Modified parity space averaging approaches for online cross-calibration of redundant sensors in nuclear reactors

  • To maintain safety and reliability of reactors, redundant sensors are usually used to measure critical variables and estimate their averaged time-dependency. Nonhealthy sensors can badly influence the estimation result of the process variable. Since online condition monitoring was introduced, the online cross-calibration method has been widely used to detect any anomaly of sensor readings among the redundant group. The cross-calibration method has four main averaging techniques: simple averaging, band averaging, weighted averaging, and parity space averaging (PSA). PSA is used to weigh redundant signals based on their error bounds and their band consistency. Using the consistency weighting factor (C), PSA assigns more weight to consistent signals that have shared bands, based on how many bands they share, and gives inconsistent signals of very low weight. In this article, three approaches are introduced for improving the PSA technique: the first is to add another consistency factor, so called trend consistency (TC), to include a consideration of the preserving of any characteristic edge that reflects the behavior of equipment/component measured by the process parameter; the second approach proposes replacing the error bound/accuracy based weighting factor ($W^a$) with a weighting factor based on the Euclidean distance ($W^d$), and the third approach proposes applying $W^d$, TC, and C, all together. Cold neutron source data sets of four redundant hydrogen pressure transmitters from a research reactor were used to perform the validation and verification. Results showed that the second and third modified approaches lead to reasonable improvement of the PSA technique. All approaches implemented in this study were similar in that they have the capability to (1) identify and isolate a drifted sensor that should undergo calibration, (2) identify a faulty sensor/s due to long and continuous missing data range, and (3) identify a healthy sensor.

  • In 1991, Prof. Toshio Masuda of Kyoto University for the first time synthesized a representative of diphenylacetylene polymer derivatives, poly[1-phenyl-2-(p-trimethylsilyl)phenylacetylene] [PTMSDPA]. This polymer is highly soluble nevertheless a ultra-high molecular weight (Mw) of > $1.0{\times}10^6$ which showed excellent chemical, physical, mechanical properties [1]. As one of the most interesting features of PTMSDPA, Prof. Katsumi Yoshino of Osaka Univ. reported that this polymer emits an intense fluorescence (FL) in a visible region because of the effective exciton confinement within the resonant structure between the polyene pi-conjugated chain and side phenyl full-aromatic bulky groups [2]. Very recently, Prof. Ben-Zhong Tang of Hong-Kong Institute of Science and Technology clarified the idea that the FL emission of disubstituted acetylene polymer derivatives originates from intramolecular excimer due to the face-to-face stacking of the side phenyl groups [3]. Thus, to know what influence to intramolecular excimer emission in the film as well as to further understand how the intramolecular excimer forms in the film became more crucial in order to further precisely design the optimized molecular structure for highly emissive, substituted acetylene polymers in the solid state. In recent studies, we have focused our interests on the origin of the FL emission in order to expand our knowledge to developments of novel sensor applications. It was found that the intramolecular phenyl-pheyl stack structure of PTMSDPA in film was variable in response to various external chemical stimuli. Using PTMSDPA and its derivatives, we have developed various potential applications such as latent fingerprint identification, viscosity sensor, chemical-responsive actuator, gum-like soft conjugated polymer, and bioimaging. Fiber-Optic Sensor Using Bending-Sensitive Fiber (굽힘에 민감한 광섬유를 이용한 광섬유 센서)

  • Fiber-optic sensor (FOS) using bending-sensitive fiber (BSF which detects physical variables according to the variation of fiber-bending is proposed. BSF is already used in variable optical attenuator. Three-dimensional finite difference beam propagation method (3D FD-BPM) is used to investigate the bending loss of BSF. Then, the results of bending experiment with FOS consisting of BSF is compared to numerical results of 3D FD-BPM. In particular, the optical power of fabricated FOS with BSF varies from -ldB to -2OdB when pressure given to the upper side of FOS changes from 0 MPa to 0.005 MPa, while the FOS consists of SMF shows no change of optical power at the same condition.

  • Safety of large scale cable in bridge is very important because it may cause the unwanted catastrophic failure. Although the proof load were considered at the design stage, its soundness must be monitored continuously because the cable may be broken out without warning by the variable external load. The cable tension of in-use structures has been mainly measured by the resonance method and its use has been limited because of relatively large measurement uncertainty. Recently a new magnetic method was developed and its reliability is known to be good for evaluating the cable tension. In this study a system which can deliver the calibrated load to the cable was developed and the measurement reliability of developed magnetic sensor according to the change of external load was analyzed quantitatively. The effect of magnetization frequency, bias magnetic field, and temperature on the sensor output was also evaluated.

Soft sensor design based on PLS with hybrid inner model (내적 조합 모델 PLS를 이용한 소프트 센서 설계)

  • It takes quite a long time for an analyzer, such as gas chromatography, to measure a bulk property of a system, which prevents on-line measurements. Also, the cost of installation and maintenance is very high. Consequently, some other means is needed for on-line measurements of properties and the development of soft sensors based on process variables like temperature and pressure is of great interest. In the field of gas industry, the development of a soft sensor which makes indirect on-line measurements of gas compositions and flow rate, is in progress. In this paper, we proposed a hybrid inner model PLS which improved the prediction performance by taking into account the data structure, as an empirical modeling algorithm. When applied to a design of a soft sensor of a distillation tower, the hybrid inner model PLS showed better prediction performance than other methods.

Data Congestion Control Using Drones in Clustered Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network (클러스터된 이기종 무선 센서 네트워크에서의 드론을 이용한 데이터 혼잡 제어)

  • The clustered heterogeneous wireless sensor network is comprised of sensor nodes and cluster heads, which are hierarchically organized for different objectives. In the network, we should especially take care of managing node resources to enhance network performance based on memory and battery capacity constraints. For instances, if some interesting events occur frequently in the vicinity of particular sensor nodes, those nodes might receive massive amounts of data. Data congestion can happen due to a memory bottleneck or link disconnection at cluster heads because the remaining memory space is filled with those data. In this paper, we utilize drones as mobile sinks to resolve data congestion and model the network, sensor nodes, and cluster heads. We also design a cost function and a congestion indicator to calculate the degree of congestion. Then we propose a data congestion map index and a data congestion mapping scheme to deploy drones at optimal points. Using control variable, we explore the relationship between the degree of congestion and the number of drones to be deployed, as well as the number of drones that must be below a certain degree of congestion and within communication range. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm outperforms previous work by a minimum of 20% in terms of memory overflow.

Active control of a flexible structure with time delay

  • Time delay exists inevitably in active control, which may not only degrade the system performance but also render instability to the dynamic system. In this paper, a novel active controller is developed to solve the time delay problem in flexible structures. By using the independent modal space control method, the differential equation of the controlled mode with time delay is obtained from the time-delay system dynamics. Then it is discretized and changed into a first-order difference equation without any explicit time delay by augmenting the state variables. The modal controller is derived based on the augmented system using the discrete variable structure control method. The switching surface is determined by minimizing a discrete quadratic performance index. The modal coordinate is extracted from sensor measurements and the actuator control force is converted from the modal one. Since the time delay is explicitly included throughout the entire controller design without any approximation, the system performance and stability are guaranteed. Numerical simulations show that the proposed controller is feasible and effective in active vibration control of dynamic systems with time delay. If the time delay is not explicitly included in the controller design, instability may occur.

  • Dashboard camera is important system to store the variable data that not only video but also non-visual information that state of vehicle such as accelerometer, speed, direction. Non-visual information include variable data that can't visualization, so it used important evidence to figure out the situation in accident. It could be missed to non-visual information what can be prove the case in the just digital video forensic procedure. In this paper, We proposal the digital forensic analysis procedure for dashboard camera to all data in dashboard camera extract and analysis data for investigating traffic accident case. And I analyze to some products in with this digital forensic analysis procedure.

  • Switched reluctance motor(SRM) has the advantages of simple structure, low rotor inertia and high efficiency. However, position sensor is essential in SRM in order to synchronize the phase excitation to the rotor Position. The Position sensors increase the cost of drive system and tend to reduce system reliability. This paper investigates the speed control of sensorless SRM in which the Phase current and change rate are utilized in position decision, and the period of dwell angle is variable for speed control. The proposed system consists of Position decision circuit, speed controller, digital logic commutator, switching angle controller and inverter The performances in the proposed system are verified through the experiment.

Determination of Variable Rate Fertilizing Amount in Small Size Fields Using Geographic Information System

  • The feasibility of precision farming for small sized fields was studied by determining fertilizing amount of nitrogenous and calcareous to a cite specific region. A detailed soil survey at three experimental fields of 672㎡, 300㎡ and 140㎡ revealed a considerable spatial variation of the pH and organic matter(OM) levels. Soil organic matter was measured using Walkley-Black method and soil pH was measured with a pH sensor. Soil sample was obtained by Grid Node Sampling Method. The soil sampling depth was 10 - 20 cm from the soil surface. To display soil nutrient variation, a soil map was made using Geographic Information System (GIS) software. In soil mapping, soil data between nodes was interpolated using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method. The variation was about 1 - 1.8 in pH value and 1.4 -7 % in OM content. Fertilizing Amount of nitrogenous and calcareous was determined by the fertilizing equation which was proposed by National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.(NIAST). The variation of fertilizing amount was about 3 - 11 kg/10a in nitrogenous and 70 - 140 kg/10a in calcareous. The results showed a feasibility of precision fertilizing for small size fields.
