In this study we estimated the carrying capacity of the southern intertidal zone of Kanghwa Island to evaluate the habitat quality for Curlews(Far Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis and Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata). Biomass of the macroinvertebrate(Macrophthalmus japonicus) was estimated by based on the spatial distribution of the sediment grain size using GIS tools. According to our analysis the southern intertidal zone of Kanghwa Island was able to support 11,767 individuals for 153 days in the Spring 2012 and 16,275 individuals for 122 days in the Autumn 2012. The proportion of mean population to the carrying capacity in the Spring and Autumn was 9.4% and 5.9%, respectively. These values are 2.8-6.3% smaller than those of the previous study held in 1993-94. For the conservation of the study area, more research and management is needed. And in further studies, diverse characteristics of the intertidal habitat should be considered in spatial analysis to have a precise estimate of the carrying capacity.

In this paper, based on the concept of solid particles' sediment problem the working formula determining the bowl length of a Decanter-type centrifuge were derived. Assuming that particles are uniformly distributed along the vertical line of the liquid inlet position, it was possible to derive a constant value k used for determining the bowl length. It was shown from the sample calculations that the bowl length should be increased as the particle size to be removed from the liquid is decreased. The length also should be increased for the same particle size as the bowl diameter is decreased. To help the engineers choose a reasonable bowl diameter, the statistical relationship between the bowl diameter and the capacity of the international products is obtained and presented.

The purpose of this study was to estimate of soil loss form hillslope using WEPP(Water Erosion Prediction Project) model. WEPP model was developed for predicting soil erosion and deposition, fundamentally based on soil erosion prediction technology. The model for predicting sediment yields from single storms was applied to a tested watershed. Surface runoff is calculated by kinematic wave equation and infiltration is based on the Green and Ampt equation. Governing equations for sediment continuity, detachment, deposition, shear stress in rills, and transport capacity are presented. Tested watershed has an area of 0.6ha, where the runoff and sediment data were collected. The relative error between predicted and measured runoff was $-16.6{\sim}2.2%$, peak runoff was $-15.6{\sim}2.2%$ and soil loss was $-23.9{\sim}356.5%$.

We investigated subsurface structures of the Bransfield Basin, the Antarctic with AUH (Autonomous Underwater Hydrophne) which was designed to record abyssal T-waves generated from submarine earthquakes. The data obtained from a multi-channel seismic survey and an AUH were used for this study. A seismic reflection method was applied to the multi-channel seismic survey data in order to identify bathymetry and sedimentary structures, and the signals recorded in the AUH were used to obtain deep structures as we applied a seismic refraction method. Even though we couldn’t investigate deeper and detailed structure in study area because of lack of Airgun’s capacity, the AUH showed possibilities for being used for a marine seismic survey. From this experiment, we decided the upper and lower sediment layer velocities, detected irregular basement topography probably caused by submarine volcanic/magmatic activities, and retrieved the velocity of the basement and the depth of the sediment layer/basement boundary.

I introduce the Flexible Dam Operation (FDO) and some of sediment control techniques In dams which are implemented as trials to avoid or reduce environmental impact of dams on the downstream reaches. The FDO is a dam management method to improve river environment in the downstream reaches by means of the flushing flow, the maintenance flow and so on utilizing a vacant portion of capacity for flood control without interrupting prime flood control function during the rainy/typhoon season. It Is suggested by the guideline of the FDO that EDO should be implemented regularly after the trial for about three years. The basic conception of the FDO is described here. The example of excavation of deposited sediments in check dams and placement of sand ana gravel immediately downstream of the dams and the example of coordinated sediment flushing are described as some of sediment control techniques in dams. Now they are at the stage of experiment and trial. Therefore, it is important to increase examples and establish the technical methodology and the environmental evaluation method for them.
Accumulation of sediment within pipelines, manholes, and other components of urban sewer systems can have a bad influence on sewerage arrangements, such as the resistance of the passage of flows, the cause of urban flooding and the premature operation of combined sewer overflows, and the inevitable pollution of watercourses. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the movements and sedimentation of sediment loads in combining junction manholes by experiments. In this study, hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole shapes (square, circle) were installed to measure deposited sedimentation quantity. The quantity of deposited sediment loads was measured by different conditions, for instance, the inflow conditions of sediment (continuous and certain period), the amount of inflow sediment, and the variation of inflow pipe of sediment. The combining junction manhole that was set up a inclined benching have the considerable effect of reduction of sedimentation in manholes without apropos of the change of manhole shapes. Therefore, the improved manhole could be increased the drainage capacity of sewerage arrangements in urban sewer systems.
Most small weir installed in Korea is concrete solidated weir. Fixed weir causes stagnant flow, which leads to deposit sediment just upstream of weir. As time goes on, it would induce reduction of water storage capacity and invoke the serious water quality issues. Therefore, there has been a growing interest in movable weir. Especially, the flexible rubber weir is easy to install and possible to operate in extreme environments. However, even though this type can be flatable, it is also not free from sediment deposition problem. Thus, to enhance the ability of releasing deposition the bypass pipe was constructed underneath it. In this study the performance of its ability was examined with hydraulic model test. This bypass pipe was designed with 3 different dimensions to connect between each bottom of upstream and downstream of a weir, such as Type A, B, and C. The efficiency of drainage of deposition upstream was studied under two water of upstream and sediment heights. In addition, the ability of sediment emission through the bypass pipe after the pipe was blocked by debris like soil, vegetation et al. was examined by video monitoring. From this study, it was suggested a dimensionless equation which show the relationship of variable parameters and amount of emission sediment through bypass pipe. And it was found that the most significant factors on efficiency of releasing were elbow angle and discharge, and the ability of emission when the pipe was blocked was most highly influenced in tilting length.

The interest of sediment has been increased daily because most of domestic dam reservoir's operation time have been extended and wide basin area is the main characteristics for artificial reservoir which the speed of water flow in artificial reservoir is slower than that of natural reservoir. Therefore a lot of sediment has been significantly accumulated. In this study, the accurate topographic data were obtained using echo-sounding system. GPS survey, low-frequency sub-bottom profiler, and high-frequency echo-sounding system were used to compute the exact amount of sediment. Based on the results, DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and DSM(Digital Surface Model) were generated. The GIS system for the management of sediment was created based on topographic data on the riverbed and this system can be efficiently used for the management of sediment which caused the problems of reservoir capacity and water quality.
Anchors have been commonly used to as foundation systems of the structures that require the uplift resistance. Recently anchors have been used in ocean sediment for mooring systems to stabilizeoffshore structures. In the saturated clayey soil however suction developed between the soil and andchor and affects the uplift capacity of anchor. To estimate the uplift capacity of the andchor accurately, the failure mechanisms of the andchor by the uplift force should also be correctly assumed. The uplift capacity is usually expressed in terms of breakout factors with respect to embedment ratio. In this paper, a two-dimensional plane strain numerical investigation into the vertical uplift capacity of a plate andchor in a clayey soil is described. The breakout factor against their corresponding values of embedment ratio was calculated and plotted along a single curve. The modes of failure mechanism at shallow and deep andchors are also presented.

The low carrying capacity caused by the deposition in a sewer line is one of the main reason of the urban flood. Therefore, an efficient maintenance and management of the storm water drainage system is very important to prevent urban flood. In this research, the sediment transport characteristics through a pressure pipeline were examined with laboratory experiments. Bed-forms in a pipeline, sediment rates, roughness due to sediments were examined. Experimental system consists of flow circulation system with a pump and a sediment feeder at the upstream of the pipeline. Sediments were supplied into a 60 mm-diameter and 8 m-long pipe. Maximum flow rate is $30m^3/hr$, and the sediment feeding rate range is 5 g/s~19 g/s. Governing parameters and estimation equation for sediment transport rate were developed. The mean velocity (U), coefficient of viscosity (${\mu}$), unit width bed load ($q_b$), mean diameter of particle ($d_{50}$), unit weight of sediment in water (${\gamma}^{\prime}_s$) were adopted as the most influencing factors of sediment transport patterns. The prediction equation for sediment transport rate were developed with two dimensionless terms. These two dimensionless terms showed a linear relationship with high correlation coefficient.
