  • In the seismic design the pile foundation system of the buildings generally have been modeled to have a fixed end for its convenience and conservativeness. But it is necessary to consider the soil-structure interaction for more reliable design. In this study, the framed tube building and brace tube building with pile foundation system under earthquake were analyzed considering soil-structural interaction by 3 pile foundation modeling methods; fixed-end model, 6 springs model and p-y springs model. And 2 soil conditions were used in analysis. For each cases, displacements, drifts, maximum stress, periods and 1st mode mass participation ratios were compared.

  • During an earthquake, soils filter and send out the shaking to the building and simultaneously it has the role of bearing the building vibrations and transmitting them back to the ground. In other words, the ground and the building interact with each other. Hence, soil-structure interaction (SSI) is a key parameter that affects the performance of buildings during the earthquakes and is worth to be taken into consideration. Columns are one of the most crucial elements in RC buildings that play an important role in stability of the building and must be able to dissipate energy under seismic loads. Recent earthquakes showed that formation of plastic hinges in columns is still possible as a result of strong ground motion, despite the application of strong column-weak beam concept, as recommended by various design codes. Energy is dissipated through the plastic deformation of specific zones at the end of a member without affecting the rest of the structure. The formation of a plastic hinge in an RC column in regions that experience inelastic actions depends on the column details as well as soil-structure interaction (SSI). In this paper, 854 different scenarios have been analyzed by inelastic time-history analyses to predict the nonlinear behavior of RC columns considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The effects of axial load, height over depth ratio, main period of soil and structure as well as different characteristics of earthquakes, are evaluated analytically by finite element methods and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. Findings from this study provide a simple expression to estimate plastic hinge length of RC columns including soil-structure interaction.

  • When some enormous earthquake hazards broke out in the neighboring Japan and Taiwan, many Korean earthquake engineers thought that seismic guidelines must be adjusted safely and economically to consider the moderate earthquake characteristics. In the present aseismic guideline for liquefaction potential assessment, a simplified method using SPT-N value and a detail method based on the dynamic lab-tests were introduced. However, it is said that these methods based on the equivalent stress concept to simplify an irregular earthquake are not reliable to simulate the kaleidoscopical characteristics of earthquake loading correctly. Especially, even though various data from the dynamic lab-test can be obtained, only two data, a maximum cyclic load and a number of cycle at an initial liquefaction are used to determine the soil resistance strength in the detailed method. In this study, a new assessment of liquefaction potential is proposed and verified. In the proposed assessment, various data from dynamic lab-tests are used to determine the unique soil resistance characteristic and a site specific analysis is introduced to analyze the irregular earthquake time history itself. Also, it is found that the proposed assessment is reasonable because it is devised to reflect the changeable soil behavior under dynamic loadings resulted from the generation and development of excess pore water pressure.

  • In the preceding study, the possibility of liquefaction according to the liquefaction evaluation methods was predicted in Saemangeum reclamation area for tide embankment, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The risk of liquefaction was also expected when foundations and underground structures were built at a depth within 10m below ground surface, and meticulous care was required in the design of them in the future. This study considered the effect of the embedded depth for foundation design regarding liquefaction based on the various earthquake data from literatures. On the basis of the results of this study, an alternative consideration in foundation design for liquefaction was proposed for the Saemangeum area.

  • As a type of semi-rigid connection, the top and seat angle connections are popular in current structures owing to their good cyclic performance and simple erection. However, their stiffness and load bearing capacity are relatively insufficient. This study proposes two strengthening methods to further increase the stiffness and strength of bolted-angle joints while maintaining satisfactory energy dissipation capacity (EDC) and ductility. Cyclic loading tests were conducted on six joint specimens with different strengthened angle components. Based on the test results, the influence of the following important factors on the cyclic behavior of steel joint specimens was investigated: the position of the rib stiffeners (edge rib stiffeners and middle rib stiffener), steel strength grade of rib stiffeners (Q345 and Q690), and additional stiffeners or not. In addition, the finite element models of these specimens were built and validated through a comparison of experimental and numerical results. The stiffness and bearing capacity of the bolted-angle joints could be improved significantly by utilizing the novel strengthened joints proposed in this study. Moreover, this can be achieved with almost no increase in the amount of steel required, and the EDC of this joint could also satisfy the requirements of seismic codes from various countries.

  • Many school buildings are vulnerable to earthquakes because they were built before mandatory seismic design was applied. This study uses machine learning to develop an algorithm that rapidly constructs an optimal reinforcement scheme with simple information for non-ductile reinforced concrete school buildings built according to standard design drawings in the 1980s. We utilize a decision tree (DT) model that can conservatively predict the failure type of reinforced concrete columns through machine learning that rapidly determines the failure type of reinforced concrete columns with simple information, and through this, a methodology is developed to construct an optimal reinforcement scheme for the confinement ratio (CR) for ductility enhancement and the stiffness ratio (SR) for stiffness enhancement. By examining the failure types of columns according to changes in confinement ratio and stiffness ratio, we propose a retrofit scheme for school buildings with masonry walls and present the maximum applicable stiffness ratio and the allowable range of stiffness ratio increase for the minimum and maximum values of confinement ratio. This retrofit scheme construction methodology allows for faster construction than existing analysis methods.

  • In this study, the cyclic behavior of Bar Damper (BD) and its effect on the seismic performance of the steel frame was investigated using numerical and analytical methods. Initially, the calibrated model was used to conduct parametric studies on the cyclic behavior of the damper. The purpose of parametric studies was to provide equations for calculating effective and elastic stiffness, ultimate strength, and energy dissipation using its diameter and height. The impact of BD on the steel frame was examined in the second section of the research. In this section, studies were conducted using pushover analysis to investigate the impact of BD on the elastic stiffness, energy absorption, ductility, and strength of the frame. The results demonstrated that increasing the height of the BDs resulted in higher energy dissipation. However, reducing the height and increasing the diameter increased effective stiffness, yield strength, and elastic stiffness. The EVDR results showed that the diameter of the damper has a negligible effect on it, and its value increases with the decrease in height. In the best case, the addition of BD causes a 23% increase in energy dissipation and a 60% increase in frame ductility.

  • The propagation of elastic waves in soil is crucial in geotechnical and seismic engineering. Although soil is often assumed homogeneous, natural geomaterials like soil and rock possess inherent heterogeneity. This study uses FLAC 2D finite difference software to simulate wave propagation under different spatial variability parameters. Random field models and Monte Carlo methods were employed to generate random field data for soil parameters, reflecting the actual variability of soil. The study analyzes the effects of different correlation lengths, variability parameters, and saturation on the propagation characteristics of elastic waves, including wave velocity, amplitude attenuation, and waveform changes. Results show that wave propagation is most sensitive to elastic modulus variability, followed by porosity, while Poisson's ratio has minimal impact. Due to the variability of the elastic modulus, wave propagation time increases with increasing variability coefficient and correlation length. The peak amplitude decreases significantly, and the attenuation mean decreases while the variability of attenuation increases with increasing variability coefficient. Additionally, increasing soil saturation in heterogeneous soils leads to a decrease in wave velocity and an increase in attenuation. These findings contribute to a better understanding of elastic wave propagation in heterogeneous soils and improving design reliability.

  • Normal moveout correction is one of the main procedures of seismic reflection data processing and a crucial pre-processing step for AVO analysis. Unfortunately, stretch phenomenon, which is the intrinsic problem of NMO correction, degrades the quality of stack section and reliability of AVO analysis. Although muting is applied to resolve this problem, it makes far-offset traces more useful to develop an advanced NMO correction technique without stretch. In this paper, easy and detailed explanations are provided on the definition and methodology of NMO correction, and then the cause of stretch is explained with its characteristics. A graphical explanation for NMO correction is given for the intuitive understanding of stretch phenomenon. Additionally, the theoretical formulation is derived to quantitatively understand the NMO correction. Through explaining the muting process to remove NMO stretch, the limitations of conventional methods are investigated and the need for a new resolution comes to discussion. We describe a stretch-free NMO correction based on inverse theory among many different stretch-free NMO corrections. Finally, the stretch-free NMO correction is verified through synthetic example and real data.
