The main objective of this study was investigation of combustion instability characteristics in a lean partially premixed gas turbine dump combustor. Dynamic pressure transducers were located on combustor and inlet section to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference at each measurement places. Also flame shape and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured using a high speed ICCD camera. The combustor length was varied in order to have different acoustic characteristics from 800 to 1090 mm. The first section of this paper shows the stability map in model gas turbine combustor. And the effects of combustor length, mixture velocity in the mixing section and equivalence ratio were studied by the pressure perturbation and heat release oscillation. Also, the instability frequency and mode analysis were studied in last two sections. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

In this paper, the radar cross section of a tank is analyzed at millimeter wave W-band. We calculate the radar cross section of the tank using the program based on PO and PTD and the computed results are compared with those of commercial simulator to check the accuracy of computations. The radar cross section is calculated in terms of the incident angle, polarization, and tank with or without cannon. The radar cross section can be reduced by changing the shape of the turret that can be applied to stealth tanks.

In this study the optimal stacking section was selected by pendulum impact test for six different stacking sections of the composite safety barrier. The beam cross-section shape was determined through the poll on six different beam cross-section shapes. The six kinds of stacking design for the determined beam cross-section were suggested. CSM, DB, DBT and Roving fibers were used for stacking design. Horizontal beam and 3:1 sloped beam were modeled by using LS-DYNA. The fall impact simulation was carried out by using rectangular pendulum and cylinder pendulum. Optimal stacking section was determined by comparing and analyzing the impact simulation results.
In order to reduce weight of a high-speed railroad vehicle, the main body has been manufactured by hollow section extrusion using aluminum alloys. A porthole die has utilized for the hollow section extrusion process, which causes complicated die geometry and flow characteristics. Design of porthole die is very difficult due to such a complexity. The three-dimensional finite element analysis for hollow section is also an arduous job from the viewpoint of appropriate mesh construction and tremendous computation time. In the present work, mismatching refinement, an efficient domain decomposition method with different mesh density for each subdomain, is implemented for the analysis of the hollow section extrusion process. In addition, a modified grid-based approach with the surface element layer is utilized lot three-dimensional mesh generation of a complicated shape with hexahedral elements. The effects of porthole design are discussed through the simulation for extrusion of an underframe part of a railroad vehicle. An experiment has also been carried out for the comparison. Comparing the velocity distribution at the outlet with the thickness variation of the extruded part, it is concluded that the analysis results can provide reliable measures whether the die design is acceptable to obtain uniform part thickness. The analysis results are then successfully reflected on the industrial porthole die design.
In order to examine flow characteristics according to the shape of the meandering low flow channel in the compound cross section typed straight channel, we assumed the representative channel type in Korea and confirmed the validity of the 3D numerical simulation by carrying out the hydraulic model. Based on this study, numerical simulations were also conducted on other types of river channel. As a result of the numerical model test (using the velocity value measured by the water depth observation from the hydraulic model test), it was confirmed that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. As a result of analyzing the flow field according to the changes in the shape of the low flow channel, it was confirmed that the secondary flow examined in the previous studies occurred. Also, it was confirmed that the maximum flow velocity point moves according to the expansion cross sectional area of flow in high flow plain. Ultimately, it is thought that it is necessary to understand the position of the water impingement (which is an important factor in river design) and the extent of the impact because the change of the channel width affects the flow.
Recently domestic drinking water industry has recognized membrane-based technology as a promising alternative for water treatment. To ensure successful application of membrane processes, the integrity of membrane systems should be maintained. According to US EPA guidance, the pressure decay test based on the bubble point theory is recommended to detect any membrane defection of which size is close to the smallest diameter of Cryptosporidium oocysts, $3{\mu}m$. Proper implementation of the pressure decay test is greatly affected by initial test pressure, and the interpretation of the test results is associated with upper control limit. This study is conducted to investigate various factors affecting determination of initial test prtessure and upper control limit, including membrane-based parameters such as pore shape correction factor, surface tension and contact angle, and system-based parameters, such as volumetric concentration factor and total volume of system. In this paper, three different hollow fibers were used to perform the pressure decay test. With identical initial test pressure applied, their pressure decay tendency were different from each other. This finding can be explained by the micro-structure disparity of those membranes which is verified by FESEM images of those membranes. More specifically, FESEM images revealed that three hollow fibers have asymmetry, deep finger, shallow finger pore shape, respectively. In addition, sensitivity analysis was conducted on five parameters mentioned above to elucidate their relation to determination of initial test pressure and upper control limit. In case of initial pressure calculation, the pore shape correction factor has the highest value of sensitivity. For upper control limit determination, system factors have greater impact compared to membrane-based parameters.

Robotized filament winding technology involves a robot that winds a roving impregnated by resin on a die along the directions of stresses to which the work-piece is submitted in applications. The robot moves a deposition head along a winding trajectory in order to deposit roving. The trajectory planning is a very critical aspect of robotized filament winding technology, since it is responsible for both the tension constancy and the winding time. The present work shows two original rules to plan the winding trajectory of structural parts, whose shape is obtained by sweeping a full section around a 3D curve that must be closed and not crossing in order to assure a continuous winding. The first rule plans the winding trajectory by approximating the part 3D shape with straight lines; it is called the discretized rule. The second rule defines the winding trajectory simply by offsetting a 3D curve that reproduces the part 3D shape, of a defined distance; it is called the offset rule. The two rules have been compared in terms of roving tension and winding time. The present work shows how the offset rule enables achievement of both the required aims: to manufacture parts of high structural performances by keeping the tension on the roving near to the nominal value and to markedly decrease the winding time. This is the first step towards the optimization of the robotized filament winding technology.

Shape optimization of tall buildings is an efficient approach to mitigate wind-induced effects. Several studies have demonstrated the potential of shape modifications to improve the building's aerodynamic properties. On the other hand, it is well-known that the cross-section geometry has a direct impact in the floor area availability and subsequently in the building's profitability. Hence, it is of interest for the designers to find the balance between these two design criteria that may require contradictory design strategies. This study proposes a surrogate-based multi-objective optimization framework to tackle this design problem. Closed-form equations provided by the Eurocode are used to obtain the wind-induced responses for several wind directions, seeking to develop an industry-oriented approach. CFD-based surrogates emulate the aerodynamic response of the building cross-section, using as input parameters the cross-section geometry and the wind angle of attack. The definition of the building's modified plan shapes is done adopting the reduced basis approach, advancing the current strategies currently adopted in aerodynamic optimization of civil engineering structures. The multi-objective optimization problem is solved with both the classical weighted Sum Method and the Weighted Min-Max approach, which enables obtaining the complete Pareto front in both convex and non-convex regions. Two application examples are presented in this study to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed strategy, which permits the identification of Pareto optima from which the designer can choose the most adequate design balancing profitability and occupant comfort.

This study analyzes the response of a tall building with an H-shaped cross-section when subjected to wind loading generated by the same H-shape. As normative standards usually adopt regular geometries for determining the wind loading, this paper shows unpublished results which compares results of the dynamic response of H-shaped buildings with the response of simplified section buildings. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is employed to determine the steady wind load on the H-shaped building. The CFD models are validated by comparison with wind tunnel test data for the k-ε and k-ω models of turbulence. Transient wind loading is determined using the Synthetic Wind Method. A new methodology is presented that combines Stochastic and CFD methods. In addition, time-history dynamic structural analysis is performed using the HHT method for a period of 60 seconds on finite element models. First, the along-wind response is studied for wind speed variations. The wind speeds of 28, 36, 42, and 50 m/s at 0° case are considered. Subsequently, the dynamic response of the building is studied for wind loads at 0°, 45°, and 90° with a wind speed of 42 m/s, which approximates the point of resonance between gusts of wind and the structure. The response values associated with the first two directions for the H-shaped building are smaller than those for the R-shaped (Equivalent Rectangular Shape) one. However, the displacements of the H-shaped building associated with the latter wind load are larger.
