  • The geometry PIG provides pipeline operators with continuous measurement of pipe centerline coordinates, bend radius, displacement, and bending strain in a single pass through the pipeline. This study introduces the developed geometry PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) which is used for geometry surveys. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) comprises angle rate gyros and linear accelerometers. The system measures the precise path of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline. This system is also used to produce a detailed map of the lire, measure curvature. Odometers measure the PIG´s distance moved along the line and instantaneous speed during the PIG run. Caliper sensors measure pipeline ...

  • In this paper, we deal with a calibration method for low cost motion capture sensor using PSD (Position Sensitive Detection). The PSD sensor is employed to measure the direction of incident light from moving markers attached to motion body. To calibrate the PSD optical module, a conventional camera calibration algorithm introduced by Tsai. The 3-dimensional positions of the markers are measured by using stereo camera geometry. From the experimental results, the low cost motion capture sensor can be used in a real time system.

  • This paper presents a unique pressure sensor design for environmental applications. The design uses a new geometry for a multi bossed beam-membrane structure with a SOI (silicon-on-insulator) substrate and a mechanical transducer. The Intellisuite MEMS CAD design tool was used to build and analyze the structure with FEM (finite element modeling). The working principle of the multi bossed beam structure is explained. FEM calculations show that a sensing diaphragm with Mises stress can provide superior linear response compared to a stress-free diaphragm. These simulation results are validated by comparing the estimated deflection response. The results show that, the sensitivity is enhanced by using both the novel geometry and the SOI substrate.

  • A finite element formulation of vibration control of a laminated plate with piezoelectric sensor/ actuators is presented. Classical lamination theory with the induced strain actuation and Hamilton's principle are used to formulate the equations of motion of the system. The total charge developed on the sensor layer is calculated from the direct piezoelectric equation. The equations of motion and the total charge are discretized with 4 node, 12 degrees of freedom quadrilateral plate bending elements with one electrical degree of freedom. The mass and stiffness of the piezoelectric layer are introduced by treating them as another layer in laminated plate. Piezoelectric sensor/actuators are distributed, but discrete due to the geometry of electrodes. By defining an i.d. number of electrode for each element, modelling of electrodes with variable geometry can be achieved. The static response of a piezoelectric bimorph beam to electrical loading and sensor voltage to given displacement are calculated. For a laminated plate under the negative velocity feedback control, the direct time response by the Newmark-.betha. method and damped frequencies and modal damping ratios by modal state space analysis are derived.

  • Injection technology is one of the important technologies in a diesel engine. Many studies have done on the injection system. In this study, the fuel chamber geometry, the orifice ratio and the needle lift of the injection valve of a diesel engine for generating electricity are varied and tested. The injection pressure, duration and spray shapes are produced with pressure transducer, needle lift sensor and highspeed camera. The result shows that the nozzle hole size has influence on the rail pressure and injection duration sensuously.

  • This paper presents investigation of an arc force sensor for a robotic welding control system. Arc force sensor is employed in this research to monitor the bead geometry of the arc welding process. Arc force sensor mounted at the end of the robot wrist was employed to measure the arc force applied to the weld. Experimental configuration for measurement of arc force was used to quantify the changes in the arc force distributions of the plate being welded. A relationship between the bead dimension and the arc force distributions was established. The sensor information was used to establish a relationship between welding current and arc force. Arc force sensor have shown to be one of the most sophisticated technique to monitor perturbations that occurred during robotic arc welding process.

  • Recently, there has been a rapid development in computer technology, which has in turn led to develop the automated welding system using Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, the automated welding system has not been achieved duo to difficulties of the control and sensor technologies. In this paper, the classification of the optimized bead geometry such as bead width, height penetration and bead area in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding with fuzzy logic is presented. The fuzzy C-Means algorithm (FCM), which is best known an unsupervised fuzzy clustering algorithm is employed here to analysis the specimen of the bead geometry. Then the quality of the GMA welding can be classified by this fuzzy clustering technique and the choice for obtaining the optimal bead geometry can also be determined.

  • This paper introduces the development of the caliper system for a geometry PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge). The objective of the caliper system is to detect and measure dents, wrinkles, and ovalities affect the pipe structural integrity. The developed caliper system consists of a finger arm, an anisotropic permanent magnet, a back yoke, pins, pinholes and a linear hall effect sensor. The angle displacement of the finger arm is measured by the change of the magnetic field in sensing module. Therefore the sensitivity of the caliper system mainly depends on the magnitude of the magnetic field inside the sensing module. In this research, the ring shaped anisotropic permanent magnet and linear hall effect sensors were used to produce and measure the magnetic field. The structure of the permanent magnet, the back yoke and pinhole positions were optimized that the magnitude of the magnetic field range between a high of 0.1020 Tesla and a low of zero by using three dimensional nonlinear finite element methods. A simulator was fabricated to prove the effectiveness of the developed caliper system and the computational scheme using the finite element method. The experimental results show that the developed caliper system is quite efficient for the geometry PIG with good performance.

  • Sensor localization is one of the fundamental problems in wireless sensor networks. Previous localization algorithms can be classified into two categories, the GGB (Global Geometry-Based) approaches and the LGB (Local Geometry-Based). In the GGB approaches, there are a fixed set of reference nodes of which the coordinates are pre-determined. Other nodes determine their positions based on the distances from the fixed reference nodes. In the LGB approaches, meanwhile, the reference node set is not fixed, but grows up dynamically. Most GGB algorithms assume that the nodes are deployed in a convex shape area. They fail if either nodes are in a concave shape area or there are obstacles that block the communications between nodes. Meanwhile, the LGB approach is vulnerable to the errors in the distance estimations. In this paper, we propose new localization algorithms to cope with those two limits. The key technique employed in our algorithms is to determine, in a fully distributed fashion, if a node is in the line-of-sight from another. Based on the technique, we present two localization algorithms, one for anchor-based, another for anchor-free localization, and compare them with the previous algorithms.

  • The optical fiber is known for the proper sensor which can accomplish the structural health monitoring, Fiber Bragg Grating sensors are being studied more than any other fiber optic sensors due to good multiplexing capabilities. But because the signal stability of FBG sensors can be influenced by the strain gradient, it needs to analyze signal of FBG sensors. Particularly acoording to strain gradient induced by structural geometry or cracks, the spectrum peak of the FBG sensor signal can be split easily. In this paper, the spectrum analysis of the FBG sensor signal was performed and the region of embedment of FBG sensors was determined in $H_2$ pressure vessel by numerical method.
