In studies on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection of pigs, a series of investigations were conducted for isolation, biochemical properties, pathogenicity, serotyping and susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. The results could be summarized as follows: 1. A total of 14 isolates of E rhusiopathiae were made from an acute form of swine erysipelas and the incidence was high during the hot summer season. 2. The biochemical properties of the 14 isolates were identical to the reference strain of E rhusiopathiae. 3. Pathogenicity of the isolated strain(89368) were ascertained that $LD_{50}$ for mice was $1.8{\times}10 $ cfu and also typical urticarious lesions and acute septicemia for pigs were induced by intradermal and intravenous inoculation with isolates, respectively. 4. All isolates were serotyped by the agarose gel slide double-diffusion system and proved to be serotype 1. 5. In susceptibility test to antimicrobial agents, 14 isolates of E rhusiopathiae were highly sensitive to ampicillin, baytril, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, penicillin and tetracycline.
King Hyeonjong, the 18th king of the Chosun Dynasty, reigned for 15 years. During his reign, he underwent a political incident named the Controversy about the Confucian Funerary Rituals. This incident was carried out 2 times: 1 time during early days of his reign and 1 time during later days. Although it started out as a trivial dispute over the period Queen Dowager Ja-eui(stepmother of King Hyojong, Hyeonjong's father) had to wear a mourning dress, it advanced to a political incident concerning the acknowledgement of King Hyeonjong's legitimacy and political pride of the king and the vassals. Although existing researches focus on the historical context of this incident, this study focuses on the relationship between this incident and King Hyeonjong's disorders. During the First Controversy about the Confucian Funerary Rituals, King Hyeonjong was treated for various symptoms concerning hypochondria. During the Second Controversy, he suffered from septicemia as well as diabetic complications. This study is based on the texts of "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty".
Meningococcal Disease, manifesting as meningitis and septicemia, is a life-threatening bacterial infection that results in significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in childhood. Its epidemic potential and limited opportunities for clinical intervention due to its rapid course present unique public health and clinical challenges. Incidence is highest in infants and young children, with a secondary peak of risk in adolescents. Approximately 10% of cases are fatal and survivors can be left with serious and permanent sequelae including amputations, hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Transmission is only from human-to-human, by infected respiratory tract secretions or saliva and therefore crowding poses a tremendously elevated risk for disease development. Military recruits and university students are at high risk due to the high carriage rate in adolescents, their behavior patterns and close contact. Menveo$^{(R)}$ (Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics), a novel quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine directed against meningococcal serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y, has been shown to be immunogenic and well tolerated in all age groups and was recently licensed for use in Korea. Recent cases and deaths among military recruits drew public attention to their elevated risk and the Korean government has recommended vaccination of all new military recruits. Many Korean students seek to attend school, university, or language institutes in countries where routine meningococcal vaccination is required - clinicians should be aware of such requirements to ensure that students are vaccinated prior to arrival in the destination country.
Vibrio vulnificus, a normal bacterial inhabitant of estuaries, is of concern because it can be a potent human pathogen, a causing septicemia, wound infections and gastrointestinal disease in susceptible host. In this survey, total 431 samples were obtained from different sites of the Chonman coastal area during the periods from Mar. 1997 to Feb. 1998. Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from the middle of May to the begining of November of 1997 in Chonman coastal area, as the seawater temperature was at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$, respectively and was rapidly increased to above 40% from July to September. The isolation rates of V. vulnificus from sediment, seawater, raw seafoods and aquarium water were 52.1%, 49.1%, 32.5%, and 27.3%, respectively and isolation rate was highest in oyster among various collected samples. V.vulnificus was also isolated from 73.1%(38/52) of sampling sites of Chonman coastal area.
Fowl cholera is an infectious disease caused by .Pasteurella multocida, affecting domesticated and wild birds. It usually appears as a septicemia of sudden onset with high morbidity and mortality, but chronic conditions that characterized by localized infections often occur. 13wks broiler breeders were submitted to the Kyung-pook national university for diagnosis. Clinical signs included approximately 1% mortality, severe lameness, ruffled feathers and swollen and/or cloudy eyes. At necropsy, the outstanding lesions were seen swollen hock joint, which were suppurative or caseous exudates, inflammation of conjunctiva, severe pneumonia and epicarditis. The causative agent was isolated from the hock joint, liver, sinus and sternum of the chickens, and performed physiological and biochemical test. To identify the serotype of P. multocida, capsular serotyping was conducted by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In the antimicrobial susceptibility test, the isolates were resistance to the aminoglycosides. In this study, we confirmed chronic fowl cholera (FC) caused by P. multocida in broiler breeders in Korea.

Thirty-six environmental isolates of Vibrio vulnificus obtained from seawater, sediments, and raw seafoods, and 18 clinical isolates from Vibrio septicemia patients were typed by restriction endonuclease digestion profiles (REDP) of genomic DNA with SfiI. The results revealed a high-level of variation in REDPs, indicating a vast genomic diversity among V. vulnificus strains. Genetic relatedness of the strains showed similarities ranging from 10% to 100%. Different REDPs for isolates from various raw seafoods were obtained, and clustering of strains according to type of seafoods was not observed. In contrast, clinical isolates of V. vulnificus showed higher similarity to one another, and could be subdivided into one separate group. The difference in REDPs of the V. vulnificus isolates from clinical origin and from raw seafoods substantiates the previous observation that only a single type of pathogenic strain was involved in each human infection, despite the numerous genetically polymorphic strains found from implicated oysters.
The treatment of Patients with bacteraemia and septicemia requires accurate and rapid identification of the pathogen so that the physician can be guided regarding the selection of the proper antimicrobial therapy. The usual procedure is to withdraw an aliquot of the positive blood culture sample for gram staining and subculturing on the media for the growth and subsequent identification, and susceptibility determinations. It was noticed that during the process some microbiologists would sniff the effluent gases that are products of metabolism and in some cases guess the identity of the bacterium. That Prompted us to engage in systematic investigation of two gram positive and two gram negative bacteria using an electronic nose that had been proven successful in distinguishing the aroma of coffee beans from different sources. The investigation was successful in illustrating the efficacy of such a device in this clinical setting to distinguish Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. A representative set of patterns obtained with this apparatus is displayed as well. A representative set of patterns obtained with this apparatus is displayed as well. No effort was made to determine an optimal set of sensors for some specific set of bacterial metabolism gaseous products.
