Newly introduced two lines of apios (Apios americana Medikus, red-vine and green-vine) were grown in Jeju island, to clarify their growth and production characteristics as well as to develope as a new edible crops in Korea. Both lines bloomed but did not develop to pod and seed. The red-viny line showed the habit of more early growth and maturity compared with green-viny line. Fresh tuber yields per 10a harvested in late November ranged from about 500kg to 800kg as according to the lines and cultural condition. Fresh tuber yield of red-viny line was relatively greater than that of green-viny line, mainly due to their higher tuber number per plant. Among the planting dates(April 1, April 16 and May 1) of seed tubes, highest tuber yield was obtained on May 16 planting. And the stacking cultivation culture was better than non-stacking cultivation in respect of tuber yield and disease avoidance. These results indicate that apios can produce in Jeju island, and in order to extend its cultivation to farmers it will be needed to develope some cultivars with high yields as well as labor-saving cultivation methods.

This study was carried out to find the effects of seed tuber position and number of nodes on growth of Saururus chinensis Baill. at experimental field of Chungbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration from 1996 to 1997. Seed tubers were divided into upper, middle and lower parts, and they were prepared to 1-, 2-, 3-node cuttings in each. Percentage of sprouting in planting of middle part was highest of 92%, and the percent increased by increasing the number of nodes. Growth of shoot and root tuber was the most favorable with planting of 3-node cuttings of middle part, and leaf area index (LAI) was highest of 3.10 in the same treatment. Dry matter weight and percentage of root tuber were highest of $821g/m^2$ and 28 % with planting of 3-node cuttings of middle part. Yield of dry leaf and root tuber were highest of 272kg/10a and 821kg/10a with planting of 3-node cuttings of middle part.

A glasshous experiment was carried out in 2002 to evaluate growth differences between two wick types, and to determine the optimum number of wicks in a wick-based hydroponics for production of 'Dejima' seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.). The six minitubers ($7.0{\pm}0.2g$/tuber) produced through aeroponics were planted in a polystyrene box (51 cm long $\times$ 31 cm wide $\times$ 20 cm high) containing growth medium (perlite+peatmoss 1:2, v/v mixtures). Before the boxes were filled with the medium, 6 wicks per box were vertically and 2 to 10 wicks were horizontally installed, respectively, at the bottom of the boxes through holes. Comparing with 6 vertical wick treatment, 6 horizontal wick treatment increased the number of tubers per plant, but decreased average tuber weight. Yield of tubers greater than 5 g (seed potatoes) was not significantly affected by wick type. As the number of the horizontal wicks per box was increased from 2 to 6, the number of seed potatoes increased from 2.8 to 8.0/plant and then leveled off. Average tuber weight increased with increasing the number of the wicks up to 8 and then leveled off. As the number of the wicks per box was increased from 2 to 6, seed potato yield increased from 1.81 to 6.59 kg/$m^2$ and then slowly increased up to 10 wicks per box, reaching 12.9 kg/$m^2$. The results indicate that installing 8 wicks per box ($0.16m^2$) horizontally for the wick culture system in production of 'Dejima' seed potatoes is beneficial considering seed potato yield, cost of wicks, and convenient filling with medium.

In order to know the effect of planting date and cutting management on Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus truberosus L.) as a new forage or energy crop, JA tubes were planted from April 7 to June 27 with 20 day interval. Growth and yield could stay high as normal planting if tuber planting had been done until late May. The delayed planting after June caused deterioration of seed tuber, produced poor emergence and retarded growth. Previous harvested field did not need additional planting every spring because there were enough leftover tubers usually small size, less than 3gr., to provide a dense seedling establishment. This plot had too dense in population to adjust its spacing by thinning some of seedlings. One or two times cutting for forage or silage production reduced tuber yield very significantly. Therefore, it was not a good management to harvest for both forage and tuber production. Topping at 20cm from growing point in early July prevented from lodging and assured tuber yield.

The potato tuber is known as a rich source of essential nutrients, used throughout the world. Although potato-breeding programs share some priorities, the major objective is to increase the genetic potential for yield through breeding or to eliminate hazards that reduce yield. Glycoalkaloids, which are considered a serious hazard to human health, accumulate naturally in potatoes during growth, harvesting, transportation, and storage. Here, we used the AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) and GGE (Genotype main effect and genotype by environment interaction) biplot model, to evaluate tuber yield stability and glycoalkaloid content in six potato cultivars across three locations during 2012/2013. The environment on tuber yield had the greatest effect and accounted for 33.0% of the total sum squares; genotypes accounted for 3.8% and $G{\times}E$ interaction accounted for 11.1% which is the nest highest contribution. Conversely, the genotype on glycoalkaloid had the greatest effect and accounted for 82.4% of the total sum squares), whereas environment and $G{\times}E$ effects on this trait accounted for only 0.4% and 3.7%, respectively. Furthermore, potato genotype 'Superior', which covers most of the cultivated area, exhibited high yield performance with stability. 'Goun', which showed lower glycoalkaloid content, was the most suitable and desirable genotype. Results showed that, while tuber yield was more affected by the environment, glycoalkaloid content was more dependent on genotype. Further, the use of the AMMI and GGE biplot model generated more interactive visuals, facilitated the identification of superior genotypes, and suggested decisions on a variety of recommendations for specific environments.

In Korea, potatoes have served as a side dish, but their role as snacks, such as chips or French fries, has recently gained traction. While there is a high demand for processing potatoes, there remains a dearth of research on the impact of double cropping, particularly during autumn, on processing quality. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effects of different spring potato cultivation periods on growth, yield, and processing quality during autumn cultivation. Following spring planting, harvest was carried out four times: 70 days, 80 days, 90 days, and 100 days. Subsequently, autumn cultivation was carried out in Gangneung and Seocheon regions using these seed potatoes. Results showed an increase in above-ground emergence rate with shorter spring growing period. When seed potatoes with a spring cultivation period of 80 and 90 days were grown in the autumn in the Gangneung region, the stem length was 47.2 to 48.9, which was greater than that of other treatments. However, stem number and leaf color (SPAD) showed no significant differences across cultivation periods. The number of tubers, tuber weight, yield, and marketable yield did not vary significantly with cultivation periods but described clear cultivar dependent differences. The tuber weight of the Saebong cultivar in Gangneung and the Eunseon cultivar in Seocheon was superior. The starch content peaked at 7.9% when seed potatoes grown for 80 days in the spring were harvested after autumn cultivation in the Gangneung region, but there was no significant differences in the Seocheon region. Glucose content showed a clear difference depending on the cultivation period, increasing with longer spring cultivation period during autumn cultivation. In conclusion, as a result of the effect of the spring potato cultivation period on the growth, yield, and processing quality of tubers when cultivating potatoes in double-cropping, the differences depending on the cultivation period were insignificant, while cultivar-based disparities were pronounced. The Eunseon cultivar exhibited robust above-ground growth and yield, while the Saebong cultivar demonstrated excellent processing quality.

Jayoung was bred within the potato breeding program of Highland Agriculture Research Center (HARC), National Institute of Crop Science. It was originated from a cross made between Atlantic as a female and AG34314 as a male parent in 2003. Jayoung was evaluated as a clone number Daegwan 1-104 for the growth and tuber characteristics, yielding ability, and resistance to major potato diseases in the regional yield trials from 2006 to 2007. Finally, this clone was renamed as Jayoung and was presented to Korean Seed & Variety Service in 2007 for registration as a new potato cultivar. Jayoung has a oval shape, shallow eye depth, dark purple skinned and fleshed tuber characteristics. Its mean tuber yields from the regional yield trials was 37.3 MT/ha, and it showed the highest yield in spring cropping. Jayoung showed high resistance to both common scab (Streptomyces scabies) and potato leaf roll virus (PLRV), however it was susceptible to late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The dry matter content of Jayoung was fairy high 20.3%, therefore it is suitable for both chip processing and table usage. Its anthocyanin content was the highest in autumn cropping as 43.7 mg/100 g fresh weight and its mean anthocyanin content was 4.7 times higher than that of Jasim.
