  • After the Gyeongju earthquake, school buildings were designated as earthquake shelters. However, the ratio of designed for seismic of domestic school buildings is only 23.2% in Korea, and it is necessary to secure the seismic safety of those. Therefore, in this paper, a target building was selected before the seismic design criteria was established and the seismic performance of the building was evaluated. After the evaluation, reinforcement of the building was carried out using seismic retrofit systems which was previously tested. For this purpose, the evaluation was carried out using OpenSees program and the reliability of the seismic retrofit systems was also verified. In this way, we can more precisely reproduce the response of the building in case of actual earthquake and predict damage of the earthquake in the future.

  • This study aims to optimize the cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank (CAFB) using El-Centro seismic waveforms and test its performance through a shaking table test on a two-span bridge model. In the process of optimizing the CAFB, El-Centro seismic waveforms were used for the purpose of evaluating how they would affect the optimizing process. Next, the optimized CAFB was embedded in the developed wireless-based intelligent data acquisition (IDAQ) system to enable response measurement in real-time. For its performance evaluation to obtain a seismic response in real-time using the optimized CAFB, a two-span bridge (model structures) was installed in a large shaking table, and a seismic response experiment was carried out on it with El-Centro seismic waveforms. The CAFB optimized in this experiment was able to obtain the seismic response in real-time by compressing it using the embedded wireless-based IDAQ system while the obtained compressed signals were compared with the original signal (un-compressed signal). The results of the experiment showed that the compressed signals were superior to the raw signal in response performance, as well as in data compression effect. They also proved that the CAFB was able to compress response signals effectively in real-time even under seismic conditions. Therefore, this paper established that the CAFB optimized by being embedded in the wireless-based IDAQ system was an economical and efficient data compression sensing technology for measuring and monitoring the seismic response in real-time from structures based on the wireless sensor networks (WSNs).

  • In this study, it was performed that the seismic response analysis using long period earthquake wave and short period earthquake wave on dynamic behavior of concrete gravity dam. The results showed that if the same magnitude earthquake waves acted on concrete dam, the maximum displacement and stress at dam crest of long period wave(0funato wave) were about 30 % larger than those of short period wave(Hachinohe wave). And the response acceleration of dam crest was amplified about 5 times in long period earthquake wave and about 3 times in short period earthquake wave.

  • Seismic design codes developed taking into account the strong earthquakes may result in unnecessary economical loss in the low seismic area, and the importance of the performance based design considering the soil-structure interaction is recognized for the reasonable seismic design. In this study. elastic and inelastic seismic response analyses of a single degree of freedom system on the soft soil layer were performed considering the nonlinearity of the soil for the 1 weak earthquakes scaled to the nominal peak accelerations of 0.07g and 0.11g. The seismic response analyses were performed in one step applying the earthquake motions to the bedrock, utilizing a pseudo 3-D dynamic analysis software of the soil-structure system. The study results indicated that seismic response spectra of a system assuming the rigid base or the linear soil layer does not represent the true behavior of a structure-soil system, and it is necessary to take into account the nonlinear soil-structure interaction effects and to perform the performance based seismic design for the various soil layers, having different characteristics, rather than to follow the routine design procedures specified in the design codes for the reasonable seismic design. The nonlinearity of the soft soil excited with the weak seismic motions also affected significantly on the elastic and inelastic seismic response spectra of a system due to the nonlinear soil amplification of the earthquake motions, and it was pronounced especially for the elastic response spectra.

  • In this study, a ground motion response spectrum for the seismic risk assessment of low and intermediate level radioactive waste repositories was developed. For the development of the ground motion response spectrum, a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) was performed. Through the performance of a PSHA, a seismic hazard curve which was based on a seismic bed rock was developed. A uniform hazard spectrum was determined by using a developed seismic hazard curve. Artificial seismic motions were developed based on the uniform hazard spectrum. A seismic response analysis was performed on the developed artificial seismic motion. Finally, an evaluation response spectrum for the seismic risk assessment analysis of low and intermediate level radioactive waste repositories was developed.

  • In this paper, the seismic analysis and the modeling techniques have been introduced for seismic performances assessment, when seismic isolation bearings are applied to a real bridge. Nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out using finite element analysis program. El Centro earthquake(1940, N00W) used as earthquake ground excitations. The seismic response of seismically isolated bridge is compared with that of a bridge using conventional Pot Bearings, after obtaining the displacements of the deck, the deformations of the piers, shear forces and moments of the bottoms of the piers. The analytical analysis results show that seismic isolation bearing, especially seismic isolation bearings with sliding mechanism, could reduce earthquake forces.

  • This paper is to investigate the potentials of the elastic seismic design of twisted high-rise steel diagrid frame buildings in the strong wind and moderate/low seismicity regions. First, the prototypes of high-rise steel diagrid frames with architectural plans that have a twist angle of 0 (regular-shaped), 1, and 2 degrees were designed to resist wind. Then, the effects of the twist angle on the estimated quantities and structural redundancies of the diagrid frames were examined. Second, the seismic performance of the wind-designed prototype buildings under a low seismicity was evaluated. The response spectrum analysis was conducted for the service level earthquake (SLE) having 43-year return period and the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) having 2475-year return period. The evaluation resulted that the twisted high-rise steel diagrid frames resisted the service level earthquake elastically and most of their diagrid members remained elastic even under the maximum considered earthquake.

  • Stochastic and an empirical Green's function (EGF) methods are preliminarily applied to simulate strong ground motions (SGMs) at seismic stations within nuclear power plant (NPP) sites in South Korea by an assumed large earthquake with MW6.5 (scenario earthquake) on the causative fault of the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake with MW5.5 (mainshock). In the stochastic method, a ratio of spectral amplitudes of observed and simulated waveforms for the mainshock is assumed to be an adjustment factor. In the EGF method, SGMs by the mainshock are simulated assuming SGMs by the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake with MW5.0 (foreshock) as the EGF. To simulate SGMs by the scenario earthquake, a ratio of fault length to width is assumed to be 2:1 in the stochastic method, and SGMs by the mainshock are assumed to be EGF in the EGF method. The results are similar based on a bias of the simulated response spectra by the two methods, and the simulated response spectra by the two methods exceeded commonly standard design response spectra anchored at 0.3 g of NPP sites slightly at a frequency band above 4 Hz, but considerable attention to interpretation is required since it is an indirect comparison.

  • The characteristics of harmonic phase angles and phase angle differences contained in earthquake ground motions such as El Centre 1940 NS, Taft1 1952 NS, Hachinohe 1968 NS and Mexico 1985 are figured, which have been mostly overlooked in contrast with the importance placed on harmonic amplitudes. Recently, performance based design method is used for seismic design and seismic retrofitting, which needs nonlinear response analysis, there must be earthquake ground accelerations which contain the phase angle, the phase angle difference and energy input spectrum characteristics of the zone considered to be constructed building structures. To make clear the importance of phase angle differences, responses of 4 recorded earthquake ground motions, 4-earthquake ground motions normalized by 110 gal and 4 artificial earthquake motions compatible to the seismic building code of Korea are compared.
