Analysis of one sinkhole, the Dodgeville sinkhole, developed in Ordovician dolostones in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin in the Upper Midwest'd Driftless Area reveals homogenous clayey sediment fills reflecting a range of dissolutional processes during the Quaternary or Pre-Quaternary. Granulometric analysis, graphical moments statistics, carbonate minerals, ana sand grain lithology were used to differentiate sinkhole sediment sources and modes of accumulation. Sediments in the dolostone sinkholes developed by dissolution. Sediments contain two major types of sediments : residual redish clay( autogenic sediments) and aeolian silt (allogenic sediments). The massive clay is generated from the weathered dolostone bedrocks as a in situ materials. The loessial silt is mostly derived from transportation of the surrounding surface materials, with some evidences of penetrated deposition. Unlike the collapsed sandstone sinkholes (Oh et al., 1993), dolostone sinkholes reveal homogenous, autogenic clay materials, and a geochemical composition indicative of in situ autogenic karstification. Dolostone sinkhole si1ts (26.9%) and sands (34.9%) are derived from weathered Plattevi1le-Galena dolostones, and contain high carbonate(37.5%), chert (57.2%) and lead ore (3%). Graphical moments statistics for sorting, skewness, and kurtosis indicate that sand grains from dolostones were derived entirely from local bedrock by in situ dissolution. Upper sinkhole sediments are pedagogically very young as carbonate is unleashed. Materials of the sinkhole sediment are definitely inherited from internal dolostones by dissolution and weathering, because not only a granulomatric comparison of dolostone and sandstone sediments demonstrates that they have heterogeneous paticle size distributions, but also 1ithologic analyses displays they differ completely.

Bidirectional transport trend using the sediment-transport path model was identified in the two areas, sand ridge area and tidal mudflat in Garolim Bay, which is located in the mid-western coast of Korean Peninsular. This model exhibits the two-dimensional view of clear sediment transport trend based on data of changes in sediment statistics such as mean, sorting, and skewness, Garolim Bay was selected to test for the sediment-transport path model developed by McLaren and Bowles [1985]. Line-S, a typical tidal mudflat and representative of the Garolim Bay tidal flats, is well tested by this model, showing a clear seasonal change and coarsening-trend seaward (case C). This indicates that strong ebb currents carried relatively coarser sediments seaward with respect to high energy regime. Seasonally, this energy regime slowly decreases toward the summer in contrast with an increase of energy regime of flood tides, carrying coarser sediments landward (case C) in the summer. However, the Line-D area does not show consistent transport trend with respect to time-series. Separated and scattered events show fining trend landward (case B) in the sand ridge itself. The finining-trend (case B) either seaward and landward is not chiefly important in both the entire Line-D area and sand ridge itself. Also, the coarsening-Trend (case C) landward is not significant in the sand ridge itself. Consequently, in reality, the selection of suitable and representative locations are very important to fit with this model.
In this study, changing characteristics of bed materials downstream of Daecheong Dam by flushing flow was investigated. Flushing flow affected the downstream environment in such a way that the mean diameter of bed material was increased and the standard deviation was decreased. The vertical sorting of bed materials composed of mixed sediment in the sediment box was observed. The surface layer was composed of gravels, and uniform sand material was buried below it. Relative fractions (Di/D50) of the bed material trapped in the box was nearly 1.0 for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo gauging station, and was between two values on the bed surface before and after the flushing flow at Bugang gauging station. Ratio of driving force to resisting force for each fraction ($\tau_i^*$) with the faction size maintained constant for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo station. At Bugang station, however, it was rapidly decreased. It means that pavement of the surface layer of bed material at Bugang station was developed, with the sediment particles moving downstream uniformly by flushing flow.

To study the characters of surface sediment and to describe the seasonal depositional environment as a result of sedimentation process off Byun-San Peninsula, a total 61 samples of surface sediment (32 samples in summer; 29 samples in winter) were collected and analysed. A digitized depth data from sea chart and echosounding profiles along five trans-sections were helpful for understanding the morphological factors. The types classified by the characters of surface sediment are type I (sand, S), type II (silty sand, zS), and type ill (sandy silt, sZ). Mean grain size varies from 2.11 to 7.81 ${\Phi}$. The positive-skewness shows the typical tide-dominated environment. The sediment type of the northwestern stations is medium sand and the sorting value is 0.5~1.4 ${\Phi}$ of well/moderately sorted. Meanwhile, other stations are composed of muddy sands and sandy muds transported from rivers and offshore. These sediment types toward inshore change gradually from silty sand to sandy silt. According to the C/M diagram, there are three major transport modes of sediment: bed load (Mode A), graded suspension (Mode B), and suspension (Mode C), correlating with north-eastern sandy area, middle part of silty-sand area, and southern sandy-silt area, respectively. The result of Principal Component Analysis shows also similar pattern of sediment types. In result, sediment texture of type III tends to be finer and more poorly-sorted than that of type II and sediment facies are correlateed with sedimentation process.

Grain size analysis was conducted for a total of 402 surface sediments collected from 67 sites along three (upper, middle, and lower) transects corresponding to the high-, mid-, and low-intertidal zone of beach on the Sinjado, Nakdong River estuary in Nov. 2005 and May 2006. Sinja-do beach sediments showed uni-modal grain size distributions, in which the mode of $3.0{\phi}$ was dominant in 2005 whereas the mode of $2.5{\phi}$ in 2006. This coarsening trend was more remarkable in the western side of beach as well as in the mid- and low-intertidal zone. In this study, we focused on investigating characteristics of sediment size changes on the basis of transect data that differ in tidal elevation. For this purpose, a statistical test was applied for transect by transect comparison of grain size parameters such as mean, sorting, and skewness. Mean values between middle and lower transect, sorting values between upper and lower transect, and skewness values over the beach reflected statistically significant temporal changes. Also, mean and skewness parameters showed an inverse relationship which was more stronger in 2006 than in 2005. Temporal changes in Sinja-do beach sediments resulted in decrease of mean and sorting values but increase of skewness values, intensifying the inverse relationship between mean and skewness parameters.

The characteristics and burial ages of sand sediments on the Jiduri coast in Daechung-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon were investigated. Daecheong Island is the area where the characteristics of the rocky coast and sand coast are shown. Various studies have been conducted on the Okjukdong sand dune that appears in the north of the island. However, there has been no study on the sandy sedimentary topography of the Jiduri and Moraewul area in the south. The sandy sedimentary terrain of Jiduri is divided into sandy beaches, sand dunes and sand deposits along the slope including climbing dune. Overall, the depth of sandy sediments in Jiduri is not deep. The characteristics of sandy sediments and burial ages were investigated at an elevation of about 23 m above sea level at the back of Jiduli Beach and 46 m above sea level at the ridge line between Jiduri and Moraewol. From the Jiduri coast to the hillside behind, the average grain size decreases and the sorting becomes better as it moves from the intertidal zone to the beach and the foredune. This indicates the selective sand transport by the wind and can be judged by the terrain formed under the current sedimentation environment. The average grain size at the upper part of the section of JD-1 (elevation of about 23m MSL) was $1.6918{\varphi}$ of medium sand. The sorting was $0.4584{\varphi}$, skewness was -1.0491 and kurtosis was -1.2411, respectively. Particularly, the average particle size of the crosssection issomewhat uniform, but the color of the constituent material changes from brown to black. In the case of JD-2 (about 46 m MSL), the mean grain size of the section was $1.7943{\varphi}$, the sorting was 0.4931, the skewness was -1.1163, and the kurtosis was 1.2133. On the other hand, the brown and black layers of JD-1 exhibited a burial age of $0.1{\pm}0.0ka$ and the JD-2 had a burial age of $0.7{\pm}0.0ka$.
The Seocheon and Yubu Island mudflats in Geum Estuary are important stopover sites for migratory birds as energy supplementation area in the East Asia-Australasian Flyway. Benthic invertebrates in the tidal flats are important food resources for the migratory birds. In other words, benthic invertebrates in the tidal flats play an important ecological role in energy flow. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between benthic invertebrate assemblages and environmental factors in Seocheon and Yubudo tidal flats in the Geum Estuary. As a result of the benthic invertebrate assemblage during the fall migration season, the total species number was 147, density and biomass were $1,772{\pm}1,342individuals/m^2$ and $445.1{\pm}807.6g/m^2$, respectively. Based on the appearance species and the density data, the result of analysis of mutual similarity among sampling sites was divided into two groups. Group A was the Macrophthalmus-Heteromastus community and Group B was the Spio-Urothoe-Mandibulophoxus community. Group B showed higher mean species number, density and biomass than Group A. The BIO-ENV analysis showed that the benthic invertebrate assemblages were most affected by the combination of sand content % and sediment sorting (${\rho}=0.500$). The variables of significant relationship with species number and biomass were sediment sorting (p=0.015) and the pore water DO(Dissolved Oxygen, p=0.003) in sediment, respectively.
Grain size analysis have been made for the carbonate-detrital mixed sediments on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. The detrital components are well-sorted with mean grain size between 2-3 phi. The detrital components are thought to be deposited in the beach environment during the glacial times when the sea level was low, representing typical 'relict' sediments. Most of the carbonate components consist of shell fragments, and are deeply weathered. They are also interpreted as the relict components that were deposited in the shallow marine environment. The carbonate fraction are coarser-grained and poorly sorted compared to the detrital component. The carbonate components are thought to have experienced the continuous environmental control of fragmentation and selective size sorting after the deposition.
Coastal sediments collected near the Youngkwang Nuclear Power Plant were analysed for major(Al$_2$O$^_3$, Fe$^_2$O$^_3$, MgO, CaO, Na$^_2$O, K$^_2$O, TiO$^_2$, MnO), trace (Ba, Sr, V, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) metal, and P$^_2$O$^_5$ contents. The composition of bulk metals from most stations fits within the range as those in the average crustal and sedimentary rocks, suggesting that the anthropogenic perturbation of these components is insignificant. The abundance and distribution of total contents for the majority of metals in the surface sediment could be explained by the grain size and were associated with mud (<63 ${\mu}$m) contents. However, distributions of Ca, K, Sr and Ba did not have any significant association with the sediment grain size. This may be due to the geochemical coherence among these metals in certain minerals abundant in coarse grained fractions. The distribution of Pb appears to be partly affected by the contribution from aerosol fallout. Using the R'-mode factor analysis, we show that the variance of the metal contents could be explained by four factors which account for 93.7% of the total variance. It appears that texturally controlled and/or sorting factors influenced by fine fraction are the most dominant factors which determine the relative abundance and distribution of metals in the study area.
This study is to compare differences in the depositional environments of natural beaches with those of beaches developed with artificial structures in the East Coast of Korea. Naksan-Osan beaches were selected for the examination of natural beaches and Anmok-Yumjun beaches for that of developed beaches. The study was performed on the foreshores and backshores of the selected beaches, and was based on the field research during the flood period of year 2004 and the dry period of year 2005. In Naksan-Osan beaches, pain size is fuel and sorting is better from northern coast to southern coast. Furthermore, sediment undergoes changes regularly and seasonal variations are small. But in Anmok-Yumjun beaches, grain size is coarser and sorting is worse than in Naksan-Osan beaches, showing irregular tendencies. The characteristic features of the two beaches would be effected by longshore currents which change along the type of coast line and have an effect on sediment. Especially, long shore currents interrupted by artificial structures in Anmok-Yumjun beaches may cause sedimental environment changes. In Anmok-Yumjun beaches, harbor expansions will be continued, and thus more changes are expected to occur in the beaches.
