  • This study was initiated to investigate sixth graders' gender characteristics in science problem solving process and thus find out the proper learning and teaching strategies for each gender. A total of 14 students, each of seven male and female students, were selected through three tests, including items of science knowledge, science inquiry, and creativity. Students were required to solve 26 items and to think aloud for researchers help understand how they thought in their problem solving process. Males and females showed some similarity and difference in four steps of problem solving process, understanding, planning, solving, and reviewing. We found gender differences in self-confidence of their answer. This study is expected to help develop teachers' differential teaching strategy for male and female students' science problem solving.

  • Generally, it is known that human beings have both emotion and rationality. Especially, emotion is so subjective that human beings might act in different way for the same environment according to their own emotion. Emotion also plays very important role in communication with someone else For an agent, even though it is designed to act delicately, when it is designed without internal emotion, it can not interact dynamically just like human beings. In this paper, we suggest an agent which action is effected by not only rationality but also emotion to make it interact with human beings dynamically. It is composed of supervised learning, SOM (Self-Organizing Map) and fuzzy decision.

  • A controller using a multilayer neural network is proposed to the dynamic control of a PUMA 560 robot arm. This controller is developed based on an error back-propagation (BP) neural network. Since the neural network can model an arbitrary nonlinear mapping, it is used as a commanded feedforward torque generator. A Proportional Derivative (PD) feedback controller is used in parallel with the feedforward neural network to train the system. The neural network was trained by the current state of the manipulator as well as the PD feedback error torque. No a priori knowledge on system dynamics is needed and this information is rather implicitly stored in the interconnection weights of the neural network. In another experiment, the neural network was trained with the current, past and future positions only without any use of velocity sensors. Form this thim window of position values, BP network implicitly filters out the velocity and acceleration components for each joint. Computer simulation demonstrates such powerful characteristics of the neurocontroller as adaptation to changing environments, robustness to sensor noise, and continuous performance improvement with self-learning.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of student nurses during their clinical practice periods in an alcoholic ward. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological study design was employed. Individual interviews were conducted and audio-taped. Colaizzi's method of data analysis was applied to inductively determine themes and formulated meanings. Data saturation was achieved and methodological rigor was established. Results: Four themes were identified and these themes included anxiety of nursing practice in unfamiliar setting, sympathy with patients, learning about the inpatient alcoholics care, and self-reflection. Conclusion: Nursing students had positive and negative experiences in their clinical practice. The results of this study had important implications regarding clinical practice and research for nursing clinical education.

  • In this paper I have tried to find the points which current Math teachers should reconsider in their classes and suggested how to improve the teaching methods in the class. For these answers, I analysed Teaching plans of 30 Math teachers in K province and observed their model classes. The conclusions acquired by these observations are the followings. First, Math teachers should have a great deal of enthusiasm in their classes. Second, Math teachers must understand the curriculum. Third, Math teachers have to understand their students. Fourth, Math teachers should endeavor with other teachers through the workshop. Fifth, Math teachers should be professional and open-minded to make their classes public anytime.

  • Neural networks are used in the framework of sensorbased tracking control of robot manipulators. They learn by practice movements the relationship between PSD (an analog Position Sensitive Detector) sensor readings for target positions and the joint commands to reach them. Using this configuration, the system can track or follow a moving or stationary object in real time. forthermore, an efficient neural network architecture has been developed for real time learning. This network uses multiple sets of simple backpropagation networks one of which is selected according to which division (corresponding to a cluster of the self-organizing feature map) in data space the current input data belongs to. This lends itself to a very training and processing implementation required for real time control.

  • As a part of attempts to understand better mathematics classroom culture, this paper first reviews plausible factors which influence the mathematics teacher's own development of instructional goals. The proposed factors consist of teacher characteristics and sociocultural factors. The teacher factors include learning and teaching experience, knowledge, beliefs, and personality traits. The sociocultural factors include cultural and educational norms, curriculum development and administration, teacher education, and professional models with community, This paper then presents detailed interview questions to explore significant influences on the teacher's conceptions of mathematics and its teaching. The interview probes 12 topic areas: (a) early influences on becoming a teacher, (b) the decision to become a teacher, (c) the teacher education years, (d) early mathematics interests, (e) early teaching experiences, (f) career path, (g) influence of peers within the school, (h) influence of administrators, (i) professional development, (j) professional self-development, (k) mathematics teaching, and (i) educational policies.
