  • The purpose of this paper is to clarify the naming creation process of cultural contents based on the violation of selectional restrictions. This is to insist that the violation of selectional restrictions should be significantly considered as a mode of story planning and title naming in the cultural contents such as 'King and the Clown' and 'Ballerina Who Loves B-Boy'. This approach of selectional restrictions is based on the insistence of Chomsky's 'Aspects of the Theory of Syntax' in 1965. His idea had proposed that violation of linguistic rules affects the acceptability in the selectional properties of words and sentences. This focuses on the naming creation of cultural contents by widening his notion between selectional restrictions and the violation of selectional restrictions.

  • The paper presents methodology and techniques for design and implementation of the SENKOV System based on the validation of set membership and dictionaries. And it performs verb concept classification available for establishing the selectional restriction relationships among adverbs and verbs. The paper is important in that it has made the first attempt at classifying Korean verb concepts for the semantic analysis. We select about 600 Korean verbs which are commonly used in the daily life, and implements the SENKOV System. According to results of the experiments, SENKOV has 44 top nodes and depth of average 2.35, and that it can be utilized to classify Korean verb concept for the selectional restrictions among adverbs and verbs.

  • Korean grammar checkers typically detect context-dependent errors by employing heuristic rules; these rules are formulated by language experts and consisted of lexical items. Such grammar checkers, unfortunately, show low recall which is detection ratio of errors in the document. In order to resolve this shortcoming, a new error-decision rule-generalization method that utilizes the existing KorLex thesaurus, the Korean version of Princeton WordNet, is proposed. The method extracts noun classes from KorLex and generalizes error-decision rules from them using the Tree Cut Model and information-theory-based MDL (minimum description length).

  • There are a fair number of suffixes in English whose conditions on attachment refer to stress and/or segmental information contained within the words they attach to (see Siegel 1974, Jespersen 1942 and Marchand 1969). Through a wide study of relevant data, we will delve deeply into such phonological restrictions on the bases, which may as well be divided into four distinct types: haplological constraints; segmental constraints; prosodic constraints; and mixed types. We will further assume here that the category/ subcategorization requirements of affixes are subject to the Projection Principle (PP) as conceived in Kiparsky (1983). It will be shown how this PP interacts with phonological constraints placed upon the affix in question, especially in the treatment of-ful (inventful/mournful) or -en (longen/lengthen). Our account of problematic affixations in English is based on a number of violable constraints in OT.

Abstract An algorithm is proposed for the resolution of case ambiguity caused by the use of auxiliary postpositions in Korean language. The algorithm utilizes verb dictionary which provides subcategorization information and selectional restrictions, and the thesaurus as well as a set of simple heuristic rules. The algorithm is appropriate for Korean language where required complements are often omitted. The algorithm performed successfully in an experiment using medium-sized subcategorization dictionary and thesaurus.

  • The lexical semantic system should be built to grasp lexical semantic information more clearly. In this paper, we studied a semantic clustering of predicates that is one of the steps in building the lexical semantic system. Unlike previous studies that used argument of subcategorization(subject and object), selectional restrictions and interaction information of adverb, we used sense tagged definition in dictionary for the semantic clustering of predicate, and also attempted hierarchical clustering of predicate using the relationship between the generic concept and the specific concept. Most of the predicates in the dictionary were used for clustering. Total of 106,501 predicates(85,754 verbs, 20,747 adjectives) were used for the test. We got results of clustering which is 2,748 clusters of predicate and 130 recursive definition clusters and 261 sub-clusters. The maximum depth of cluster was 16 depth. We compared results of clustering with the Sejong semantic classes for evaluation. The results showed 70.14% of the cohesion.
