  • PURPOSE: To evaluate the usability of a kiosk-based healthcare service that provides a fitness evaluation and customized exercise program for elderly or chronic musculoskeletal system patients. METHODS: To evaluate the usability of the customized exercise service program, healthy adults (n=20) from Welfare B, located in Gwangju, were selected and studied. Subjective safety, operability, and satisfaction of individual users were obtained as data by distributing questionnaires to subjects who experienced this program and having them fill out the questionnaire. For descriptive statistics related to the survey, frequency analysis was used to determine the frequency and ratio of the variable values of the measurement items. RESULTS: As a result of the usability evaluation, the average score was 4.166, and the average score of each item was 4.025 for safety, 4.272 for operability, and 4.143 for satisfaction. Most users obtained high satisfaction and positive impressions. CONCLUSION: The HARUFIT service, a user-customized exercise program used in this study, can be developed into a device that can improve self-management ability and increase understanding of health care by providing customized exercise based on the results of physical fitness evaluation. It is possible to diversify health management methods and maximize the effect of exercise by making exercise a habit of chronic musculoskeletal disease patients or the elderly using these smart devices.

For the purpose of this, among those who were attending Day Care Centers belonging to Seniors Welfare Center of M1 and M2 located in Seoul. Among those who met all these requirements, 40 senior citizens were finally selected. After carrying out a preliminary test to the selected subjects, 20 elderly of Seniors Welfare Center of M1 were randomly placed as an experimental group, while other 20 people of Seniors Welfare Center of M2, as a control group. The Wholeness Program relevant to dementia behavior was carried out from March 14 to May 30 of 2016, for 12 weeks, twice a week. As for the measurement tool, this study depended on the Korean version of Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE-K), the Korean version of Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) and the Korean version of Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-K). While the elderly were participating in the Wholeness Program relevant to dementia behavior, they were measured two times in total, before and after the participation in dementia behavior. Based on SPSS-PC (version 21.0), firstly, independent t-test was carried out to understand the homogeneity between the experimental group and the control group. Secondly, matched-pair t-test was carried out between preliminary test and post-test to inquire into the effects of MMSE-K, K-MBI and GDS-K. Thirdly, ANOVA was conducted to confirm the variation (change amount) between preliminary test and post-test. According to the survey results, the Wholeness Program relevant to dementia behavior of the elderly shows overall effects in all spheres of changes of cognitive ability (MMSE-K), changes of physical capacity (K-MBI) and changes of depression level (GDS-K).

  • The purpose of this study was to identify correlation among social support, recovery resilience, and self-care behavior among the elderly with hypertension, as well as to clarify factors that affect self-care behavior. This was a descriptive study conducted with 183 hypertensive seniors over age 65 from three different senior welfare centers in C region. Data of this study were collected from Aug 20-31, 2018. T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression were used for analysis. As a result, the mean score of social support was $3.79{\pm}0.78$ out of 5, recovery resilience was $4.10{\pm}0.71$ out of 5, and self-care behavior was $3.93{\pm}0.51$ out of 5. Self-care behavior had a statistically significant positive correlation with social support(r=.204, p<.001) and recovery resilience(r=.405, p<.001). Factors influencing Self-care behavior were recovery resilience(${\beta}=.36$, p<.001) and regularity of exercise(${\beta}=.17$, p=.019). These factors explained 18.9% of self-care behavior(F=21.02, p<.001). The study results indicate that recovery resilience and regularity of exercise are critical factors affecting self-care behavior among the elderly with of hypertension. Therefore, to promote self-care behavior among the hypertensive seniors, regular exercise must be advised and the development and evaluation of nursing interventions that can improve recovery resilience may be necessary.

  • This study investigates the dietary risk factors in elderly individuals in rural Korea by focusing on the development of service programs that can improve their health. The sample included 1,000 free-living elderly individuals aged 65 and over in rural Korea. A three-stage stratified random sampling method based on 2010 Korean census data was employed. Data on the dietary status and the need for assistance in meal management were collected through face-to-face interviews. The dietary status was evaluated based on the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) checklist, and the outcomes for three groups classified base on their family type were examined. According to NSI scores, more than 70% of the subjects faced some nutritional risk. The activities most requiring assistance in meal management included preparing meals (18.3%) and purchasing food items (11.7%). More than half of the subjects reported that having meals at community senior centers at least once a week. The results indicate that those subjects from single-individual households were most likely to face some nutritional risk and require, assistance in purchasing food items and preparing meals. In addition, these subjects were least likely to be satisfied with their health and dietary management. To improve the dietary status of elderly individuals in rural Korea, any service programs should facilitate their daily activities by focusing on improving their diet, particularly that of those from low-income, single-individual households.

The research subjects were 230 care-givers who work in a sanitarium for the elderly in the East of Jeollanamdo. The tool used to measure their knowledge of the elderly was FAQ1 and the semantic differential scale was used to determine the attitude. Job stress was measured by the tool which was used by sun-ju Park. The data analysis was carried out by SPSS Win 13.0. The results of this study are as follows; The care-givers' knowledge level point towards the elderly was relatively low at 44.6%. The average point of attitude toward the elderly was 3.91, which is relatively moderate. The percentages of job stress was generally low. The results showed us that there was no correlation with the knowledge level of the elderly, the attitude towards the elderly and job stress. Since the results indicated that care-givers' knowledge level for the elderly was low, we reached the conclusion that further education where care-givers can get general knowledge for the elderly and aging is necessary. Moreover, research for strengthening positive attitudes towards the elderly is also necessary.
