Density Aware Energy Efficient Clustering Protocol for Normally Distributed Sensor Networks

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), cluster based data routing protocols have the advantages of reducing energy consumption and link maintenance cost. Unfortunately, most of clustering protocols have been designed for uniformly distributed sensor networks. However, some urgent situations do not allow thousands of sensor nodes being deployed uniformly. For example, air vehicles or balloons may take the responsibility for deploying sensor nodes hence leading a normally distributed topology. In order to improve energy efficiency in such sensor networks, in this paper, we propose a new cluster formation algorithm named DAEEC (Density Aware Energy-Efficient Clustering). In this algorithm, we define two kinds of clusters: Low Density (LD) clusters and High Density (HD) clusters. They are determined by the number of nodes participated in one cluster. During the data routing period, the HD clusters help the neighbor LD clusters to forward the sensed data to the central base station. Thus, DAEEC can distribute the energy dissipation evenly among all sensor nodes by considering the deployment density to improve network lifetime and average energy savings. Moreover, because the HD clusters are densely deployed they can work in a manner of our former algorithm EEVAR (Energy Efficient Variable Area Routing Protocol) to save energy. According to the performance analysis result, DAEEC outperforms the conventional data routing schemes in terms of energy consumption and network lifetime.

Highly Sensitive Partial Discharge Sensor with Remote Monitoring Capabilities (원격감시 기능을 갖는 고감도 부분방전센서)

  • Remote monitoring partial discharge sensor, equipping with hybrid filter combining optical and electrical noise reduction capabilities and with signal integrating function to calculate total arc energy, was investigated. Hybrid filter showed insensitivity to fluorescent and incandescent lamps under simulated distribution panel condition. Signal integrating function showed selective detection capability corresponding to different arc energy levels, while convention arc sensor had difficulty to discriminate arc energy level due to bursty arc waveform and peak level detection characteristics. The sensor showed possibility for application to remote monitoring partial discharge sensor, since it detected arc energy level corresponding to normal open and close discharge in low voltage 100A MCCB at 2m distance.

A Reconfiguration Method for Preserving Network Bandwidth and Nodes Energy of Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and even in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, the reconfiguration of sensor variables is an important problem when the role of a system (or application) program's sensor nodes needs to be adjusted in a particular situation. For example, the outdoor temperature in a volcanic zone, which is usually updated in a system every 10 s, should be updated every 1 s during an emergency situation. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach based on changing only a set of sensor variables in a part of a program, rather than modifying the entire program, in order to reduce both network congestion and the sensor nodes' battery consumption. To validate our approach, we demonstrate an implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype system and also present results of comparative studies showing the performance and effectiveness of our proposed method.

Estimation of the Sensor Location and the Step for Personal Navigation System (개인 항법 시스템을 위한 센서 위치와 보폭 추정 알고리즘)

  • This paper presents the sensor location and step estimation algorithm for personal navigation system (PNS). PNS has the disadvantage in that the position of the sensor must be fixed on a human body. Three-axis acceleration sensor is used to solve the disadvantage and to consider the real situation. We simplify the measurement data by using the band pass filter, witch It has the advantage in the detection of characteristic point. Through the detected characteristic points, it is possible to setup the parameter for the pattern detection. Depending on the sensor location, the parameters have the different type of noise covariance. Particularly, when the position of the sensor is changed, the impulse noise shows up. Considering the noise, we apply the recursive least square algorithm using the variable forgetting factors, which can classify the sensor location based on the estimated parameters. We performed the experiment for the verification of the proposed algorithm in the various environments. Through the experimental results, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.

A Study on Pseudo-random Number Generator with Fixed Length Tap unrelated to the variable sensing nodes for IoT Environments (IoT 환경에서 가변 센싱 노드들에 무관한 고정 길이 탭을 가지는 의사 난수 발생기에 관한 연구)

  • As the IoT world including WSNs develops, the number of sensor systems that sense information according to the environment based on the principle of IoT is increasing. In order to perform security for each sensor system in such a complicated environment, the security modules must be varied. These problems make hardware/software implementation difficult when considering the system efficiency and hacking/cracking. Therefore, to solve this problem, this paper proposes a pseudorandom number generator (FLT: Pseudo-random Number Generator with Fixed Length Tap unrelated to the variable sensing nodes) with a fixed-length tap that generates a pseudorandom number with a constant period, irrespective of the number of sensing nodes, and has the purpose of detecting anomalies. The proposed FLT-LFSR architecture allows the security level and overall data formatting to be kept constant for hardware/software implementations in an IoT environment. Therefore, the proposed FLT-LFSR architecture emphasizes the scalability of the network, regardless of the ease of implementation of the sensor system and the number of sensing nodes.

Design of Variable Timeslot for Hybrid MAC (하이브리드 MAC을 위한 가변 타임슬롯 설계)

  • Hybrid media access control (MAC) is used in internet of things (IoT) network, because of communication feature concern with data capacity and communication interval between gateway and sensor nodes and the cost efficiency. Hybrid MAC consists of TDMA and CSMA generally. The distance between gateway and sensor node is openly changed in marine IoT network. Therefore, it is needed to control the period of timeslot of hybrid MAC used in marine IoT network. In this paper, the design rule of TDMA timeslot with the variable period depending on communication distance was proposed. It was confirmed from the analysis that 72 times communication between gateway and sensor nodes is possible in LoRa network by using the proposed TDMA variable timeslot scheme.

  • This paper presents a recoil and counter recoil(R&CR) motion measurement method using linear variable differential transformers(LVDT). The output of a LVDT is obtained from the differential voltage of the 2nd transformers. As a sensor core is attached at the motion body, the output is directly proportional to the core motion. Displacement, velocity and acceleration are measure from the core length. With a comparison between the measurement result and the known value which is obtained by the precision steel tape, the accuracy and the usefulness of the proposed scheme is validated.

  • An algorithm of fuzzy variable structrue control is proposed to design a closed loop fuel-injection system for the emission control of automotive gasoline engines. Fuzzy control is combined with sliding control at the switching boundary layer to improve the chattering of the stoichiometric air to fuel ratio. Multi-staged fuzzy rules are introduced to improve the adaptiveness of control system for the various operating conditions of engines, and a simplified technique of fuzzy inference is also adopted to improve the computational efficiency based on nonfuzzy micro-processors. The proposed method provides an effective way of engine controller design due to its hybrid structure satisfying the requirements of robustness and stability. The great potential of the fuzzy variable structure control is shown through a hardware-testing with an Intel 80C186 processor for controller and a typical engine-only model on an AD-100 computer.

  • Measurement of beam deflection is a common procedure to determine proper behavior of the structure. Either LVDT (Linear Variable Displacement Transformer) or strain gauge is usually used in experiments. A newly developed coordinate reading measurement system can be also applied for the deflection measurements. In this study, an experimental measurement was made on a laboratory size beam specimen to examine the possibility of the use of such coordinate measurement system. Results have shown the possibility of utilizing the new system for beam deflection measurement.

  • An active stick which has the variable force-feel characteristics is developed. A combined position and force control strategy is mechanized using a 2-axis built-in force sensor and LVDT. The 2-axis force sensor which measures the stick force felt by the operator is developed by using strain gages and appropriate instrumental amplifiers. A mathematical model of the active stick dynamics is derived, and compared with the experimental results.
