To understand the phytoplankton community in adjacent waters of Ulchin nuclear power plant (UNPP), abundance and the size fractionated $chl-\alpha$ concentrations were evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2003 to February 2004. A total of 211 different phytoplankton species was observed and mean abundance of phytoplankton in each study period ranged from 244,286 to 1,221,779 cells $L^{-1}$. The contributions of microplankton $(>20\mu{m})$ to total phytoplankton abundance ranged from 42.5 to 83.6% (average 66.1%) and those of nanoplankton $(>20\mu{m})$ ranged from 16.4 to 57.5% (average 33.9%). Total chl-$\alpha$ concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.52 to $2.26\mu{g}\;L^{-1}$. The contribution of chl-$\alpha$ concentrations of microplankton was higher than that of nano- and picoplankton through the study period with exception of July 2008. The results of abundances and $chl-\alpha$ concentrations suggest that microplankton has an important role in adjacent waters of UNPP. The diminution of abundances and $chl-\alpha$ concentrations of phytoplankton was observed after passage through the cooling water system, but it was gradually recovered by mixing with the ambient waters. Our results suggested that the influence of thermal discharges on phytoplankton should be restricted within narrow limits around outlet area of thermal effluents.
Temporal variation of demersal fish in Asan Bay was determined by analyzing seasonal samples collected by an otter tyawl from November 1990 to August 1993. Of 49 species identified, Cynogiossus joyneri, Thrissa koreans and Johnius belengerii predominated in abundance, consisting of $84.7\%$ in fish numbers and $70.5\%$ in biomass. The number of species did not show any significant seasonal variation. Fish numbers and biomass were comparatively high 3n spring, summer and tall, and low in winter. Community structure, analyzed by principal component analysis using rank correlation, showed a clear seasonal trend, which seems to be related to the seasonal effects such as temperature. The number of species and their abundance in the study area were lower than those in other embayments of Korean peninsula. It seems that unstability of the sediments by tidal mixing caused this phenomenon. The total number of species decreased annually. The species of which the frequency of occurrence tends to diminish as time were mainly composed of the species which rarely occurred with low abundance.
Seasonal succession and community composition of planktonic ciliates were studied in Kyungan Stream from December 2000 to December 2001. Oligotrichs accounted for 53% of total ciliates. Total abundance of ciliates peaked in spring (30 March, 6 April) and in summer (8 June, 20 July) reaching values up to $1.9\times10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$. Seasonal succession of dominant species occurred obviously. Large-sized $(>50{\mu}m)$ species (Stylonychia sp1, Phascolodon vorticella and Codonella cratera) dominanted from winter to spring. Small sized $(<30{\mu}m)$ species (Vorticella spp., Rimostrombidium hyalinum and Halteria grandinella) dominanted in summer and autumn. Total abundance of large-sized species coincided with the Chl-${\alpha}$ concencetation during the study (r=0.33, p<0.05, n=39). Among the small-sized species Halteria grandinella was a significant relationship with bacterial abundance (r=0.35, p<0.05, n=39).
A total of 64 fish species was collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Namhae Island from May 1989 to April 1990. The dominant species were Acentrogobius pflaumii, Chaeturichthys hexanema, Chaeturichthys sciistius, Thryssa kammalensis, and Repomucenus valenciennei which accounted for approximately 66.5% of the total numbers and 34.5% of biomass of fish collected. Fish collected in the study area were primarily small fish species or early juverniles of large fish species. Only about 15%, exceeded 10cm in standard length. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance of fishes were major characteristics in the study area. The peak abundance occurred in April and September, while the number of species was relatively high from October to January. However, both the number of species and abundance of fishes showed the lowest values in winter.
Seasonal samples of demersal fish in Chonsu Bay were collected by an otter trawl from May 1991 to February 1992, and analyzed in terms of species composition, abundance and community structure. These data were compared with those obtained just after reclamation in 1986. The species composition of the demersal fish of the present study shows a similar seasonal trend to the previous one. However, the abundance in some species was changed. Gobiid fish such as Cryptocentrus filifer, Chaeturichthys stigmatias and Acanthogobius hasta were diminished, while Repomucenus lunatus, Leiognathus nuchalis and Sillago japonica were increased. This change in abundance of the fish seems to be related to sedimentation of fine particles and irregular discharge of freshwater with high organic content from the reservoir to the bay.
Our study indicates the zooplankton abundance with characteristics of water column and the vertical distribution in Lake Jinyang, South Korea. Seasonal changes of zooplankton community are determined by environmental parameters like water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids and chlorophyll a. In lake Jinyang, this study showed that the zooplankton abundance in transition zone(St.1, St.2) was higher density than in lacustrine zone(St.3). Rotifers were dominant zooplankton and among them, Polyarthra spp., Keratella spp. and Nauplli(Copepoda) were common. But Cladoceran showed the low density. During survey period, zooplankton abundance with vertical distribution in surface layer(epilimnion) was higher than in bottom layer(hypolimninon). Zooplankton densities in Surface and middle layer showed positive relationship with water temperature and the densities in bottom layer(hypolimnion) showed positive relationship with chlorophyll a. Our assumption in spite of the short term study are supported by the facts that increase of temperature driven by climate change more maintains the thermocline duration by the summer temperature stratification. Thus the results suggest that the climate changes are an important source of changing zooplankton community feeding phytoplankton. So the zooplankton should be monitoring by the ecological management of Lake Jinyang to cope with climate changes like flood plain or drought.

The spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton community was investigated in Kyeonggi Bay with monthly samples from February 2001 to December 2001 at 5 stations along a transect between Incheon coastal waters and Seongap-Do. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton ranged from 1,100(Feb.)∼404,200 indiv./㎥ (Aug.) and annual mean abundance of total zooplankton was 55,000 indiv./㎥. The spatial mean abundance of total zooplankton varied from 114,600 indiv./㎥ (Incheon coastal waters) to 16,500 indiv./㎥ (Seongab-Do). Zooplankton abundance was higher in the inner bay than in the outer bay. Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia hongi, Oithona davisae, Paracalanus crassirostris, Paracalanus indicus and Oikopluera spp. were dominant species in Kyeonggi Bay and they contributed 95% of annual mean abundance of total zooplankton. Most of dominant species distributed widely in study area throughout the year, however seasonal abundance peak only happened in inner part of the Bay. This pattern suggests that the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton is affected by the variations of water temperature and phytoplankton standing stock.

This study was performed for the purpose of monitoring monthly levels of two pathogenic microorganisms, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, from November 2005 to August 2007 in Sangsa Lake. Water temperatures, pH and DO fluctuated seasonally at the study site. Annual mean values of BOD, COD and SS were $0.8\;mg\;L^{-1}$, $2.3\;mg\;L^{-1}$ and $1.9\;mg\;L^{-1}$ respectively. Although there was distinct seasonal variation in water chemistry and chlorophyll $\underline{a}$ concentration, the lake generally contains low concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll $\underline{a}$. The relative abundance of coliform bacteria was always greater than that of fecal coliform. The fecal coliform bacteria comprised $8.5{\sim}22.1%$ of total coliform bacteria. Seasonal analysis of Cryptosporidium and Giardia levels in the study site showed that in winter (November through February), Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were most abundant ($1.1{\sim}1.8\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $3.8{\sim}5.1\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$, respectively), while in summer (July through September) the abundance was lowest ($0.0{\sim}0.3\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $0.9{\sim}2.9\;{\times}\;10\;cells\;L^{-1}$, respectively). Molecular identification revealed two subtypes of Cyrptosporidium parvum in Sangsa Lake.
In this study, we investigated carabid beetles residing in the wetlands to understand their ecological adaptation and strategy selection associated with restricted resources and habitat limitation. The species richness, abundance, seasonal activity, and spatial distribution of the carabid beetles between the Mujechi Wetlands (wetland sites) and Mt. Jeongjok (mountain sites) have been compared. A total of 1,733 individual beetles from 30 species were collected and classified at the studied sites. The wetland sites were identified as having lower species richness and abundance for carabid beetles when compared with the adjacent mountain sites, whereas these beetles were observed to be dominant in the wetland sites than in the adjacent mountain sites. Calosoma inquisitor cyanescens, Carabus sternbergi sternbergi, and Carabus jankowskii jankowskii species were dominant in both the wetland and mountain sites. These species showed significantly different seasonal activity patterns in the wetland sites relative to the mountain sites. Although the three listed carabid species were observed to be widely distributed throughout the wetland sites, they still showed preference for drier sites, which clearly shows a distinction in their habitats. The results of the spatial-temporal distribution of carabid beetles in the wetland sites reflect their special strategies regarding space and time partitioning for maintaining their population. The distribution patterns of carabid beetles in the wetland sites also showed the desiccation gradient and environmental changes prevalent in wetlands. Ecological surveys, which use carabid beetles in the wetlands, can then be performed when restoring wetlands and for establishing management practices for improving the habitat quality.

Black light traps were used to measure the seasonal and geographical distribution of Culicoides spp. (biting midges or no-see-ums) at 9 cowsheds in the southern half of the Republic of Korea (ROK) from June through October 2010. A total of 25,242 Culicoides females (24,852; 98.5%) and males (390; 1.5%) comprising of 9 species were collected. The most commonly collected species was Culicoides punctatus (73.0%) followed by C. arakawae (25.7%), while the remaining 7 species accounted for <1.0% of all Culicoides spp. collected. The mean number of Culicoides spp. collected per trap night (Trap Index [TI]) was highest for C. punctatus (409.3), followed by C. arakawae (144.2), C. tainanus (4.1), C. oxystoma (1.2), C. circumscriptus (0.7), C. homotomus (0.6), C. erairai (0.4), C. kibunensis (0.3), and C. nipponensis (0.04). Peak TIs were observed for C. punctatus (1,188.7) and C. arakawae (539.0) during July and August, respectively. C. punctatus and C. arakawae have been implicated in the transmission of arboviruses and other pathogens of veterinar importance that adversely impact on animal and bird husbandry.
