  • The vehicle development process (VDP) is iterative in nature with numerous interactions and information flows between design groups and between development phases. The VDP has been changed from a sequential-functional development to a concurrent-team based approach. Concurrent execution of design activities may reduce the development lead-time, but it increases the managerial complexity in the VDP. A system dynamics model was developed to understand the transient behavior of parallel, overlap, and sequential processes in the VDP and to determine the optimal level of overlapping considering the development lead-time and total number of reworks. The simulation results showed that different execution processes should be used, depending upon the intensity of reworks.

  • To overcome the large hardware overhead attendant in the full scan design, the concept of partial scan design has emerged with the virtue of less area and testability close to full scan. Combinational Structure has been developed to avoid the use of sequential test generator. But the patterns sifted on scan register have to be held for sequential depth period upon the aid of the dedicated HOLD circuit. In this paper, a new levelized structure is introduced aiming to exclude the need of extra HOLD circuit. The time to stimulate each scan latch is uniquely determined on this structure, hence each test pattern can e applied by scan shifting and then pulsing a system clock like the full scan but with much les scan flip-flops. Experimental results show that some sequential circuits are levelized by just scanning self-loop flip-flops.

  • The shape of plate-fin type heat sink is numerically optimized to acquire the minimum pressure drop under the required temperature rise. In constrained nonlinear optimization problems of thermal/fluid systems, three fundamental difficulties such as high computational cost for function evaluations (i.e., pressure drop and thermal resistance), the absence of design sensitivity information, and the occurrence of numerical noise are commonly confronted. Thus, a sequential approximate optimization (SAO) algorithm has been introduced because it is very hard to obtain the optimal solutions of fluid/thermal systems by means of gradient-based optimization techniques. In this study, the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM) based on the trust region algorithm, which is one of sequential approximate optimization algorithms, is used for optimization and the heat sink is optimized by combining it with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

  • Many researchers have recently studied multi-level formulation strategies to solve the MDO problems and they basically distributed the coupling compatibilities across all disciplines, while single-level formulations concentrate all the controls at the system-level. In addition, approximation techniques became remedies for computationally expensive analyses and simulations. This paper studies comparisons of the MDO methods with respect to computing performance considering both conventional sequential and modem distributed/parallel processing environments. The comparisons show Individual Disciplinary Feasible (IDF) formulation is the most efficient for sequential processing and IDF with approximation (IDFa) is the most efficient for parallel processing. Results incorporating to popular design examples show this finding. The author suggests design engineers should firstly choose IDF formulation to solve MDO problems because of its simplicity of implementation and not-bad performance. A single drawback of IDF is requiring more memory for local design variables and coupling variables. Adding cheap memories can save engineers valuable time and effort for complicated multi-level formulations and let them free out of no solution headache of Multi-Disciplinary Analysis (MDA) of the Multi-Disciplinary Feasible (MDF) formulation.

  • For effective construction of second-order response surface models, an efficient quad ratic approximation method is proposed in the context of trust region model management strategy. In the proposed method, although only the linear and quadratic terms are uniquely determined using 2n+1 design points, the two-factor interaction terms are mathematically updated by normalized quasi-Newton formula. In order to show the numerical performance of the proposed approximation method, a sequential approximate optimizer is developed and solves a typical unconstrained optimization problem having 2, 6, 10, 15, 30 and 50 design variables, a gear reducer system design problem and two dynamic response optimization problems with multiple objectives, five objectives for one and two objectives for the other. Finally, their optimization results are compared with those of the CCD or the 50% over-determined D-optimal design combined with the same trust region sequential approximate optimizer. These comparisons show that the proposed method gives more efficient than others.

  • In order to efficiently optimize the problem involving complex computer codes or computationally expensive simulation, surrogate models are widely used. Because their accuracy significantly depends on sample points, many experimental designs have been proposed. One approach is the sequential design of experiments that consider existing information of responses. In earlier research, the correlation coefficients of the kriging surrogate model are introduced as weight parameters to define the scaled distance between sample points. However, if existing information is incorrect or lacking, new sample points can be misleading. Thus, our goal in this paper is to propose a weight function derived from correlation coefficients to generate new points robustly. To verify the performance of the proposed method, several existing sequential design methods are compared for use as mathematical examples.

  • This paper proposes sequential control charts with an upper bound on sample size. Existing sequential control charts have no restriction on the number of observations at a sampling point. For situations where sampling and testing an item is time-consuming or expensive, sequential control charts may not be directly applied. When the number of observations in a sampling point reaches the upper bound and there is no out-of-control signal, the proposed cumulative sequential control chart defers the decision to the next sampling point of which starting value is the value of the current statistic. Two Markov chains, inner and outer chains, are used to derive the formulas for evaluating the performance of the proposed chart. It is compared with $\bar{X}$ and cumulative sum control charts with fixed and variable sample sizes. The fast initial response (FIR) feature is studied. Guidelines for the design of the proposed charts are also given.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examines the effect of corruption pressure in host country on sequential investment. The study further investigates how the information acquisition capacity of MNEs and the political tie in the host country had a moderating effect on the relationship between corruption and sequential investment. Design/methodology/approach - Ordered logistic regression is hired to analyze 1,260 MNEs' sequential investment in Vietnam. Findings - The empirical results of this study demonstrate the more MNEs perceive the strong level of pressure to be corrupt in the local market, the less they are likely to invest. The information acquisition capacity of MNEs has been shown to mitigate the negative effects of corruption pressures on sequential investments, while the moderating effect of political tie in host country is partially supported. Research implications or Originality - This study identified that the corruption pressures of host countries negatively affect not only MNEs that are entering, but also the ones that have already entered host countries; the corruption discourages any sequential investment for existing MNEs. By suggesting two moderating variables, this study will provide managerial implications for MNEs and managers who face corruption pressure in host countries.

  • The article reports data on, and numerical modelling of, beams exhibiting points of inflection and subjected to sequential loading. Both tests and analysis point to inadequacies in current codes of practice. An alternative design methodology, which is strongly associated with the notion that contraflexure points should be designed as "internal supports", is shown to produce superior performance even though it requires significantly less secondary reinforcement than that advocated by codes.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the diagrammatic design approaches and programmatic design approaches in contemporary architecture, so that this reveals the sequential systems of circulation in the space and liberal movement of the visitors in the buildings of those diagrammatic and programmatic architecture. Contemporary architecture generates the new forms and meanings through the dynamic visions and perspectives. Such a variation of sequential vistas and dynamic visions produce a perception of time and a potential movements of axis in the perspective. This study give the systematic body to the relations among visions, movements, sequences, forms, circulations and time. Diagrammatic and programmatic design approaches show the heterogeneous spaces and the informal architectures in contemporary architecture. Therefore, movements of various view points, differrentiations of objects in the perspectives, and multiple view frames appears in the designs of initiative architects. In conclusion, this study systemizes the concepts of time, sequential movements, and perceptions of events in contemporary architecture through the analyse of 18 architectural works of important architects in 2000s. And this shows details of the transitional movement of space and the perception of time in contemporary Architecture. The Being of the active time constructs formal transformations, spacial differentiations, accumulations of human behaviors, and movements of circulations involved with experiences of the field of senses. Therefore, Zeitlichkeit is perceived through concepts of the sequences of those spaces, forms, behaviors, and memories.
