In this paper, the properties of strain sensors made of spin-capable multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized and their sensing mechanisms analyzed. The key contribution of this paper is a new fabrication technique that introduces a simpler transfer method compared to spin-coating or dispersion CNT. Resistance of the MWCNT sheet strain sensor increased linearly with higher strain. To investigate the effect of CNT concentration on sensitivity, two strain sensors with different layer numbers of MWCNT sheets (one and three layers) were fabricated. According to the results, the sensor with a three-layer sheet showed higher sensitivity than that with one layer. In addition, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of environmental factors, temperature, and gas on sensor sensitivity. An increase in temperature resulted in a reduction in sensor sensitivity. It was also observed that ambient gas influenced the properties of the MWCNT sheet due to charge transfer. Experimental results showed that there was a linear change in resistance in response to strain, and the resistance of the sensor fully recovered to its unstressed state and exhibited stable electromechanical properties.

The optical disc drive has used a high NA objective lens and a shorter wavelength laser diode for high recording density. But high NA and shorter wavelength cause several margins to become short. Focusing and tracking servo has to be more accurate and active tilt compensation mechanism is also needed for coma aberration compensation. In this paper, we proposed 3-axis moving magnet type actuator. For 3-DOF motion, moving coil actuator has to be equipped with 6 wires for supplying 3 independent signals. However, moving magnet type actuator doesn't need to change the configuration of wires because coils are in stator. So, we added a tilt mechanism to the 2-axis moving magnet actuator which is designed in previous research. Addition of the tilt mechanism cuts down the focus sensitivity. So, maximization the tilting sensitivity and securing the focusing sensitivity are objectivities of this research. DOE (design of experiments) procedures of electromagnetic circuit are performed for parameter study and the optimization is also performed to maximize the tilt sensitivity. And then the final design is suggested and its performance is verified by FE simulation.
Constitutive equations in a nuclear reactor safety analysis code are mostly empirical correlations developed from experiments, which always accompany uncertainties. The accuracy of the code can be improved by modifying the constitutive equations fitting wider range of data with less uncertainty. Thus, the sensitivity of the code with respect to the constitutive equations is evaluated quantitatively in the paper to understand the room for improvement of the code. A new methodology is proposed which first starts by dividing the thermal hydraulic conditions into multiple sub-regimes using self-organizing map (SOM) clustering method. The sensitivity analysis is then conducted by multiplying an arbitrary set of coefficients to the constitutive equations for each sub-divided thermal-hydraulic regime with SOM to observe how the code accuracy varies. The randomly chosen multiplier coefficient represents the uncertainty of the constitutive equations. Furthermore, the set with the smallest error with the selected experimental data can be obtained and can provide insight which direction should the constitutive equations be modified to improve the code accuracy. The newly proposed method is applied to a steady-state experiment and a transient experiment to illustrate how the method can provide insight to the code developer.

Optimization of chassis frame is performed according to the minimization of eleven responses representing one total frame weight, three natural frequencies and seven strength limits of chassis frame that are analyzed by using each response surface model from D-optimal design of experiments. After each response surface model is constructed form D-optimal design and random orthogonal array, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully carried out by using this approximated regression model and the optimal solutions are obtained by using a nonlinear programming method. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of chassis frame. The eleven-polynomial response surface models of the thirteen frame members (design factors) are constructed by using D-optimal Design and the multi-disciplinary design optimization is also performed by applying dual response analysis.

Optimization of the elastic joint of train is performed according to the minimization of ten responses which represent driving safety and ride comfort of train and analyzed by using the each response se surface model from stochastic design of experiments. After the each response surface model is constructed, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully performed by 2nd order approximated regression model as described in this paper. We can get the optimal solutions using by nonlinear programming method such as simplex or interval optimization algorithms. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of the elastic joint of train. the ten 2nd order polynomial response surface models of the three translational stiffness of the elastic joint (design factors) are constructed by using CCD(Central Composite Design) and the multi-objective optimization is also performed by applying min-max and distance minimization techniques of relative target deviation.
Sensitivity experiments of WRF model using different planetary boundary layer (PBL) and land surface model (LSM) parameterizations are evaluated for prediction of wind fields within the surface layer. The experiments were performed with three PBL schemes (YSU, Pleim, MYJ) in combination with three land surface models (Noah, RUC, Pleim). The WRF model was conducted on a nested grid from 27-km to 1-km horizontal resolution. The simulations validated wind speed and direction at 10 m and 80 m above ground level at a 1-km spatial resolution over the South Korea. Statistical verification results indicate that Pleim and YSU PBL schemes are in good agreement with observations at 10 m above ground level, while the MYJ scheme produced predictions similar to the observed wind speed at 80 m above ground level. LSM comparisons indicate that the RUC model performs best in predicting 10-m and 80-m wind speed. It is found that MYJ (PBL) - RUC (LSM) simulations yielded the best results for wind field in the surface layer. The choice of PBL and LSM parameterization will contribute to more accurate wind predictions for air quality studies and wind power using WRF.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to propose contrast metric which is based on the human visual perception and thus it can be used to improve the quality of digital images in many applications. Methods: Previous literatures are surveyed, and then the proposed method is modeled based on Human Visual System(HVS) such as multiscale property of the contrast sensitivity function (CSF), contrast constancy property (suprathreshold), color channel property. Furthermore, experiments using digital images are shown to prove the effectiveness of the method. Results: The results of this study are as follows; regarding the proposed contrast measure of complex images, it was found by experiments that HVS follows relatively well compared to the previous contrast measurement. Conclusion: This study shows the effectiveness on how to measure the contrast of complex images which follows human perception better than other methods.

In the present experiments, isolated Vibrio species from marine and clinical specimens from July, 1985 to October, 1986, had the results as follows: 1. The 55 strains of Vibrio were isolated and identified; Vibrio parahaemolyticus was 35 strains, Vibrio vulnificus was 10 strains, Vibrio alginolyticus was 10 strains. 2. In the K-serotyping of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, fourteen serotypes identified but three were not strains typable by the availble K-antisera. 3. In the Kanagawa phenomenon experiment of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, it proved positive reaction, 14 of 15 strains(93%) isolated from the patient and 13 of 20 strains(65%) isolated from the nature. 4. In twelve antibiotic resistance experiments, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus showed 100% resistance on ampicilline, but Vibrio vulnificus showed 100% sensitivity. But all of them proved 100% sensitivity on chloramphenicol, tetracycline, nalidixic acid. 5. In the antibiotic resistance patterns, Vibrio parahaemolyticus proved that 15 strains(43%) resisted on 4 antibiotics and 5 strains(14%) resisted on 7 antibiotisc and. Vibrio vulnificus proved that 1 strain(10%) resisted on 2 antibiotics and 6 strains(60%) without resistance, Vibrio alginolyticus proved that 7 strains(70%) resisted on 3 antibiotics and 2 strains(20%) resisted on 8 antibiotics.
Electromagnetic forming (EMF) simulations consider 3-dimensionally coupled electromagnetic-mechanical phenomenon using LS-DYNA, therefore the calculation cost is normally expensive. In this study, a sensitivity analysis in regard to the simulation variables affecting the calculation time was carried out. The EMF experiments were conducted to form an elliptically protruding shape on a high-strength steel sheet, and it was predicted using LS-DYNA simulation. In this particular EMF simulation case, the effect of several simulation variables, viz., element size, contact condition, EM-time step interval, and re-calculation number of the EM matrices, on the shape of elliptical protrusion and the total calculation time was analyzed. As a result, reasonable values of the simulation variables between the simulation precision and calculation time were proposed, and the EMF experiments with respect to the charging voltages were successfully predicted.
With use of (G)MR head, thermal asperity (TA) has been a big concern in drive industry. In this study, we investigated several factors of heads and disks which affects the TA sensitivity of the drive. TA experiments were conducted by introducing the particles on the drives using a particle injection chamber. It was found that the slider ABS shape can help to reduce TA or contamination in the head/media interface. However, TA sensitivity of the drive mainly depend on the intrinsic property of (G)MR sensor. GMR head is much less sensitive to TA compared with MR head. However, in case that the same bias current was applied for both of MR and GMR head, TA sensitivity of GMR head became almost identical to that of MR head. Therefore it was found that the bias current is a dominant factor in determining TA sensitivity of the head. TA sensitivity of different types of disks was also studied. The scratch resistance of the carbon overcoat layer is the one of the main factors which influence TA rejection capability of the disks.
