  • We developed a self-operated paper pump that can maintain a nearly constant flow rate of an aqueous solution along a paper strip channel in paper-based analytical devices (PADs). The quasi-stationary flow rate was controlled by increasing the crosssectional channel area (capillary force) using a fan-shaped absorption pad coupled with a paper strip channel. The flow rate is regulated by varying the fan angle of the circular absorbing pad. Furthermore, the flow rate can be increased by furnishing a hollow cavity at the center of a conventional paper strip channel. The rate was regulated by varying the length of the hollow paper channel in the flow rate range of 5.1-26.4 mm/min. As a preliminary work, a paper-pump-coupled PAD was fabricated, and its CV detection capability was evaluated for the redox reaction of Fe(CN)6+4/+3. The combination of a paper pump with a PAD resulted in an ideal CV curve with a higher limiting current and faster response time. These results are interpreted well by the Levich equation, which suggests that the paper pump is a very useful component in paper-based sensors.

  • Numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the atomic layer deposition(ALD) of silicon nitride using silane and ammonia as precursors. The present study simulated the surface reactions for as-deposited $Si_3N_4$ as well as the kinetics for the reactions of $SiH_4$ and $NH_3$on the semiconductor wafer. The present numerical results showed that the ALD process is dependent on the activation constant. It was also shown that the low activation constant leads to the self-limiting reaction required for the ALD process. The inlet and wafer temperatures were 473 K and 823 K, respectively. The system pressure is 2 Torr.

  • Acute abdominal pain is a common complaint in childhood, and it can be caused by a wide range of underlying surgical and non-surgical conditions. The most common non-surgical condition is gastroenteritis, while the most common surgical condition is appendicitis. Abdominal pain in children varies with age, associated symptoms, and pain location. Although acute abdominal pain is usually benign and self-limiting, there are uncommon but life-threatening conditions that require urgent care. Meticulous history taking and physical examinations are essential to determine the cause of acute abdominal pain and to identify children with surgical conditions such as appendicitis.

  • We fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid thin film for the purpose of encapsulation by molecular layer deposition (MLD) using Trimethylaluminium (TMA) and Adipoyl Chloride (AC). Ellipsometry was employed to verify self limiting reaction of ALD. Linear relationship between number of cycle and thickness was obtained. We found that desirable organic thin film fabrication is possible by MLD surface reaction in nanoscale. Purging was carried out after dosing of each precursor to form monolayer in each sequence. We also confirmed roughness of the organic thin film by atomic force microscopy. We deposit TMA and AC at $70^{\circ}C$ and that 1.78A root mean square was obtained which indicates that uniform organic thin film was formed. We confirmed precursor's functional group by IR spectrum. We calculated WVTR of organic-inorganic hybrid super-lattice epitaxial layer using Ca test. WVTR indicates superlattice film can be possibly use as encapsulation in flexible devices.

  • Silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) films prepared by plasma-enhanced atomic-layer deposition were successfully grown at temperatures of $100\;to\;250^{\circ}C$, showing self-limiting characteristics. The growth rate decreases with an increasing deposition temperature. The relative dielectric constants of $SiO_2$ films are ranged from 4.5 to 7.7 with the decrease of growth temperature. A $SiO_2$ film grown at $250^{\circ}C$ exhibits a much lower leakage current than that grown at $100^{\circ}C$ due to its high film density and the fact that it contains deeper electron traps.

  • Gold-polypyrrole segment nanowires prepared using anodized aluminum oxide templates can be assembled into a curved superstructure that shows stimuli-induced contraction and expansion. The radius of the superstructures can be predicted using the simple equation suggested by J. K. Lim et al. (Nano Lett. 8, 4441 (2008)). The suggested equation, however, is valid only within the limiting condition in that the length of the polypyrrole segment is comparable to, or much longer than the gold segment. In this study, the original equation was modified to a new equation that is valid for all length scales of polypyrrole segments. The radius of the superstructures calculated using the modified equation was compared with the result calculated by the original equation, and the validity of the modified equation is discussed.

  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections cause epidemic or sporadic acute hepatitis, which are mostly self-limiting. However, viral infection in immunocompromised patients and pregnant women may result in serious consequences, such as chronic hepatitis and liver damage, mortality of the latter of which reaches up to 20-30%. Type I interferon (IFN)-induced antiviral immunity is known to be the first-line defense against virus infection. Upon HEV infection in the cell, the virus genome is recognized by pathogen recognition receptors, leading to rapid activation of intracellular signaling cascades. Expression of type I IFN triggers induction of a barrage of IFN-stimulated genes, helping the cells cope with viral infection. Interestingly, some of the HEV-encoded genes seem to be involved in disrupting signaling cascades for antiviral immune responses, and thus crippling cytokine/chemokine production. Antagonistic mechanisms of type I IFN responses by HEV have only recently begun to emerge, and in this review, we summarize known HEV evasion strategies and compare them with those of other hepatitis viruses.

  • We have deposited ZnO thin films by ultraviolet (UV) enhanced atomic layer deposition using diethylznic (DEZ) and water (H2O) as precursors with UV light. The atomic layer deposition relies on alternating dose of the precursor on the surface and subsequent chemisorption of the precursors with self-limiting growth mechanism. Though ALD is useful to deposition conformal and precise thin film, the surface reactions of the atomic layer deposition are not completed at low temperature in many cases. In this experiment, we focused on the effects of UV radiation during the ALD process on the properties of the inorganic thin films. The surface reactions were found to be complementary enough to yield uniform inorganic thin films and fully react between DEZ and H2O at the low temperature by using UV irradiation. The UV light was effective to obtain conductive ZnO film. And the stability of TFT with UV-enhanced ZnO was improved than ZnO by thermal ALD method. High conductive UV-enhanced ZnO film have the potential to applicability of the transparent electrode.

  • Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a rare, benign, self-limiting lesion, but it mimics carcinoma both clinically and histologically. Authors present a case of NS on the right posterior hard palate in a 16-year-old boy. This case showed underlying erosive bone change on CT images. We supposed this lesion resulted from the local anesthesia for dental treatment. Presented NS is the only one case from approximately 1,500 oral and maxillofacial biopsies $(0.07\%)$ at Chonnam National University Hospital during the period from 1999 to 2004.

  • Aerodynamic forces acting on a curved blade are computed theoretically taking into account the variation of wind speed over the blade to investigate the performance of a vertical axis wind rotor. It is shown that the rotor does not self start at the rated wind speed without a supplementary starting device and that most of the power output is contributed by the central portion of the rotor, and the use of spoilers for limiting the maximum rotational speed is needed for safety. It is also shown that provision of skew angle to the blade does not improve the starting characterstics and only reduces the maximum power output. The effects of geometric variables such as skew angle, blade solidity and ratio of the rotor height to diameter are also discussed.
