  • An inevitable trend in the next generation wireless network environments is coexistence of different wireless access networks in a complementary, manner. In addition, mobile devices equipped with multiple air interfaces simultaneously executing diverse applications have been emerging, In such network environment, It is required that a solution for mobile users to seamlessly roam between different access networks as well as to satisfy QoS requirements of each application by efficiently utilizing coexisting various wireless access networks. In this paper, therefore, we propose a mobility management platform based on per-application end-to-end mobility management and cross-layer handover controls. Four core functional modules composing the proposed platform for end user devices are defined: Monitoring Agents, Profile Database, Decision Engine, and IP Agent. We show through simulations that the presented platform provides an improved QoS as it selectively utilizes the best available networks.

  • Super Wi-Fi is a newly emerging wireless Internet technology, which constitutes Wi-Fi networks using TV white space. A key technical challenge in the Super Wi-Fi applications is how to provide a seamless Internet service even when a Super WiFi user should give up the channel in use to the active incumbent user which is activated in the same service area, preventing from the service continuity in Super Wi-Fi. In this paper, we propose a channel handover method to support service continuity of Super Wi-Fi, in which an AP selects a new operational channel and provides the channel information for MSs. Therefore, the AP and the MSs can carry out seamless handover for Super Wi-Fi service. A performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme is superior to the conventional Wi-Fi in channel mobility delay.

  • Smaller cell size in the micro-cell or pico-cell structure brings about more frequent hand-overs between cells, and higher speed movement of the mobile terminal makes short the permissible time interval for executing these hand-over procedures. In this situation the hand-over failure may occur or some packets may be lost during the hand-over. Moreover a rapid degradation of throughput is triggered by packet re-transmission for compensating such errors. The QoS (Quality of Services) of mobile multimedia applications with higher bits rate requirements and higher speed mobility are severely affected by even shot service interruption. This paper proposes a new hand-over scheme to provide seamless services in the next generation mobile communication systems. Simulation is done to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme based on its hand-over failure rate and packet loss rate.

  • The aim of this study is to present the handover procedures and the performance comparisons of layered mobility management schemes for wireless mobile Internet. To investigate efficient mobility management schemes providing seamless information services in a mobile environment, this paper provided the detailed discussions of existing network layered mobility management scheme, including Mobile IPv4, Mobile IPv6, and new transport layer mobility management scheme, stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) based mobility architecture (SMA). Network simulator-2 (ns-2) was used to compare the performance between Mobile IPv6 and SMA in the wireless mobile Internet environment. Simulation results show that for typical network configuration and parameters, SMA has a lower handover latency, lower packet loss rate, and higher throughput than Mobile IPv6.

  • The development of multimedia applications followed by development of high-speed networks has improved the performance of mobile devices with high transfer speed broadband. Mobile internet access has made possible seamless indoor and outdoor mobile multicast services. Multicasting services are used to support efficient group communications. However, mobile multicasting services have two constraints: tunnel convergence and handover latency. Many protocols and handover methods have been proposed to address these problems. The inter-LMA optimized handover model for multicasting services has previously been proposed for PMIPv6-based networks. The proposed model removes the tunnel convergence issue and reduces router processing costs. It also makes possible the performance of fast handover operations with adaptive transmission mechanisms. In addition, the proposed scheme exhibits low packet delivery costs and handover latency in comparison with existing schemes, and ensures fast handover when moving the inter-LMA domain

  • Development of high-speed Internet services and the increased supply of mobile devices have become the key factor for the acceleration of ubiquitous technology. WiBro system, formed with lP backbone network, is a MBWA technology which provides high-speed multimedia service in a possibly broader coverage than Wireless LAN can offer. Wireless telecommunication environment needs not only mobility support in Layer 2 but also mobility management protocol in Layer 3 and has to minimize handover latency to provide seamless mobile services. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on signal strength prediction in WiBro environment. The signal strength is measured at regular intervals and future value of the strength is predicted by Exponential Smoothing Method. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency is reduced. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme predicts that future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency.

  • Currently, there are many efforts underway to provide Internet service on integrated wireless and wired networks. Supporting IP mobility is one of the major issues to construct IP based wireless network. Mobile IP has been proposed to solve the IP Mobility problem. But, in processing frequent handoffs in cellular based wireless access network, Micro mobility protocols have been proposed to solve these problems. Micro mobility protocols proposed the Cellular IP, HAWII, and Hierarchical Mobile IP. Cellular IP attracts special attention for it's seamless mobility support in limited geographical areas. New BS must be known to occur begging of handoff in Cellular IP indirect handoff. Therefore during perceiving of hanoff, packet loss or packet duplication still can occur in Cellular IP indirect handoff, which results in the degradation of UDP and TCP performance. In this paper, we propose a enhanced indirect handoff scheme for Cellular IP. Proposed handoff scheme is using a crossover node to minimize the signalling procedure and using a buffering to minimize the packet loss or packet duplication.

  • In Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWN), lots of information, such as voice and video data, will be used in All-IP networks. It is important note that seamless service for users and handoff between heterogeneous networks must be taken into account in such environments. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a SePH(Seamless Proxy based Handoff) using PMIPv6-based proxy model which is enable to improve the performance of handoff in NGWN. The SePH can efficiently support seamless and IP-based mobility by reducing the search process. The performance results show that our proposed scheme outperforms in terms of QoS (Quality of Service) such as throughput, handoff latency, packet loss, and signaling overhead comparing to the existing schemes.

  • Since the Wibro service realize mobile network on the public, it has been considered that it is not enough to support real time service at vehicular speed. The standard Fast Mobile IPv6 Handover Protocol using HMIPv6 may guarantee seamless service as long as the Mobile Node moves in the same domain MAP however it does not regard fast handover over inter-MAP domain. Thus Macro Mobility Handover in HMIPv6 was proposed to reduce handover latency in inter-MAP domain. But it is still not enough to support real-time service. So we propose an Improved FHMIPv6 over 802.16e network to reduce the overall handover latency. We embedded Layer 3 handover messages of the FHMIPv6 into the Layer 2 handover messages. So the MN is able to $^-nish$ overall handover procedure earlier in our scheme. The numerical results show the performance of IFHMIPv6 has improved about 32% in comparison with FHMIPv6.

  • This paper proposes both global and local mobility management (MM) scheme improved from Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based Mobility Management scheme (MPLS-MOB) for seamless service in Next Generation Network (NGN). The proposed scheme adds local MM on the existing MPLS-MOB which supports global MM by processing handover signaling by 2.5 layer switching via Label Switch Path (LSP) of MPLS. We numerically analyze and verify that the proposed scheme has lower handover latency time than the existing ones, such as micro-MM methods using MPLS as well as MIP and an interworking scenario between PMIP and MIP.
