Assembly line has been recognized as an efficient production system in mass production. However, the recent production environment characterized as mass customization urges production managers to transform a long assembly line to a number of short assembly cells. To maximize the utilization of resources in an assembly cell, it is important to have the line balanced. This paper presents a bucket brigade-based assembly cell. Bucket brigade is a way of coordinating workers who progressively perform a set of assembly operations on a flow line. Each worker follows a simple rule: perform assembly operations on a product until the next worker downstream takes it over; then go back to the previous worker upstream to take over a new assembly job. In this way, the line balances itself. The bucket brigade assembly cell is analyzed and compared with traditional assembly lines and general assembly cells. The paper also discusses some prerequisite requirements and limitations when the bucket brigade assembly cells are employed.
Background: Long working hours adversely affect worker safety and health. In 2004, Korea passed legislation that limited the work week to 40 hours, in an effort to improve quality-of-life and increase business competitiveness. This regulation was implemented in stages, first for large businesses and then for small businesses, from 2004 to 2011. We previously reported that average weekly working hours decreased from 2006 to 2010, based on the Korean Working Conditions Survey. Methods: In the present study, we examine whether average weekly working hours continued to decrease in 2014 based on the 2014 Korean Working Conditions Survey. Results: The results show that average weekly working hours among all groups of workers decreased in 2014 relative to previous years; however, self-employed individuals and employers (who are not covered by the new legislation) in the specific service sectors worked > 60 h/wk in 2014. Conclusion: The Korean government should prohibit employees from working excessive hours and should also attempt to achieve social and public consensus regarding work time reduction to improve the safety, health, and quality-of-life of all citizens, including those who are employers and self-employed.
Purpose: This study was done to describe the correlation among the blue color worker's health-promoting behavior, occupational life-satisfaction and self-esteem. Method: The subjects consisted of 190 industrial workers employed in one electronics manufacturing plant in Gumi and were obtained by a convenience sample. Data were collected from October 6th to 17th, 2002 by structured questionnaires. The instruments for this study were Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile(47 items), Occupational Life-satisfaction Scale(20 items) and Self-esteem Scale(10 items). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SAS program were used to analyze the data. Result: 1) The average item score for the health-promoting behavior was 3.01; the highest score on the subscale was self-actualization(M=3.39) with the lowest being exercise(M=2.37). 2) The average item score for the occupational life-satisfaction was 2.96. 3) The average item score for the self-esteem was 2.83. 4) Health-promoting behavior was significantly different according to educational level and age. 5) Occupational life satisfaction was significantly different according to age and religion. 6) Self-esteem was significantly different according to age. 7) Health-promoting behavior was positively related to occupational life-satisfaction and self-esteem. The occupational life-satisfaction was positively related to self-esteem. Conclusion : It follows from this study that there is a very correlation among the blue color worker's health-promoting behavior, occupational life-satisfaction and self-esteem. Therefore health promoting programs that increase occupational life- satisfaction and self-esteem should be developed to promote a healthy lifestyle of the blue color workers.
In order to investigate the effects of rotating shift work on the subjective characteristics of sleep and mental depression questionnaire survey was carried out on 405 shift workers and 153 nonshift workers who were nurses employed. in three university hospital. The questionnaire forms used in this study were the self rating depression scale(SDS) and circadian type questionnaire(CTQ) factor R(rigidity/flexbility of sleeping habit) and factor V(inability/ability to overcome drowsiness). The results were as follows ; 1. Mean score of CTQ R in shift workers was significantly lower than that in nonshift workers, however, no significant difference in CTQ V was observed between two groups. 2. Mean score of SDS was significantly higher in shift workers(44.1) than in nonshift workers(39.8). 3. Mean self rating depression scale scores of pervasive affect, physiologic equivalents and psychological equivalents were significantly higher in shift workers than in nonshift workers. 4. In shift worker, mean SDS score was the highest in confusion and followed by diurnal variation, retardation, and indeciveness in the descending order. In nonshift worker, that score was the highest in decreased libido and followed by confusion, and indeciveness in the descending order. 5. Circadian type questionnaire scores was significantly and negatively correlated with significantly and negatively correlating with Self-rating depression scale scores(r=-0.473).
The job characteristics and competencies of 285 dietitians in employee foodservices were investigated by worker-oriented job analysis methodology. The purposes of this study were to : a) determine the knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics(KASO, hereafter) needed for dietitians in two types of employee foodservice groups(self-operated vs. contracted) and b) the analysis of the degree of frequency and importance and entry requirements of KASO items listed below : their degree of frequency, the level of importance and their function as entry requirements. The 134 KASO items would be divided into 12 task categories. The questionnaire was mailed to 250 dietitians who are members of The Korean Dietetic Association Practice Group in self-operated foodservices(hereafter group A) and 250 dietitians who are employed in contracted foodservice companies(hereafter group B). Completed questionnaires were received from 285 dietitians(121 in self-operated, 164 in contracted) ; with a response rate of 57%. Statistical data analysis was completed using the SPSS/win and the SAS/win packages. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1) Analysis of the degree of frequency, importance and entry requirements of 134 KASO items in group A showed a high priority(score〉4.0) placed on 14 items in relation to dietetic tasks and 9 items in relation to human attributes, whereas in group B 19 items in relation to dietetic tasks and 11 items in relation to human attributes. 2) Comparing responses about the KASO items in the 12 task categories, there was a significant difference between the two sample groups with regard to degree of frequency : group A scored 3.29, group B scored 3.50(p〈0.01). With regard to importance of KASO items in 12 task categories, group A scored 3.78 and group B scored 3.88 showing no significant differences. With to entry requirements of KASO items in 12 task categories, group A scored 3.29 and group B scored 3.46 showing a significant difference(p〈0.05). Object: This study investigated the effect of self-esteem on depression through family relations satisfaction and tested whether working types would moderate such associations. Method: The subjects were 2,145 elderly who are healthy enough to work and were selected for the ninth Korean Welfare Panel Study. The resulting data were analysed by using the statistical program SPSS 2.1 with reference to steps for testing mediation by Baron and Kenny, moderated mediation by Heyes. Results: Self-esteem has both direct and indirect significant effects, revealing that family relations satisfaction fully mediates the effects of coping strategies of family conflict on depression. From the working types, self-employed/employer and unpaid family worker, moderate the indirect effect of self-esteem on depression through family relations satisfaction. Conclusions: In practical intervention of elderly depression reduction, efforts to increase family relations satisfaction is effective when it is difficult to us address satisfaction. Moreover, we have to provide intervention for elderly with work in context of relationship of individual and familial factor.

The self-reported symptoms of workers such as headache, fatigue, itching and dryness regarded as SBS symptoms commonly occur after around 3:00 pm and are relieved after leaving their office buildings. according to results in previous studies, above are possibly related to CO2 concentrations. It is also found work environment factors and the satisfaction on indoor environment are all associated with worker's health. Hopefully, this overview of current work environments concerning the level of satisfaction and health problems of workers would help create healthier indoor environment.
This study was planned to analyze the effect of the types of employment on work-related injury experience. The types of employment may have influenced on working conditions including the exposure to risk factors. Korean Working Conditions Survey have collected the various working conditions as household survey with structured questionnaire. The probability of work-related injury of self-employed is more than that of regular worker. But there is no difference of probability of work-related injury experience between regular and irregular worker controlled by general characteristics and the exposure to risk factors. Authors have found that the type of employment have indirect effect on work-related injury experience via the exposure to risk factors. The result of this study may be heuristic one because of data limitation as cross sectional survey data. In future, well designed survey data can evaluate the effect of the type of employment on safety and health status.
