Smart sensors densely distributed over structures can use their computational and wireless communication capabilities to provide rich information for structural health monitoring (SHM). Though smart sensor technology has seen substantial advances during recent years, implementation of smart sensors on full-scale structures has been limited. Hardware resources available on smart sensors restrict data acquisition capabilities; intrinsic to these wireless systems are packet loss, data synchronization errors, and relatively slow communication speeds. This paper addresses these issues under the hardware limitation by developing corresponding middleware services. The reliable communication service requires only a few acknowledgement packets to compensate for packet loss. The synchronized sensing service employs a resampling approach leaving the need for strict control of sensing timing. The data aggregation service makes use of application specific knowledge and distributed computing to suppress data transfer requirements. These middleware services are implemented on the Imote2 smart sensor platform, and their efficacy demonstrated experimentally.

Recently, wearable computers equipped with various biosensors such as smart watches, smart bands, and smart patches that support daily health management of users as well as patients have been released. Users of wearable computers such as smart watches face various difficulties in performing biometric information processes such as data sensing, collection, transmission, real-time analysis, and feedback in a weak wireless and mobile biometric information service environment. In particular, the biometric information collection interface is an important basic process that determines the quality and performance of the entire biometric information service. So far, research has focused on sensing hardware and logic. This study intensively considers the interface method for effectively sensing and collecting raw biometric information. In particular, the process of collecting biometric information is designed and analyzed from the perspective of periodicity. Therefore, we propose an efficient and stable periodic collection method.
The design of Graphic Information System(GIS) in various applications is suffering from the difficulty of data acquisition, which is labor-intensive and time consuming. In order to provide the spatial data rapidly and accurately, 4S-Van, a prototype mobile mapping system, has been developed. The 4S-Van consists of 1)Global Positioning System(GPS), Inertial Navigation System(INS) for estimating the geographic position and attitude of the moving van, i.e.,(x, y, z) and the direction of the Van, 2) Charge Coupled Device(CCD) camera and laser scanner for capturing images and for measuring depth from geographic objects, and 3) External Synchronization Device(ESD) and industrial PC for synchronizing data from GPS/INS/CCD camera and for storing the data. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the proto-Dpe 4S-Van system for spatial data acquisition for various GIS applications.

In MSC(Multi-spectral camera ), the incoming light is converted to electronic analog signals by the CCD(charge coupled device) detectors. The analog signals are amplified, biased and converted into digital signals (pixel data stream) in the FPE(Focal plane electronics ). The digital data is transmitted to the PMU for pre-processing to correct for nonuniformity, to partially reorder the pixel stream and to add header data for identification and synchronization In this paper, the video data streams is described in terms of hardware.
This study focuses on the concept of multi-scale wireless sensor networks for damage detection in civil infrastructure systems by first over viewing the general network philosophy and attributes in the areas of data acquisition, data reduction, assessment and decision making. The data acquisition aspect includes a scalable wireless sensor network acquiring acceleration and strain data, triggered using a Restricted Input Network Activation scheme (RINAS) that extends network lifetime and reduces the size of the requisite undamaged reference pool. Major emphasis is given in this study to data reduction and assessment aspects that enable a decentralized approach operating within the hardware and power constraints of wireless sensor networks to avoid issues associated with packet loss, synchronization and latency. After over viewing various models for data reduction, the concept of a data-driven Bivariate Regressive Adaptive INdex (BRAIN) for damage detection is presented. Subsequent examples using experimental and simulated data verify two major hypotheses related to the BRAIN concept: (i) data-driven damage metrics are more robust and reliable than their counterparts and (ii) the use of heterogeneous sensing enhances overall detection capability of such data-driven damage metrics.
The goal of this study is to present quantification method for empathy. The micro-movement technology (non-contact sensing method) was used to identify empathy level. Participants were first divided into two groups: Empathized and not empathized. Then, the upper body data of participants were collected utilizing web-cam when participants carried expression tasks. The data were analyzed and categorized into 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, 3 Hz, 5 Hz, 15 Hz. The average movement, variation, and synchronization of the movement were then compared. The results showed a low average movement and variation in a group who empathized. Also, the participants, who empathized, synchronized their movement during the task. This indicates that the people concentrates with each other when empathy has been established and show different levels of movement. These findings suggest the possibility of empathy quantification using non-contact sensing method.

The structural state of a bridge is currently examined by visual inspection or by wired sensor techniques, which are relatively expensive, vulnerable to inclement conditions, and time consuming to undertake. In contrast, wireless sensor networks are easy to deploy and flexible in application so that the network can adjust to the individual structure. Different sensing techniques have been used with such networks, but the acoustic emission technique has rarely been utilized. With the use of acoustic emission (AE) techniques it is possible to detect internal structural damage, from cracks propagating during the routine use of a structure, e.g. breakage of prestressing wires. To date, AE data analysis techniques are not appropriate for the requirements of a wireless network due to the very exact time synchronization needed between multiple sensors, and power consumption issues. To unleash the power of the acoustic emission technique on large, extended structures, recording and local analysis techniques need better algorithms to handle and reduce the immense amount of data generated. Preliminary results from utilizing a new concept called Acoustic Emission Array Processing to locally reduce data to information are presented. Results show that the azimuthal location of a seismic source can be successfully identified, using an array of six to eight poor-quality AE sensors arranged in a circular array approximately 200 mm in diameter. AE beamforming only requires very fine time synchronization of the sensors within a single array, relative timing between sensors of $1{\mu}s$ can easily be performed by a single Mote servicing the array. The method concentrates the essence of six to eight extended waveforms into a single value to be sent through the wireless network, resulting in power savings by avoiding extended radio transmission.
According to the image level definition for KOMPSAT-2 in KOMPSAT-2 Ground Station Specification, the level 0 is frame formatted, unprocessed data at full resolution; any and all communications artifacts (e.g., synchronization frames, communications headers) removed. The level 0 is used for two purposes: 1) exchange of imagery between image receiving & processing element (IRPE), and 2) image transfer from the Receiving & Archiving Subsystem to Search & Processing Subsystem. On-board processing of imagery data of KOMPSAT-2 includes JPEG-like compression and encryption besides conventional CCSDS packetization. The encryption is used to secure imagery data from any intervention during downlink and compression allows real-time downlink of image data reducing data rate produced from the camera. While developing ground receiving system for KOMPSAT-2, it was necessarily to define level 0 products. In this paper, we will suggest level 0 product definition for KOMPSAT-2 and explain reasons of the decisions made. The key factor used while defining the level 0 products is the efficiency of whole ground receiving system. The latter half of the paper will explain the implementation of software that generates level 0 products. The necessary steps to produce level 0 products will be explained, and the performance achieved will be presented.

An isolated feedback method for measuring the inverter DC-link voltage is proposed. This method provides a simple and economical solution to inverter control systems that use a flyback converter as a controller power supply. In the proposed method, data on the DC-link voltage are acquired when the primary side voltage appears on the secondary side of the flyback transformer, thereby eliminating the need to adopt an extra signal isolation method. To solve the non-synchronization problem between the flyback converter switching and main controller sampling, the external interrupt function of the micro-controller is used as a trigger signal for the A/D conversion.
Remotely sensed data have been utilized efficiently for damage detection immediately after the natural disaster since they provide valuable information on land cover change due to spatial synchronization and multitemporal observation over large areas. Damage information obtained at an early stage is important for rapid emergency response and recovery works. Many useful techniques to analyze the characteristics of the pre- and post-event satellite images in large-scale damage detection have been successfully investigated for emergency management. Since high-resolution satellite images provide a wealth of information on damage occurred in urban areas, they are successfully utilized for damage detection in urban areas. In this research, a method to perform automated damage detection is proposed based on the differences of the textural characteristics in pre- and post- high resolution satellite images.
