Purpose : To determined the effect of self-stretching and manual therapy on ankle joint about ROM and persisting effect. Method : Twenty participants(6 male, 14 female) ramdomly divided into self-stretching and manual therapy group. Each participant started with lunge test then self-stretching and manual therapy intervention was performed. After intervention lunge test was performed again. Last lunge test was performed after 30 minute break. Result : Result of lunge test showed both self-stretching and manual therapy group have significant difference in immediate increase of ROM and persistence effect(p<0.05). However, persistence effect of each group did not show significant difference(p>0.05). Conclusion : Manual therapy and well-designed self-stretching by therapist showed the effect in increase ROM.
Chronic mental-handicapped people are lacking in non-verbal expression such as eye contact, intonation, voice volume, facial expression, and gesture as well as the contents of speech, speak with a monotonous voice, fail to be vivid and clear in voice, and have absence of expression, thereby bringing about difficulty even for social adjustment and about low self-esteem. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine effectiveness for enhancing self-expression and self-esteem by applying music therapy to the chronic mental-handicapped. The subjects were the chronic mental-handicapped who receive rehabilitation service at the community rehabilitation center, and who have over 10 years in the duration of disease. 1he music therapy activity was progressed with totally 14 sessions during 7 weeks with twice a week. This study confirmed t-test that is verification of difference in the mean, in order to examine difference between before and after music therapy in self-expression and self-esteem of the chronic mental-handicapped, and researched into qualitative case. The findings are as follows. First, as a result of score in self-expression scale, the significant improvement was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. The significant difference was indicated in verbal self-expression, phonetic self-expression, and non-verbal self-expression, which are its sub-spheres. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-expression. Second, as a result of score in self-esteem scale, the significant difference was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-esteem. Through the above results, the music therapy showed effectiveness of self-expression ability and self-esteem in the chronic mental-handicapped at the community rehabilitation center, thereby having been confirmed to be possibly utilized as rehabilitation program for the social skill ability and the social adjustment of the chronic mental-handicapped.
Purpose: To investigate the relationship between self-concept and mental health of physical therapy students. Methods: We recruited 179 currently enrolled college freshman, sophomores, and juniors studying physical therapy. The instruments used for this study were Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale, Choi Chung Hoon's Perceeptual Orientation Scale, and the Mental Health Test modified by Lee. Results: The mean self-concept score was 3.97, a positive self concept, and the mean mental health score was 1.04. The mean dimension score for mental health ranged from: r=0.79$\sim$r=1.29. The relationship between self-concept and the mental health showed a negative correlation (r=-0.693, p<0.01). Conclusion: Modifications to the current program may improve self-concept and the mental health of physical therapy students.
This study explored the sandplay therapy case of a middle-aged woman having difficulty with interpersonal relationships and wanting to increase her self-identity. The goal of the therapy was to change her relationships with others by self-examination and becoming conscious of her negative animus and femininity in a free and protected space provided by sandplay therapy. Forty-five therapy sessions were held. The client exhibited her lonesomeness and fantasies by making sandtrays of a house she would like to live in, a park she would like to relax at and dreams she would like to fulfill in the initial phase of therapy (1~8, Who am I?). In the intermediate phase of therapy (9~33, Meeting myself), she displayed scenes of her negative self and breaking away from her negative self by making sandtrays of shadows, deaths, creations, a soaring scene and a disappearing alligator. In the final phase of therapy (34~45, Discovery of the real Self), she showed scenes of her meeting a positive self by making sandtrays of hope, coexistence, start, harmony and community. This study showed the effectiveness of sandplay therapy since the client' relationships with others were improved through her self-awareness by sandplay therapy in the free and protected space.
Objective: This study aimed to identify the area with greatest effect using self-myofascial release technique (self-MFR) in the hamstring, suboccipital, and plantar regions. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-two adult subjects were evaluated for flexibility and hamstring pain threshold after self-MFR. Based on the superficial back line, the self-MFR application areas were the suboccipital region, hamstring, and plantar regions. Self-MFR was applied to each area using a wooden pole for a total of 4 minutes. Self-MFR was applied for 3 days at the same time of day, which was randomly assigned for each subject. Treatment was applied to one area each day. The sit and reach test (SRT), active range of motion (AROM), and passive ROM (PROM) were used to determine changes in flexibility, and an algometer was used to determine pain threshold. Pre/post-self-MFR effectiveness was tested using a paired t-test. Repeated measurement was used to compare self-MFR effects in the suboccipital, hamstring, and plantar regions. Results: When the self-MFR technique was applied to the 3 areas, the SRT showed significant improvement over baseline (p<0.05). Bilateral AROM and PROM showed significant improvements (p<0.05). When the self-MFR technique was applied to the hamstring, the semimembranosus showed a significant change in pain threshold (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that indirect application based on the Anatomy Trains could be effective for those who need to improve muscle flexibility. Moreover, self-MFR easily alleviates myofascial pain while maintaining flexibility, and can be performed at any time and place.

Purpose: Self-care behavior is a key dimension of healthcare quality among elderlys with diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with self-care behaviors related to insulin therapy among elders with diabetes mellitus. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional, descriptive design using questionnaires. The participants were 147 older adult patients with diabetes mellitus receiving insulin therapy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression with SPSS statistics 19.0 program. Results: Participants' self-care behaviors related to insulin therapy were not adequate. Stepwise multiple regression analysis for self-care behaviors related to insulin therapy revealed that the most powerful predictor was self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, family support and frequency of blood sugar test explained 54.4% of the variance in self-care behaviors related to insulin therapy. Conclusion: The results indicate a need to promote self-efficacy, family support and frequency of blood sugar testing with these participants. In addition, strategies to improve self-care behaviors among elderly patients should be considered by health professionals, family members and the elderly patients themselves.
In this study, it is explored the effect of fashion therapy on depression, positive emotion, negative emotion, appearance interest, body satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-efficacy of female patients. Eight cancer patients and 12 general patients participated in the 4-week fashion therapy program. When comparing results before and after the fashion therapy, depression and negative emotions were significantly decreased while positive emotions and self-efficacy were significantly increased. There was no significant influence on appearance interest, body satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. In group comparison, significant changes were observed in depression, positive emotion and negative emotion regardless of groups. However, cancer patients indicated a significant improvement in self-efficacy compared to general patients who did not whereas patients with a high level of depression showed a significant enhancement on body satisfaction compared to patients with a low level of depression. Also, patients with a low level of pain indicated a significant improvement on self-esteem and self-efficacy compared to patients with a high level of pain. Perceived effect and satisfaction of the fashion therapy were relatively high. Study results may positively contribute to building a knowledge and experimental base of fashion therapy that is widely applicable to diverse parties for the future.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group art therapy on maternal parenting stress and self-efficacy. The subjects of the study included 16 parents of elementary school students who participated in a group art therapy program offered at B Education Center, Pusan. Eight parents who wanted to receive parental education were allocated into an experimental group, While the other eight parents were regarded as the control group. Mothers in the experimental group participated in the group art therapy program which discussed parent education theories. This Program was composed of 17 sessions, performed once a week for one and a half hours. Research tools employed included parent stress test and parent self-efficacy test. The following results were obtained: Group art therapy was found to bring about a statistically significant decrease in parenting stress. Group art therapy was also found to bring about a statistically significant increase in parent self-efficacy. These results suggest that a program which integrates various parents education theories, within a group art therapy setting, can become an effective parent education tool which decreases maternal parenting stress and increases parent self efficacy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of group art therapy on the self-efficacy and sociality of middle school students from single-parent families. The major results of this study were as follows: First, it was revealed that the activities of group art therapy were effective in making the self-efficacy of students from single-parent families higher by expressing their thought, and feelings better and having more confidence in themselves. Second, it was revealed that the activities of group art therapy were effective in improving the sociality of students from single-parent families by showing better performance in relationship with peers. Third, it was revealed that the activities of group art therapy had an effect on students' affirmative feelings according to each stage. That is, the students' feelings became more affirmative after this art therapy activities. Fourth, this study proved that K-HTP was effective in improving the self-efficacy and sociality of middle school students from single-parent families Fifth, this study proved that KFD was effective to improve the self-efficacy and sociality of middle school students from single-parent families. In conclusion, the Group Art Therapy had the effect on improving the self-efficacy and sociality of students from single-parent families.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of sandplay therapy for couples on the self-differentiation, and heterosexual relationship satisfaction, of couples who are college students'. The subjects were four couples who are college students living in Seoul with low self-differentiation and heterosexual relationship satisfaction. I carried out sandplay therapy on four couples for once a week for 10 weeks, and each session was 70 minutes long. In this study, the self-differentiation scale was modified for Korea on the basis of Bowen's family systems theory (1976), and it was used as a research tool. Yu (2000) and Lee (2000) made a scale to measure heterosexual relationship satisfaction after they adjusted the Korea Marital Satisfaction Inventory (K-MSI). The scale was also used in order to compare pre-therapy and post-therapy traits and identify any changes. In addition, the group's behavior and interactions were observed and recorded in each session throughout the process of sandplay therapy with the couples, and the behanior and interactions were analyzed along with the change flow in the sand trays. The study's outcomes are summed up as follows. First, sandplay therapy with couples advances the level of self-differentiation in college students. Second, sandplay therapy with couples improves the heterosexual relationship satisfaction on college students. Third, the trays used in sandplay therapy with couples showed positive changes as the therapy progressed. As the sessions continued, negative factors in the trays decreased and the trays converged into one. As the sessions proceeded, it was observed that the couples became closer, felt more comfortable with each other, compromised and reflected on their relationship. The study's results show that sandplay therapy with couples increased the level of self-differentiation in college students and heterosexual relationship satisfaction, thus proving the therapy's effectiveness.
