The purpose of this study is to analyse the argument alternations in terms of semantic perspective. Argument alternation has long been an interesting topic for the linguists regardless of their linguistic schools. Semantic analysis of argument alternation is attempted by Dowty(2001) based on the Levin(1993)'s classification. The study is focused on the phenomenon where meaning changes with argument alternations even though those sentences look the same syntactically and lineally. 1 tried not only to classify verbs according to the meaning changes but to explain the alternations in semantic point of view. The verbs are divided into 4 types- Touch type, Hit type, Cut type, and Break type. Each type of verbs are tested if they show special characteristics with three alternations-Middle alternation, Body-part possessor Ascension, and Conative Alternation. And semantic analysis is tried based on that classification.

This paper has revisited the dative alternation in English, and defended the so-called polysemy view. The paper has argued for a particular format of lexical representation, one that allows reference to events. In addition to the semantic conditions, the paper has argued that the DO and PO constructions also allow for different information structures.
In this paper, we maintain that case makers '에e' and '에게ege', and '에서eseo' and '에게서egeseo' are not two separate morphemes but are simply allomorphs of the same morphemes respectively. When '에e' and '에게ege' are used as a dative marker, they show exactly the same semantic function and are in complementary distribution in relation to the semantic features of their preceding noun; that is, if the preceding noun is an animate noun, '에게ege' is used and '에e' is used if not. Also, '에게서egeseo' and '에서eseo' as ablative and locative case makers show exactly the same semantic function and show complementary distribution depending on whether the preceding noun is animate or non-animate. Therefore, we assume that these markers are semantically conditioned allomorphs.
Korean passive verbs are derived from their corresponding active verbs by suffixation or by adding endings and auxiliaries to their stems. Therefore. we assume p passive verbs share some lexical informations with their active counterparts. This paper extending the Generative Lexicon theory of Pustejovsky (995). aims to characterize the argument realization patterns of Korean passive verbs focusing on the case alternation a and to propose their lexical semantic structures which account for the syntactic behavior.
This study aims to discuss the word sense distinction of Korean middle verbs for restructuring KorLexVerb 1.0. Despite the duality of its meaning and syntactic structure, the word senses of middle verb are not clearly distinguished in current dictionaries. The underspecification causes very often mismatches that a same Korean word sense is used for two different English verb senses. A close examination on the syntactic and semantic properties of middle verb shows us that the word sense distinction and the reconstruction of hierarchical structure are indispensable. Finally, by doing this fine grained word sense distinction, we propose an alternative way of classification and description of the verb polysemy for KorLexVerb 1.0 as well as for dictionary-like language resources.

Objective: The focus of this study is brain plasticity associated with semantic aspects of language function in patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) Methods: Using longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), patterns of brain activation were observed in twelve left and seven right unilateral mTLE patients during a word-generation task relative to a pseudo-word reading task before and after anterior temporal section surgery. Results: No differences were observed in precentral activations in patients relative to normal controls (n = 12), and surgery did not alter the phonological-associated activations. The two mTLE patient groups showed left inferior prefrontal activations associated with semantic processing (word-generation>pseudo-word reading), as did control subjects. The amount of semantic-associated activation in the left inferior prefrontal region was negatively correlated with epilepsy duration in both patient groups. Following temporal resection, semantic-specific activations in inferior prefrontal region became more bilateral in left mTLE patients, but more left-lateralized in right mTLE patients. The longer the duration of epilepsy in the patients, the larger the increase in the left inferior prefrontal semantic-associated activation after surgery in both patient groups. Semantic activation of the intact hippocampus, which had been negatively correlated with seizure frequency, normalized after the epileptic side was removed. Conclusion: These results indicate alternation of semantic language network related to recruitment of left inferior prefrontal cortex and functional recovery of the hippocampus contralateral to the epileptogenic side, suggesting an intra- and inter-hemispheric reorganization following surgery.
This paper describes Korean Nominal Bank, a project that provides argument structure for instances of the predicative nouns in the Sejong parsed Corpus. We use the language resources of the Sejong project, so that the same set of data is annotated with more and more levels of annotation, since a new type of a language resource building project could bring new information of separate and isolated processing. We have based on the annotation scheme based on the Sejong electronic dictionary, semantically tagged corpus, and syntactically analyzed corpus. Our work also involves the deep linguistic knowledge of syntaxsemantic interface in general. We consider the semantic theories including the Frame Semantics of Fillmore (1976), argument structure of Grimshaw (1990) and argument alternation of Levin (1993), and Levin and Rappaport Hovav (2005). Various syntactic theories should be needed in explaining various sentence types, including empty categories, raising, left (or right dislocation). We also need an explanation on the idiosyncratic lexical feature, such as collocation and etc.

This paper deals with the complex verb formation of passive and potential predicates and syntactic structures projected by these verbs. Though both predicates are formed with the suffix -rare which has been assumed to originate from the same stem, they show significantly different syntactic behaviors. We propose two kinds of concatenation of base verbs and auxiliaries; passive verbs are lexically formed with the most restrictive mode of combination, while potential verbs are formed syntactically via more flexible combinatory operations of function composition. The difference in the mode of complex verb formation has significant consequences for their syntactic structures and semantic interpretations, including different combination with the honorific morphemes and subjectivization of arguments/adjuncts of base verbs. We also consider the case alternation phenomena and their implications for scope construals found in potential sentences, which can be accounted for in a unified manner in terms of the optional application of function composition.

The aim of this study is to analyze the complementizer that-deletion in embedded complement clauses in English. This paper is concerned with the alternation between the overt that-complementizer and the zero complementizer by the complementizer deletion (C-deletion or that-deletion) in constructions with a nominal complement that-clause, i.e. [VP Verb [CP that-TP]]. In this paper, we compare that-complementation and zero-complementation in a diachronic grammaticalization and corpus, and show that the complementizer that has its origin in pronouns diachronically and finally becomes to form a C-head of the functional category CP. We provide the syntactic and semantic explanation on the optionality of that-deletion while answering the question why and how that-deletion is getting increasing in use especially with the verb, think, in the informal contexts. With the major causes for the currently increasing use of that-deletion, we are concerned with the contexts in which the overt complementizers or the covert complementizers are preferred.
