A surface-piercing barrier model is presented for understanding morphological development in the sheltered region and investigating the main factors causing the severe accumulation. Surface-piercing structures like vertical barriers, surface docks and floating breakwaters are recently favored from the point of view of a marine scenario since they do not in general partition the natural sea. The numerical solutions are compared with experimental data on wave profiles and morphological change rates within a rectangular harbor of a constant depth protected by surface-piercing thin breakwaters as a simplified problem. Our numerical study involves several modules: 1) wave dynamics analyzed by a plane-wave approximation, 2) suspended sediment transport combined with sediment erosion-deposition model, and 3) concurrent morphological changes. Scattering waves are solved by using a plane wave method without inclusion of evanescent modes. Evanescent modes are only considered in predicting the reflection ratio against the vertical barrier and energy losses due to vortex shedding from the lower edge of plate are taken into account. A new relationship to relate the near-bed concentration to the depth-mean concentration is presented by analyzing the vertical structure of concentration. The numerical solutions were also compared with experimental data on morphological changes within a rectangular harbor of constant water depth. Through the numerical experiments, the vortex-induced flow appears to be not ignorable in predicting the morphological changes although the immersion depth of a plate is not deep.
The production of microbiologically enriched cultures that degrade cis- 1,2-dichloroethylene(DCE) under anaerobic conditions was investigated. Among 80 environmental samples, 19 displayed significant degradation of $10{\mu}M$ cis-DCE during 1 month of anaerobic incubation, and one sediment sample collected at a landfill area (Nanji-do, Seoul, Korea) showed the greatest degradation ($94\%$). When this sediment culture was subcultured repeatedly, the ability to degrade cis-DCE gradually decreased. However, under Fe(III)-reducing conditions, cis-DCE degradation by the subculture was found to be maintained effectively. In the Fe(III)-reducing subculture, vinyl chloride (VC) was also degraded at the same extent as cis-DCE No accumulation of VC during the cis-DCE degradation was observed. Thus, Fe(III)-reducing microbes might be involved in the anaerobic degradation of the chlorinated ethenes. However, the subcultures established with Fe(III) could function even in the absence of Fe(III), showing that the degradation of cis-DCE and VC was not directly coupled with the Fe(III) reduction. Consequently, the two series of enrichment cultures could not be obtained that degrade both cis-DCE and VC in the presence or absence of Fe(III). Considering the lack of VC accumulation, both cultures reported herein may involve interesting mechanism(s) for the microbial remediation of environments contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. A number of fermentative reducers (microbes) which are known to reduce Fe(III) during their anaerobic growth are potential candidates involved in cir-DCE degradation in the presence and absence of Fe(III).

This study involves a relationship between butyltins concentrations and histopathological changes of the digestive gland in the equilateral venus, Gomphina veneriformis exposed to TBTCl of 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 ${\mu}g/L$ for 36 weeks. In the sediment, total butyltin (${\sum}BT$) concentration was detected ND~7.54 (0.4 ${\mu}g/L$), ND~9.76 (0.6 ${\mu}g/L$), 1.22~13.13 ${\mu}g/L$ (0.8 ${\mu}g/L$), respectively. Especially, TBT level in 0.8 ${\mu}g/L$ group was the highest for 36 weeks. In the soft tissue, total butyltin (${\sum}BT$) concentration of the exposure group was 10.14~12.75 (control), 479.29~1,286.56 (0.4 ${\mu}g/L$), 563.32~2,154.82 (0.6 ${\mu}g/L$) and 1,317.70~2,132.60 ${\mu}g/L$ (0.8 ${\mu}g/L$), respectively. Ratio of TBT to ${\sum}BT$ of the tissue of 0.8 ${\mu}g/L$ kept the lowest level for 36 weeks. The ${\sum}BT$ concentrations of sediment were correlated with ${\sum}BT$ concentrations in the tissue. In the exposure groups, necrosis and atrophy of columnar epithelial cell and collapse of epithelial layer in the digestive tubule. And there was a reduction in stain affinity of basophilic cell. Such histological degenerations was more severe in digestive tubule of 0.8 ${\mu}g/L$ group.
Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways in France to minimize environmental pollution by keeping pollutants from spreading over the surrounding area. In order to study heavy metal pollution and diagenetic behaviour of sediments, eight core samples were collected from the bottom of a retention pond located along the A-71 motorway in Sologne. The metal concentrations in interstitial waters and extractable metal concentrations in sediment layers using sequential chemical extraction method were determined. The depth distributions of Pb, Zn and Cd concentrations in interstitial water and particulate sediments were studied, and distribution coefficients (KD) were also determined to investigate the environmental mobility of these elements. In addition. the index of geoaccumulation and the Fe-normalized enrichment factor were calculated to differentiate the natural accumulation from the anthropogenic pollution. The vertical concentration profiles of heavy metals in core sediments indicate that surface enrichments (0~2 cm) of Pb, Zn, Cd and organic carbon were always observed at each core sample, due to the early diagenesis. However, the major factor contributing to the accumulation of Cd at the sediment surface is attributed to the dissolution of Cd from polluted roadside soil during periods of rainstorms and its subsequent redeposition on the sediment surface after being carried to the retention pond. A comparison of the KD values indiactes that a decrease in the KD values for Pb and Zn was observed with depth while KD values for Cd increase. According to the KD values. the relative mobility of studied metals was determined as following: Mn>Zn>Cd>Pb, for the upper layer, and Mn>Cd>Zn>Pb, for the lower layers.

Seasonal changes of topography, sediment grain size and accumulation rate in the Gomso-Bay tidal flat, west coast of Korea, have been studied in order to understand the seasonal accumulation pattern and preservation potential of the tidal-flat sediments. Seasonal levelings across the tidal flat show that the landward movement of both intertidal sand shoals and cheniers accelerates during the winter and typhoon periods, but it almost stops in summer when mud deposition is instead predominant at the middle and upper tidal flats. Seasonal variations of mean grain size were largest on the upper part of middle tidal flat where summer mud layers were eroded during the winter and typhoon periods. Measurements of accumulation depths from sea floor to basal plate reveal that accumulation rates were seasonally controlled according to the elevation of tidal-flat surface. The upper tidal flat where the accumulation rate of summer was generally higher than that of winter was characterized by a continuous deposition throughout the entire year, whereas in the middle tidal flat, sediment accumulations were concentrated in winter relative to summer and were intermittently eroded by typhoons. The lower tidal flat were deposited mostly in winter and eroded during summer typhoons. Can cores taken across the tidal flat reveal that sand-mud interlayers resulting from such seasonal changes of energy regime are preserved only in the upper part of the deposits and generally replaced by storm layers downcore. Based on above results, it is suggested that the storm deposits by winter storms and typhoons would consist of the major part of the Gomso-Bay sediments.
Typhoon effects on macrotide open-coast intertidal sediments were investigated in the Gochang Gwangseungri sandy intertidal flat on the Korean western coast. Variations in the surface sediment texture, accumulation, and sedimentary facies were observed before and after the Typhoon Kompasu in 2010. The typhoon Kompasu landed on the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula and passed inland between September 1st and 2nd, 2010, respectively. Surface sediments and their accumulation before and after the typhoon were sampled and measured at intervals of 30 m along a survey line on the Gwangseungri intertidal flat. The intertidal areas were divided into high, middle, and lower tidal zones based on the mean high-wate level, mean sea level, and mean low-water level, respectively. The surface sediments of each tidal zone show rare variations in grain size and sorting of sediment texture before and after the typhoon Kompasu, whereas negative skewness values increased in the middle and lower tidal zones after the typhoon rather than before the typhoon. Surface accumulation represents deposition in the upper and middle tidal zone and erosion in the lower tidal zones after the typhoon. The accumulation decreased from the high to the lower tidal zones.
Effective management of water resources in Korea becomes very important in recent years. Especially, the management of reservoirs cannot be over emphasized. The status of sediment deposit and the dredging records of agricultural reservoirs were examined to find out at e reservoir retention capacity could be raised more than 10% of the total volume of reservoirs in Kyungbook Province. Sediment prediction methods were developed by combining the estimation mothods of geomorphological characteristics and upslope contribution area in GIS, The estimated sediment depsit amount were compared with the dredging records for three agricultural reservoires. It was found that the distributed model with ‘Flow accumulation’ and ‘Multiple Flow Direction Algorithm’ gives good prediction results for mountaineous area.

To investigate the effects of weir construction on sediment characteristics of river bed, we conducted sediments sampling on the 9 locations near the weir, Kangchun, Yuju and Ipo in Namhan-River. Physical and chemical characteristics of sediments were analyzed by measuring particle size distribution, water content, Ignition loss, COD (Chemical Oxyzen Demand), TOC (Total Organic Carbon), TP (Total Phosphorus), SRP (Soluble Reactive Phosphorus) and TN (Total Nitrogen). Particle classification of all three weir sediments showed sandy loam that was caused by the river bed dredging. Due to the presence of weir, Ignition loss, COD, TOC, TP, SRP and TN showed similar trend such as the concentrations of upward weir had higher than those of downward weir. For the case of SRP concentration and C/N ratio, however, there is not much difference in the sediment characteristics compared to the those of sediments before weir construction. Therefore, It can be predicted that there are little effects of weir construction on sediment characteristics. However, weir construction could influence water quality of the river by controlling the transport and the accumulation of suspended materials from rainfall. Therefore, more intensive monitoring is required to examine the magnitude and patterns of sediment accumulation which could influence overlying water quality.
This study was conducted with the national river, Munsancheon, which is located in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The sediment discharge of Munsancheon was directly measured to analyze the sediment characteristics, and the results were used in the numerical model to predict the long-term river bed variation. The flow-total sediment discharge relation was derived using the measured total sediment discharge, and the results were compared with the total sediment discharge that was calculated using the existing prediction formula to derive a proper sediment discharge prediction method. In the actual measurements, the total annual sediment discharge was 5,478 ton/year, and the specific sediment discharge was 29.23 ton/$km^2$/year. The Ackers & White formula resulted in the values very close to the actual measurements. With the actual sediment discharge, geographical and hydrologic data as the input variables, HEC-6 and GSTARS models were comparatively analyzed. The test results showed that the HEC-6 model is suitable for the reliable prediction of the long-term river bed variation. Accordingly, the model was used for the long-term river bed variation prediction in this study. In the case of Munsancheon, deposition was continued in the downstream area and erosion occurred in the upstream area on the whole. It was expected that the stream would be stabilized in the river bed condition of 20 years later. The river bed variation was within 1 m, which was at the significance level. In the downstream area that is influenced by tide, however, the accumulation was continuously increasing within the section 2,000-7,000 m from the outlet. It seems that this should be considered in establishing the river management plans.
The Doam watershed is located at alpine areas and the annual average precipitation, including snow accumulation, is significant higher than other areas. Thus, pollutant laden runoff and sediment discharge from the alpine agricultural fields are causing water quality degradation at the Doam watershed. To estimate soil erosion from the agricultural fields, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used because of its simplicity to use. In the early spring at the Doam watershed, the stream flow increases because of snow melt, which results in erosion of loosened soil experiencing freezing and thaw during the winter. Also, extremely torrential rainfall, such as the typhoons 'RUSA' in 2002 and 'MAEMI' in 2003, caused significant amounts of soil erosion and sediment at the Doam watershed. However, the USLE model cannot simulate impacts on soil erosion of freezing and thaw of the soil. It cannot estimate sediment yield from a single torrential rainfall event. Also, it cannot simulate temporal changes in USLE input parameters. Thus, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was investigated for its applicability to estimate soil erosion at the Doam watershed, instead of the widely used USLE model. The SWAT hydrology and erosion/sediment components were validated after calibration of the hydrologic component. The R$^2$ and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient values are higher enough, thus it is found the SWAT model can be efficiently used to simulate hydrology and sediment yield at the Doam watershed. The effects of snow melt on SWAT estimated stream flow and sediment were investigated using long-term precipitation and temperature data at the Doam watershed. It was found significant amount of flow and sediment in the spring are contributed by melting snow accumulated during the winter. Two typhoons in 2002 and 2003, MAEMI and RUSA, caused 33% and 22% of total sediment yields at the Doam watershed, respectively. Thus, it is recommended that the SWAT model, capable of simulating snow melt, sediment yield from a single storm event, and long-term weather data, needs to be used in estimating soil erosion at alpine agricultural areas to develop successful soil erosion management instead of the USLE.
