  • There are many different chemical pollutants that originate from atmospheric deposition and transportational activities along roads. This paper review the characteristics of heavy metal pollution, relationships between land use and pollutant load in urban area. Four land use areas in Seoul were selected for sampling and study with different characteristics during the period from April 1998 and February 2000. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments settling down in a gully pot to evaluate the contamination for heavy metals. The sediment samples from gully pots were characterized by the chemical extraction experiments. Sediments are characterized by very high concentrations of heavy metals, probably because of a long-term accumulation of vehicle- and industrial-related pollutants. The characteristics of heavy metal pollution show that each land use has different sources of contaminations. Mean Zn concentration in Yeouido and Junggu areas is 2-3 times higher than those in Dobonggu area. This suggests that Zn may be derived from the source of automobile traffic. The mean concentrations of Cu and Cr are very significantly high in Junggu and Gurogu areas and indicate that the industrial activities may contribute to the accumulation of Cu and Cr in sediments. The low Pb levels throughout the whole study areas in Seoul can be accounted for the use of unleaded gasoline since 1987.

  • Six surface sediments from two offshore transects of Ulsan and Gampo, on the southeastern margin of Korea were taken for sediment and foraminiferal analyses. Sedimentary processes are dominated by reworking and resedimentation from storms in the area off Ulsan and hemipelagic suspension settling in the area off Gampo. Eighty-four foraminiferal species were identified in total assemblages, including 33species of living populations and 9 species of planktonic foraminifera. The characteristics of foraminifera showed differences of offshore environments between Ulsan and Gampo. The number of living species, species diversity and equitability in Gampo offshore area had higher values than those in Ulsan offshore area. However, planktonic/benthic(P/B) ratio showed higher in the Ulsan offshore area. The species diversity indices and P/B ratio indicated that environmental stability and surface-ocean productivity in the Gampo offshore area were relatively higher than the Ulsan offshore area. The difference of species compositions is useful for interpreting the paleoenvironments in mud deposits of the southeastern margin of Korea.

  • This study analyzes the flood inundation in low agricultural area caused by rainfall during typhoon periods and how flood inundation areas should be affected. GIS techniques, HEC-HMS and HEC-GeoHMS were used for flood runoff, HEC-RAS was applied in water surface elevation analysis at each cross-section. RMA2, SED2D were applied for runoff characteristics of inundation areas and river bed change and distribution of sediment. As a result, velocity distribution was analyzed 2.6 m/s-3.4 m/s in flood inundation by water level increase. In the case of bed elevation change, most sediments were deposited to the parts that adjoin bank.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze various hydraulic characteristics using SMS (Surface Water Modelling System) RMA2 model. It is based on 2-D finite element method. River reaches (13.8km) from Gyeongan gauge station to the inlet of Paldang lake was selected. Finite element was made by RIMGIS Data, and the analysis of river-changes was operated by unsteady flow. The sediment concentration and bed change was simulated using SED2D model.

  • Based on the data interpretation on an artificial marsh built in Chun-cheon Lake, the study analyzed flow characteristics and found that flow was unstable due to sediment of natural river but the effect of artificial marsh was similar with that of river improvement works. Flow velocity in the section of artificial marsh was found to be 1m/sec. Therefore flow velocity was stable, which could contribute to improving water quality. A flow velocity as well as stream vector was improved.

  • Freshwater is a diverse and complex environment for fungi and provides several types of habitat including plant litter, sediment, and carcasses. We collected plant litter from the main stream and branch streams of Nakdong River, Sohancheon in Samcheok, and Geumoreum in Jeju. From several samples of plant litter, we isolated 8 fungal strains belonging to 4 Montagnulaceae species unrecorded in Korea: Paraconiothyrium archidendri, Paraphaeosphaeria sporulosa, Paraphaeosphaeria michotii, and Paraphaeosphaeria viridescens. These fungi were identified by phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and examination of morphological characteristics. Montagnulaceae is known as one of the families in Pleosporales and includes coniothyrium-like fungi. In this study, we described phylogenetic analysis and mycological characteristics of these species, and this is the first report of these taxa in Korea.

  • To investigate size distribution and metallic elements of surface sediments in Hampyong Bay, the southwestern coast of Korea, sedimentological and geochemical studies on surface sediments are carried out. The surface sediments of Hampyong Bay are classified into gravel, muddy sandy gravel, gravelly muddy sand, gravelly sandy mud, mud facies in accordance with areal characteristics. The coarse sediments are distributed on the subtidal zone along the main tidal channel and southeast intertidal flat of Hampyong Bay. On the other hand, the fine sediments are dominated in northeast and west intertidal flat of Hampyong Bay. Most metallic elements except for Ba in the sediments are closely interrelated with fine sediments and mutually with each element. Ba is maybe related with sandy sediments and inversely related with carbonate contents. Normalized by Al content, the sediment do not show any remarkable metal enrichments influenced by resonable artificial or environmental factors.

  • The subsidence characteristics of artificial reef in the unsteady flow such as tidal flow were investigated. The scour and subsidence characteristics were confirmed in the steady flow field, wave field and steady flow-wave field. In a main study, the interaction of Flow-Sediment Movement-Structure Behavior and scour.subsidence mechanism were discussed in the unsteady flow field and the unsteady flow-wave field. Most of all, the continuous artificial reef subsidence from the scour was occurred by periodic behavior of artificial reef. This behavior is result from the asymmetric ground, and is influenced by maximum velocity, duration time and direction of flow.

  • The speed of sound, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are measured around the center frequency 1 and 2 MHz in solid materials such as bone, sediment, rubber, and Lucite materials. Common and different characteristics of such materials in the sound speed, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are discussed. Ambiguities in estimating such acoustic characteristics we also addressed. Ultrasonic properties of the first and second kind waves are clarified for different materials. Discussions are concentrated on classes of sound speed, broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and correlations of sound speed and BUA with apparent density. New correlations of inverse sound speed square and BUA with apparent density are suggested.

  • The main goal of this study is to understand the effects of direct-runoff of chemistry and organic fertilizers which are adsorbing to sediment from farmland and non-point source discharge characteristics which are discharged to stream with soil erosion when rainfalls. pollutographs of TSS, BOD, COD, TN, and TP were measured for 10 rainfall events at watershed. EMC (Event Mean Concentration) were calculated for each rainfall event using quality and quantity measured. The result shows that the EMC ranges of 95% confidence intervals are 50.5-203 mg/L for TSS, 0.8-14.2 mg/L for $BOD_5$, 4.2-20.7 mg/L for $COD_{Mn}$, 0.2-0.5 mg/L for TP, 2.4-4.5 mg/L for TN, 1.36-3.04 mg/L for NO3--N, 0.13-0.42 mg/L for NH4+-N and 0.82-1.77 mg/L for TKN.
