  • In this study, seismic anisotropic tomography algorithm was developed for imaging the seismic velocity anisotropy of the subsurface. This algorithm includes several inversion schemes in order to make the inversion process stable and robust. First of all, the set of the inversion parameters is limited to one slowness, two ratios of slowness and one direction of the anisotropy symmetric axis. The ranges of the inversion parameters are localized by the pseudobeta transform to obtain the reasonable inversion results and the inversion constraints are controlled efficiently by ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. Especially, the inversion using the Fresnel volume is applied to the anisotropic tomography and it can make the anisotropic tomography more stable than ray tomography as it widens the propagation angle coverage. The algorithm of anisotropic tomography is verified through the numerical experiments. And, it is applied to the real field data measured at limestone region and the results are discussed with the drill log and geological survey data. The anisotropic tomography algorithm will be able to provide the useful tool to evaluate and understand the geological structure of the subsurface more reasonably with the anisotropic characteristics.

  • There are many techniques to calculate the exact position of deep seated tunnel. Especially, tomography method has been used generally in present days. This method has been performed mainly by wave traveltime. Because of short interval of two measuring boreholes, it was very hard to interpret the exact tunnel position. To solve this problem, seismic amplitude method was tried to detect exact pososition of tunnel in this study.

  • Non-destructive method by tomography for safety diagnosis of civil engineering and building structures is tried. There are traveltime tomography that uses traveltime and fullwave tomography that uses the initial shock and seismic amplitude. But these methods have difficulty and weak points in accuracy and selection of initial value. In this study, corrected inversion method which is able to solve the two difficulty and this method is applied to theoretical pier model to calculate tomography.

  • seismic crosshole tomography works applying borehole deviation correction were performed at a test site to detect a small cavity. Two correction methods were applied. The one is the constant distance correction which adds constant distance to surface borehole distance and the other is the constant angle correction which considers an angle between surface borehole location and bottom borehole location. After applying the corrections, the distortions of the image diminished while its resolution improved. Though the constant angle correction is the most appropriate correction method, the constant distance correction can delineate the small cavity sufficiently.

  • Measurements in two adjacent (about 1.5 m separation) boreholes reveal that there is a significant degree of variations in the width and property (permeability) of shear zones in the granitic rock. A high frequency (>10 kHz) cross-well seismic tomography was conducted to characterize the features of permeability distribution at the shear zones in the inter-well region. At the shear zones, the correlation between the permeability at the well location and the velocity pattern shown in the cross-well velocity tomogram suggests that a high resolution velocity tomogram may provide useful information for the shear zone characteristics, such as permeability, fracture density, width, and length.

  • 3D travel time tomography was conducted to characterize the subsuface structure in the valley area. In this study, an area($200m{\times}200m$), where borehole informations were available to aid in the interpretation, was covered with wide source/receiver coverage. In data acquisition, both hole to hole and reverse VSP array was employed. For the inversion, 3D seismic traveltime tomography algorithm based on Fresnel volume was implemented. When compared 3D velocity cube with the geological survey and drilling logs, both results were matched well. From this, we concluded that 3D seismic travel time tomography has enough potential to the field application.

  • Three processing strategies of seismic refraction data are tested in terms of velocity and depth profiles or structures for mapping of geological discontinuities: GRM(generalized reciprocal method), GLI(generalized linear inversion), Tomography. The test data used in this study are the shot gathers reconstructed by numerical modeling for the structures of 3 planar layers(horizontal, inclined), the buried vertical fracture zones, and vertical fault zones. Tomography is shown to be very efficient for mapping of more complicated tone such as vertical fault and buried fracture zones, whereas GRM and GLI can be useful for horizontal and/or inclined layers, probably on their bases of analysis of first arrivals in travel time curves.

  • EZTOMO is a crosswell seismic tomography software system. The system has capability of event picking, raytracing, inversion, error analysis, and visualization of the processing results. Waveform of the first arrival signal has been utilized to select the event of the first motion, and uncertainty measured in estimation of the first breaks has been utilized to improve the inversion process.

  • We developed a new algorithm for jointly inverting dc resistivity and seismic travel time tomography data based on the multiple constraints: (1) structural similarity based on cross-gradient, (2) correlation between two different material properties, and (3) a priori information on the material property distribution. Through the numerical experiments of surface dc resistivity and seismic refraction surveys, the performance of the proposed algorithm was demonstrated and the effects of different regularizations were analyzed.
