The southern rough shrimp Trachysalambria curvirostris (Stimpson) was monthly sampled from the coastal area of Yeosu, Korea from June 2000 to May 2001 and its stomach contents were investigated. Mysids and amphipods were the most dominant prey, comprising >40% of the diet in both % occurrence and % abundance. In particular, mysids were most important food without regard to seasons, size classes, or sexes. The abundance and occurrence composition of food items showed a seasonal fluctuation: mysids and amphipods were the predominant prey items in spring (33.8%), summer (41.1%), autumn (43.9%), and winter (49.2%). For small-sized shrimps (>25 mm CL), mysids and amphipods consist of more than 45% of its food in both % abundance and % occurrence. For large-sized shrimps (>25 mm CL), these were clearly dominant. The quantities and items of food did not differ in both genders, which mainly fed on mysids and amphipods. The trophic diversity and equality of diet varied with seasons and size classes. The diet diversity for smaller shrimps was highest in spring, while that for the larger shrimp lowest in winter. Also, the mandibular structure of Trachysalambria curvirostris indicates that the species is carnivorous.
Many studies have suggested the positive effects of grazing by large herbivorous mammals on seed dispersal, but little is known about how herbivores could affect the fate of ingested seeds. This study examined the effects of seed ingestion by sika deer (Cervus nippon) on seed fate in a temperate grassland established in an urban park long resided by high densities of sika deer. I compared species composition and seasonal traits of seed abundance and maturity in the grassland community with those in deer fecal pellets. In total, 27 herbaceous species were observed, including the predominant Zoysia japonica. Seed phenology and production differed among the three dominant species (Z. japonica, Digitaria violascens, and Hydrocotyle maritima). Pellets contained at least 26 species of herbaceous seeds, and their abundance differed among species. Of the 26 species, 15 were observed in the vegetation at the study site. The peak of seed abundance in pellets for the dominant species appeared 1 month after the peak of inflorescence production (but most of the inflorescences were immature and susceptible to digestion) and consequently corresponded to the peak of mature inflorescence. Because sika deer are likely to ingest seeds at any maturity stage in the grassland and immature seeds are less hardened, ingested immature seeds can suffer great losses. The results suggested that the survival of germable seeds with great losses of immature seeds may be a factor determining which plant species can be successfully dispersed by herbivores.

Based on both field and laboratory experiments, seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in the gut contents of the jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis, and its feeding selectivity were investigated. The phytoplankton in the gut contents comprised Bacillariophyceae (diatom), Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Dinophyceae, of which the diatoms being the most predominant throughout the year. Although the number of species and the abundance of phytoplankton in the sea water were always more diverse and more abundant than in the gut contents, the relative number and abundance were generally similar in the seawater and in the gut contents. In the laboratory experiments, the relative abundances of Coscinodiscus marginatus and Thalassirosira eccentrica were much more higher in the gut contents than any other algal species, while Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum, and Eucampia zodiacus were abundant in order of cell density in the ambient water. These results suggest that P. jedoensis may feed preferably on single algal cell or smaller chains of algal cells.
We used long time series of hydrographic and biological variables to examine the ecosystem consequences of a rare, anomalous event in the south sea of Korea. The highest zooplankton biomass in 36 years of sampling occurred in April 1997. Zooplankton biomass exceeded 2 times than the long-term mean at 35% of the stations. Copepod abundance was low in April and June and also failed to show a seasonal peak in 1997. Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) catches were very low in spring 1997 and 1999, in spite of a positive correlation between zooplankton biomass and mackerel catches at lags of 0, 12 and 24 months. It was discussed that a high zooplankton biomass with low copepod abundance in April 1997 resulted from unusual high temperature and salps abundance. Water temperatures were ca. $2^{\circ}C$ higher than the long-term mean at the surface. Salps and doliolids (thaliaceans), especially the warm-water species Doliolum nationalis, dominated the zooplankton. An unusual incursion of the Tsushima Warm Current may have transported the thaliaceans into the area and/or produced favorable conditions for a bloom. This study suggested that taxonomic composition of zooplankton was important to decide mackerel catches.
In order to clarify the seasonal composition and abundance of zooplankton commuuty In Macheon Bay. the study was carried out trimonthly during the period from April 1996 to January 1997. 1 species of Cnidana. 1 species of Annelida, 2 Ima of Moiluscs.3 species of Rotifera, 4 species and 4 larspecies was Tintinnopsis beroidea In the spring, Copepodite In the summer, Tintinnopsis beroidea In the autumn and Ceratium risus In the winter. Abundance of zooplankton ranged firom 4.720 to 41,215 Inds./1 It was high In the summer (41,215 inds./l) and low In the spring 14,720 inds./l). Dominant index ranged from 0.133 (in the spring) to 0.551 (in the winter). Species diversity inden ranged from 1.114 (in the winters to 1.996 (in the spring).
Variations in abundance, size and population structure of Calanus sinicus were studied in the southern waters of Korea in connection with hydrographic conditions during 1991-1992. Abundance was high in April and low in August. This species was concentrated inshore of a coastal temperature front, or around the temperature front in April. The 1st-3rd copepodites dominated in February and April, and adults in August. The mean population stages in February and April were younger than those in other survey months. This suggests that this species mainly reproduced during winter-early spring. In prosome length, the 1st-4th copepodites were larger in April than in other survey months, and the 5th copepodite and adult were the largest in February. Mean prosome length of C. sinicus showed weak inverse relationship with sea water temperature, but it was not statistically evidenced.
A total of 353 farmed rockfish, Sebastes schlegli Hilgendorf, 1880 were sampled from 3 localities on Korean coastline over a 12 month period. Full parasitological examination revealed the polypisthocotylean monogenean Micorcotyle sebastis Goto, 1894 to be abundant with infections consistently reaching over 90~100% prevalence throughout the year. A seasonal pattern in parasite abundance on the gills is evident, with the population peaking twice, the largest in winter and again in summer. While the parasitic load on the left and right gills was not dissimilar, parasites within the gill sets were found to favour settlement of the II and III gill arches. A comparison of parasite abundance with host length, revealed that the smaller length fish classes (<17cm standard body length) had significantly heavier infections than those of larger fish (>17 cm standard body length). This report represents the fist record of Microcotyle sebastis on farmed rockfish in Korean coastal waters.
Seasonal fluctuation in abundance and species composition of fish in coastal waters off Samcheonpo were investigated using seasonal samples collected by a beam trawl in 2019 to compare the variation of species composition and dominant species with previous studies. A total of 6,518 fish were sampled and classified into 44 species, 30 families, and 6 orders. The dominant species were Nuchequula nuchalis (1,542 individuals, 23.7%), Platycephalus indicus (529 individuals, 8.1%), Thryssa kammalensis (437 individuals, 6.7%), Argyrosomus argentatus (403 individuals, 6.2%), and Acanthogobius flavimanus (354 individuals, 5.4%). The highest number of individuals was found in July (2,385 individuals), while the lowest number of individuals was found in January (925 individuals). The diversity index was the highest in April (H'=2.733) and the lowest in July (H'=2.546).

Seasonal species composition of fishery resources was determined using samples collected by a stow net from April 1995 through January 1996 at 9 stations off Youngkwang. Catch data obtained from a set net using strong tidal current could be used for a quantitative analysis of dominant species. Of the 98 species identified, assemblages were consisted of $52.0\%$ in fishes, $44.6\%$ in shrimps, $2.0\%$ in cephalopods, $1.4\%$ in crabs and <$0.1\%$ in gastropods. Thryssa kammalensis, Crangon hakodatei, Metapenaeus joynezi and Johnius grypotus predominated in abundance, consisting of $68\%$ in the number of individuals, The abundance and species composition fluctuated seasonally, and species could be distinguished by life history pattern with seasons. Seasonal variation in species composition was greater than the spatial variation in a sampling period, As the fine sediment was predominated in the study area, the species composition were significantly different from those of other coastal waters of West Sea, Korea.
The pink citrus rust mite, Aculops pelekassi (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyoidea), is an important pest in the citrus orchards of Jeju, Korea. This study was performed to investigate the seasonal population abundance of A. pelekassi, and the effects of humidity and citrus leaf age on the multiplication of this pest. Relative humidity (RH) significantly affected the longevity and fecundity of A. pelekassi. Longevity was 7.5, 14.5 and 14.6 d and fecundity was 5.4, 21.5, and 27.1 eggs at 33, 75 and 84% RH, respectively. The leaf age of citrus significantly affected the multiplication of A. pelekassi. The population abundance on 40 day-old leaves was much higher more than 3 times that on 10-day old leaves at 4 weeks after introduction. Overwintered A. pelekassi adults between the bud scales of the citrus trees became active in late April; they were found on newly emerged leaves, followed by their settlement on young fruits in mid-June. The population levels of A. pelekassi peaked on the leaves in late June to July, and on the fruits in early August. The results obtained in this study should be useful for the control of A. pelekassi in citrus orchards in Jeju.
