There have been continuous efforts to automate welding processes. This automation process could be said to fall into two categories, weld seam tracking and weld quality evaluation. Recently, the attempts to achieve these two functions simultaneously are on the increase. For the study presented in this paper, a vision sensor is made, and using this, the 3 dimensional geometry of the bead is measured in real time. For the application in welding, which is the characteristic of nonlinear process, a fuzzy controller is designed. And with this, an adaptive control system is proposed which acquires the bead height and the coordinates of the point on the bead along the horizontal fillet joint, performs seam tracking with those data, and also at the same time, controls the bead geometry to a uniform shape. A communication system, which enables the communication with the industrial robot, is designed to control the bead geometry and to track the weld seam. Experiments are made with varied offset angles from the pre-taught weld path, and they showed the adaptive system works favorable results.

Recently, the development of sensor devices has accelerated researches on advanced technologies like Wireless Sensor Networks. Moreover, spatial sensors using GPS lead to the era of the Ubiquitous Computing Environment which generally uses spatial information and non-spatial information together. In this new era, a real-time processing system for spatial sensor data is essential. In this reason, new data processing systems called DSMS(Data Stream Management System) are being developed by many researchers. However, since most of them do not support geometry types and spatial functions to process spatial sensor data, they are not suitable for the Ubiquitous Computing Environment. For these reasons, in this paper, we designed and implemented a spatial DSMS by extending STREAM which stands for STanford stREam datA Manager, to solve these problems. We added geometry types and spatial functions to STREAM in order to process spatial sensor data efficiently. In addition, we implemented a Spatial Object Manager to manage shared spatial objects within the system. Especially, we implemented the Simple Features Specification for SQL of OGC for interoperability and applied algorithms in GEOS to our system.

Vision-based lane sensing systems require accurate and robust sensing performance in lane detection. Besides, there exists trade-off between the computational burden and processor cost, which should be considered for implementing the systems in passenger cars. In this paper, a stereo vision-based lane detection system is developed with considering sensor configuration aspects. An inverse perspective mapping method is formulated based on the relative correspondence between the left and right cameras so that the 3-dimensional road geometry can be reconstructed in a robust manner. A new monitoring model for estimating the road geometry parameters is constructed to reduce the number of the measured signals. The selection of the sensor configuration and specifications is investigated by utilizing the characteristics of standard highways. Based on the sensor configurations, it is shown that appropriate sensing region on the camera image coordinate can be determined. The proposed system is implemented on a passenger car and verified experimentally.
Data composite methods have been typically applied to satellite-based vegetation index(VI) data to continuously acquire vegetation greenness over the land surface. Data composites are useful for construction of long-term archives of vegetation indices by minimizing missing data or contamination from noise. In addition, if multi-sensor vegetation indices that are acquired during the same composite periods are used interchangeably, data stability and continuity may be significantly enhanced. This study evaluated the influences of sensor geometry on MODIS vegetation indices and investigated data compatibility of two difference vegetation indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI), for potential improvement of long-term data construction. Relationships between NDVI and EVI turned out statistically significant with variations among vegetation covers. Due to their curvilinear relationships, NDVI became saturated and leveled off as EVI reached high ranges. Correlation coefficients between Terra- and Aqua-based vegetation indices ranged from 0.747 to 0.963 for EVI, and from 0.641 to 0.880 for NDVI, showing better compatibility for EVI compared to NDVI. In-depth analyses of VI outliers that deviated from regression equations constructed from the two different sensors remain as a future study to improve their compatibility.

One of the significant subject in the automatic arc welding is to establish control system of the welding parameters for controlling bead geometry as a criterion to evaluate the quality of arc welding. This paper proposes an inference algorithm for bead geometry in CMA Welding using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm. The characteristic welding parameters are measured by the circuit composed of hall sensor, voltage divider tachometer, etc. and then the bead geometry of each weld pool is calculated and detected by an image processing with CCD camera and a measuring with microscope. The relationships between the characteristic welding parameters and the bead geometry have been arranged empirically. From the result of experiments, membership functions and fuzzy rules are tuned and determined by the learning of neural network, and then the relationship between actual bead geometry and inferred bead geometry are concluded by fuzzy logic controller. In the applied inference system of bead geometry using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm, the inference error percent is within -5%∼+4% in case of bead width, -10%∼+10% in bead height, -5%∼+6% in bead area, -10%∼+10% in penetration. Use of the Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm allows the CMA Welding system to evaluate the quality in bead geometry in real time as the welding parameters change.
This paper describes the development and evaluation of an innovative TDR distributed moisture sensor. This sensor features advantages of being responsive to the spatial variations of the soil moisture content. The geometry design of the sensor makes it rugged for field installation. Good linear calibration is obtained between the sensor measured dielectric constant and soil physical properties. Simulations by the finite element method (FEM) are conducted to assist the design of this sensor and to determine the effective sampling range. Compared with conventional types of moisture sensor, which only makes point measurement, this sensor possesses distributed moisture sensing capability. This new sensor is not only easy to install, but also measures moisture distribution with much lower cost. This new sensor holds promise to significantly improve the current field instruments. It will be a useful tool to help study the influence of a variety of moisture-related phenomena on infrastructure performance.

Pose estimation of the sensor is important issue in many applications such as robotics, navigation, tracking, and Augmented Reality. This paper proposes visual-inertial integration system appropriate for dynamically moving condition of the sensor. The orientation estimated from Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor is used to calculate the essential matrix based on the intrinsic parameters of the camera. Using the epipolar geometry, the outliers of the feature point matching are eliminated in the image sequences. The pose of the sensor can be obtained from the feature point matching. The use of IMU sensor can help initially eliminate erroneous point matches in the image of dynamic scene. After the outliers are removed from the feature points, these selected feature points matching relations are used to calculate the precise fundamental matrix. Finally, with the feature point matching relation, the pose of the sensor is estimated. The proposed procedure was implemented and tested, comparing with the existing methods. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the technique proposed in this paper.
The Minimum-Norm Least-Square(MNLS) approach based on lead field theory is an useful method to find an unique inverse solution for the measured magnetic field. The lead field depends on head geometry and location of sources and sensors. So, optimization of sensor array location is important issue for MNLS estimation. In this paper, we present an investigation for the optimization of sensor array location in computer simulation.
A sensor network is composed of a large number of sensor nodes that are densely deployed in a field. Each sensor performs a sensing task for detection specific events. After detecting this event, location information of the sensor node is very important. Range-based scheme of the proposed approaches typically achieve high accuracy on either node-to-node distances or angles, but this scheme have a drawback because all sensor nodes have the special hardware. On the other hand, range-free scheme provides economic advantage because of no needed hardware even if that leads to coarse positioning accuracy. In this paper, we propose a range-free localization algorithm without range information in wireless sensor networks. This is a range-free approach and uses a small number of anchor nodes and known sensor nodes. This paper develops a localization mechanism using the geometry conjecture (perpendicular bisector of a chord). The conjecture states that a perpendicular bisector of a chord passes through the center of the circle.

This paper introduces the developed geometry PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge), one of several ILI (In-Line Inspection) tools, which provide a full picture of the pipeline from only single pass, and has compact size of the electronic device with not only low power consumption but also rapid response of sensors such as calipers, IMU and odometer. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. Caliper sensors measure the pipeline internal diameter, ovality and dent size and shape with high accuracy. The IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) measures the precise trajectory of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline. The IMU also provide three-dimensional coordination in space from measurement of inertial acceleration and angular rate. Three odometers mounted on the PIG body provide the distance moved along the line and instantaneous velocity during the PIG run. The datum measured by the sensor systems are stored in on-board solid state memory and magnetic tape devices. There is an electromagnetic transmitter at the back end of the tool, the transmitter enables the inspection operators to keep tracking the tool while it travels through the pipeline. An experiment was fulfilled in pull-rig facility and was adopted from Incheon LT (LNG Terminal) to Namdong GS (Governor Station) line, 13 km length.
