  • A hydraulic characteristics in the surf zone such as wave breaking points, wave set-down, wave set-up, wave-induced currents and run-up heights are studied using the SWASH model during Typhoon NAKRI(1412) in Haeundae Beach. Incident wave conditions is obtained from one-hourly observed wave data by KHOA and irregular wave by JONSWAP spectrum is given as an open boundary condition in the model. A Wave-induced current patterns by the SWASH model is compared with the observed currents and sediment flux patterns in that areas, the calculated maximum wave run-up heights in the model is compared with the video monitoring data, the empirical formula by Stockdon et al. and Mase. A dominant longshore currents toward the east of the beach appears due to the effect of incident wave direction and the geographical features and some rip currents occurs at the central part of the beach. The maximum wave run-up height(1.15 m) by the SWASH model shows a similar pattern with the video monitoring data(1.26 m) and the magnitude shows a similar result(1.33m) by Stockdon et al.

  • Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection profiles collected from the Ulleung Basin reveals that the Quaternary sequence consists of four stratigraphic units separated by erosional unconformities. Individual stratigraphic unit includes eighteen mass transport deposits which are variable in geometric characteristics and spatial distribution. Each mass transport deposit on the seismic profile is acoustically characterized by chaotic or transparent seismic facies, and shows wedge or lens-shaped external geometry. The mass transport deposits, which comprise a succession of stacked wedges, mainly occur on the southern slope, and their thickness gradually decreases toward the basin plain. The time structure map of erosional unconformities shows that a tectonic-induced structural high and troughs toward the northwest and northeast are developed at the central part of the basin. Based on the isochron map, the mass transport deposits, originated from southern part of the study area, transported to the basin plain and can be divided into two groups by the structural high. Consequently, the mass transport deposits within the Quaternary sequence in the Ulleung Basin are largely controlled by the large amounts of sediment supply, dissociation of gas hydrate during the lowstands, and central structural high.

  • In recent years, debris flow disaster has occurred in multiple locations between high and low mountainous areas simultaneously with a flooding disaster in urban areas caused by heavy and torrential rainfall due to the changing global climate and environment. As a result, these disasters frequently lead to large-scale destruction of infrastructures or individual properties and cause psychological harm or human death. In order to mitigate these disasters more effectively, it is necessary to investigate what causes the damage with an integrated model of both disasters at once. The objectives of this study are to analyze the mechanism of debris flow for real basin, to determine the PMP and run-off discharge due to the DAD analysis, and to estimate the influence range of debris flow for fan area according to the scenario. To analyse the characteristics of debris flow at the real basin, the parameters such as the deposition pattern, deposit thickness, approaching velocity, occurrence of sediment volume and travel length are estimated from DAD analysis. As a results, the peak time precipitation is estimated by 135 mm/hr as torrential rainfall and maximum total amount of rainfall is estimated by 544 mm as typhoon related rainfall.

  • We examined soil properties and provenance of loess-paleosol sequences at the Daebo Granite area of Buan, Jeonbuk Province, South Korea. The section consists of the surface layer, Layer 1(paleosol), Layer 2(loess), Layer 3(paleosol), Layer 4(loess), and Layer 5(paleosol), from top to bottom and thickness of the exposed section is approximately 280cm. The magnetic susceptibility values show the distinct variations between the loess- and the paleosol layer. Even though pH, ORP, water content, and soil hardness do not display the obvious differences in the section, the organic content indicates the variation similar to those of the magnetic susceptibility. In the respect of the soil colors measured under 3 conditions, although the variations of the wet soil color exceedingly reflect the difference of the layers, these variations are obscure in some points in the section due to the characteristics of the Munsell color system. Based on the geomorphological properties, sedimentary structure, the difference of the major element composition and the condrite-normalized rare earth element(REE) patterns showing the clear difference from the adjacent bedrocks and stream sediments and the similarity to those of the Chinese Loess Plateau, it is suggested that the section was formed by the material originated from the Chinese Loess Plateau and peripheral areas. However, because the material experienced the alteration after sedimentation under the environment of the sediment area, it has the properties different from the material in the provenance areas. This phenomenon may result in the climatic condition of Korea, especially in precipitation.

  • Total suspendid solid (TSS) of non point source pollutants in construction site are in higher concentration than others (BOD, COD etc). Also, the TSS concentration is very sensitive to the rainfall intensity in early stage of construction. There are two methods for treatment of non point source pollutants, which are temporary treatment facility and filtering one. But they have disadvantages. Temporary facility system has very low efficiency and filtering system consumes high energy and takes up large footprint. This study shows how prefabricated flocculation/coagulation system is developped to cover the above weakness and evaluation of the system performance in construction site. The prefabricated flocculation/coagulation system has very high treatment efficiency comparing with temporary and filtering system and takes small footprint. Therefore, it expects that the system leads to prevention of pollution near construction site and reduction of public grievance. Proper coagulant dosage and sludge circulation facility application, controlling the height of sludge interfacial are necessary to maximize the system efficiency.

  • Cheonan, Republic of Korea Navy patrol ship sank had happened by an unknown incident in the vicinity of Baekryeongdo southwest 1.6km(1 mile) sea at 21:45 on March 26, 2010. In terms of coastal researcher's point of view, it is meaningful to provide the sea condition of basic data necessary for search and rescue, more detailed predictions and inference data through the numerical simulations. Thus, in this study, we investigated the weather, wave, tide, tidal current, bottom soil conditions, and suspended sediment are investigated at the coast of Baekryeong-Daechung islands. And based on these data, the characteristics of sea conditions were analyzed. The tidal period at the time of incident corresponds between neap tide to mean tide. Until April 3-4 after March 26, the date of incident, the strongest velocity was progressed towards the spring tide. Thus, it was considered to be difficult to search and rescue operations. Also, because the ebb tide was in progress during 21:00 to 22:00, mass transport seems to be prevailed to the southeast. In particular, as the sudden turbulence due to the irregular topography existed was anticipated, we had carried out particle tracking experiment. From this experiment, depending on the situation of flow, the initial movement of the particles were directed to the southeast but it turned out moving towards the offshore based on the long term prediction. Through this result, it is considered that the scope of the search operation should be expanded towards the open sea.

  • BACKGROUND: Tributyltin chloride is among the most toxic compounds known for aquatic ecosystems. Microorganisms are responsible for removal of TBTCl. Nevertheless, only a limited number of marine bacteria were investigated for biodegradation of TBTCl in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: The number of TBTCl resistant bacteria ranged from $2.5{\times}10^3$ to $3.8{\times}10^3$ cfu/mL in the seawater, and ranged from $3.2{\times}10^5$ to $9.1{\times}10^5$ cfu/g in the surface sediment, respectively. The morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of TBTCl resistant bacteria were investigated by API 20NE and other tests. The most abundant species of TBTCl resistant bacteria were Vibrio spp. (19.2%), Bacillus spp. (16.2%), Aeromonas spp. (15.2%), and Pseudomonas spp. (13.1%), etc. Eleven TBTCl resistant isolates also had a resistance to heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn). Among them, isolate T7 showing the strong TBTCl-resistance was selected. This isolate was identified as the genus Pantoea by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and designated as Pantoea sp. T7. In addition, this bacterium was cultivated up to the growth of 50.7% after 60 hrs at TBTCl concentration of $500{\mu}M$. TBTCl-degrading activity of Pantoea sp. T7 was measured by GC-FPD analysis. As a result of biological TBTCl-degradation at TBTCl concentration of $100{\mu}M$, TBTCl-removal efficiency of Pantoeasp. T7 was 62.7% after 40 hrs. CONCLUSION(S): These results suggest that Pantoea sp. T7 is potentially useful for the bioremediation of TBT contamination.

  • To investigate the research state and characteristics of dinoflagellate cyst along the Korean coastal waters, this work analyzed 45 studies conducted in the Korean coasts and basin, the south of Jeju, East China Sea including some part of the Yellow Sea. It was found that the research on dinoflagellate cyst began in the later half of the 1980s in Korea, and that the research areas focused on eutrophied regions where a red tide occurred or on the seas where coastal development occurred. In other words, no research on the East Sea was found. In terms of research contents, there were various studies on analysis of cyst assemblage, tracking of the changes in marine environment like process of eutrophication, roles as a seed population in occurrence of a red tide, creation of cyst by use of sediment trip and tracking of its changes, morphological changes by the change of pH concentration in the hypoxia zone of eutrophied region, germination of a specific species, and other international-level studies. Species composition and cell density also varied in the Korean coastal waters. However, much research on dinoflagellate cyst in Korea is not systematic, and is fragmentary and individual and hencesuffers from great limitations. The research results so far have focused only on specific regions, and sporadic research had been conducted by specific research groups. Dinoflagellate cyst of surface sediments represents the accumulation index of pelagic environment in the sea and is a useful index to understand the marine environment efficiently. In conclusion, Korea requires organized human resources and collaborative research on dinoflagellate cyst which in turn should be considered as a component of marine ecosystem and as an essential aspect of marine biology.

  • To investigate the long-term variation of water qualities, we have daily monitored physio-chemical characteristics of surface water in the Geum River estuary from June 1996 to April 2004. We found that the water qualities were determined by three dominant factors : 1. fluvial input from Geum River ($28.3\%$), 2. chemical processes such as nitrification and phosphate addition originated from sediment resuspension and domestic sew- age input ($18.6\%$), 3. biological processes such as nutrient consumption by primary producers ($13.5\%$). The factor 1 (fluvial input) effectively affected the water quality of the estuary particularly during the normal or low river discharge. The factor 2 (chemical processes) and the factor 3 (biological processes) showed distinct seasonal differences due to their relative strengths of biological activities. The factor 3 was a governing parameter during the period of spring algal bloom in 2004. For the spring period, an empirical equation derived from the multi-regression analyses showed that the in-situ chlorophyll-a distributions in the estuarine water were successfully simulated by the phosphate concentrations and N/P ratios. Therefore we suggest that phosphate functions as a limiting factor for the primary productivity in the Geum River estuary for the dry season, especially during spring.

  • Grazing effects of a freshwater bivalve, Unio douglasiae, on both the phytoplankton communities of cold- and warm eutrophic lakes were examined in aquarium with sediment. The animal U. douglasiae used in the study was collected from the Gunsan (Jeonbuk), acclimatized in laboratory aquaria with washed sand from the mussel collection stream, and starved for $2{\sim}3$ days by the experiment. Grazing experiments were performed with the surface waters collected from Lake Ilgam (Seoul) in the cold period (March 31, 2008), and the warm period (June 19, 2008), respectively. Results clearly showed that the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and algal abundance were decreased with the increase of mussel-treated density and treated-time. At the same animal density, U. douglasiae effectively decreased the chl-a of cold-lake water (CW), compared to warm-lake water (WW). Increasing the mussel density, the filtering rate (or algal abundance) of the mussel on the CW gradually decreased, while those of WW did not increase or decrease. Major phytoplankton species Synedra ulna and Stephanodiscus hantzschii, and Scenedesmus ecornis in CW, and those of Tetraedron regulare and Pediastrum simplex in WW, were quickly decreased after the mussel stocking. Interestingly, cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in WW, not dominant species, were less removed. These results suggest that a freshwater bivalve U. douglasiae have a strategic potential to control dense hibernal diatom or green algae, rather than the cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic water.
