining the locations to install series capacitors and the it's size to be installed in system, simultaneously.

  • In this paper, a method for the daily maximum load forecasting which uses a chaotic time series in power system and artificial neural network. We find the characteristics of chaos in power load curve and then determine a optimal embedding dimension and delay time. For the load forecast of one day ahead daily maximum power, we use the time series load data obtained in previous year. By using of embedding dimension and delay time, we construct a strange attractor in pseudo phase plane and the artificial neural network model trained with the attractor mentioned above. The one day ahead forecast errors are about 1.4% for absolute percentage average error.

  • Five new series of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivatives carrying important pharamacophores, viz., amide, ester, ether and active secondary aryl moieties have been designed and synthesized through multistep reactions starting from thiodiglycolic ester and diethyl oxalate. They have been characterized by elemental and spectral data. All the target compounds have been screened for their anticonvulsant activity at three different models viz. maximal electroshock (MES), subcutaneous metrazole (scMET), and 6 Hz screen and evaluated for their neurotoxicity in rotorod model. Compound 6a emerged as lead with no neurotoxicity. All the five series of compounds are safe in the toxicity studies at the maximum dose of 300 mg/kg of body weight. Amongst the tested compounds, the ester pharmacophore with thioamide fragment has showed better activity than the other analogs.

  • A self-organizing map (SOM) can be seen as an analytical tool to discover some underlying rules in the given data set. Based on such distinctive nature called topology-preserving projection, a new method for generating intermediate patterns was proposed. Then, following to this method, producing animation as a series of backward-projected patterns just like a flip book is tried in this article.

  • In this study, we present a training method of radial basis function networks based on recursive modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm for single step prediction of chaotic time series. With single step predictions of Mackey-Glass time series and alpha-rhythm EEG which has chaotic characteristics, the radial basis function network trained by this method is compared with one trained by a classical non-recursive method and the radial basis function model proposed by X.D. He and A. Lapedes. The results show the effectiveness of the training method.

  • A new closed-form expressions to calculate frequency-dependent distributed inductance and the associated distributed series resistance of single interconnect on a lossy silicon substrate (CMOS technology) are presented. The proposed analytic model for series impedance is based on a self-consistent field method and the vector magnetic potential equation. It is shown that the calculated frequency-dependent distributed inductance and the associated resistance are in good agreement with the results obtained from rigorous full wave solutions and CAD-oriented equivalent-circuit modeling approach.

  • The paper focuses on dynamic analyses of a series of simply-supported symmetric composite steel-concrete bridges loaded by an ICE-3 train moving at high speeds up to 300 km/h. The series includes five bridges with span lengths ranging from 15 m to 27 m, with repeatable geometry of the superstructures. The objects, designed according to Polish standards valid from 1980s to 2010, are modelled on the bridges serviced on the Central Main Line in Poland since 1980s. The advanced, two-dimensional, physically nonlinear model of the bridge-track structure-high-speed train system takes into account unilateral nonlinear wheel-rail contact according to Hertz's theory and random vertical track irregularities equal for both rails. The analyses are focused on the influence of random track irregularities on dynamic response of composite steel-concrete bridges loaded by an ICE-3 train. It has been pointed out that certain restrictions on the train speed and on vertical track irregularities should be imposed.

  • The objective of this paper is to characterize dynamic pressure traces measured at self-excited combustion instabilities occurring in two combustion systems of different hardware. One system is a model lean premixed gas turbine combustor and the other a fullscale bipropellant liquid rocket thrust chamber. It is commonly observed in both systems that low frequency waves at around 300㎐ are first excited at the onset of combustion instabilities and after a short duration, the instability mode becomes coupled to the resonant acoustic modes of the combustion chamber, the first longitudinal mode for the lean premixed combustor and the first tangential mode for the rocket thrust chamber. Low frequency waves seem to get excited at first since flame shows the higher heat release response on the lower frequency perturbations with the smaller phase differences between heat release and pressure fluctuations. Nonlinear time series analysis of pressure traces reveals that even stable combustion might have chaotic behavior with the positive maximum Lyapunov exponent. Also, pressure fluctuations under combustion instabilities reach a limit cycle or quasi-periodic oscillations at the very similar run conditions, which manifest that a self-excited high frequency instability has strong nonlinear characteristics.

  • A digital 6-dof motion measuring system is developed using 7 accelerometers following Miles'[1] method. A snoic wave height gauge is also developed to measure the relative wave height at the foremost end of the ship. By combining the time series of both 6-dof motions and relative wave height, we can estimate the time series of real sea wave. Results of model tests shows the validity of the developed system.
