  • This research focused on the examination of a "Goodness of Fit" model with reference to the interaction effects of temperament and context. Two hundred forty 5th graders from urban and rural areas were administered the EAS (Emotionality, Activity, Sociability) and the Perceived Competence scales. The degree of satisfaction of mothers with their children's temperament was assessed for the context measure. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that the interaction of children's emotion and mothers' satisfaction with children's emotion explained perceived social competence and general self-worth. This result supported the goodness of fit model. However, interaction effects were not found in children's perception of cognitive and physical competence. Also, children's activity and sociability showed strong main effects on perceived competence. It implies that activity and sociability should be applied to the personological model. The implication of the findings for following studies of goodness of fit model were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of lifestyle on the perceived value of children in university students. Questionnaires were distributed to 467 university students with questions covering topics including general personal information and characteristics, lifestyle type, and value of children. First, a cluster analysis based on lifestyle showed that the subjects could be categorized into three groups: negative-leisure types, active-achievement types, and affirmative-fidelity types. The negative-leisure type was highly leisure-oriented and showed a negative self-value; the active-achievement type showed a perspective that valued personal and occupational self-development and a high level of labor-oriented value; and the affirmative-fidelity type favored materialism, seeking occupational aptitude and worth and showing a positive self-value. Second, an investigation of the impact of these three lifestyle types on the students' value of children revealed that the active-achievement type group had high level of belief in the necessity of childbirth, the affirmative-fidelity type group highly valued fulfilling an active parent role, and the active-achievement type group were inclined to delay childbirth. Further, the negative-leisure type group wanted the lowest number of children, while the affirmative-fidelity type group wanted the highest number of children. This study reveals that university students' lifestyle does have an effect on their value of children. It is therefore proposed that a value-focused population education for increasing fertility should relate not only to individuals' value of children but also to their broader lifestyle.

To support this study, 1:1 interviews were conducted. The interviews focused on the adolescents' perception of their own families, perception of family in general, demand for a group-based healthy family support program, etc. The results of the interviews are as follows. First, as for the perception of their own families, the 'happiest' and 'saddest' experiences they reported were related to their own families for both the current and former resident adolescents of the institution. Second, as for the perception of family in general, both groups defined a healthy family as a family with members who 'help one another in times of difficulties and live happily in harmony together'. Third, regarding the educational contents that are essential to the establishment of a healthy family, a majority of the current residents answered cooking, yet a majority of former residents mentioned more practical education-such as the role of parents, child education, asset management, human relationships, and self worth enhancement, etc.
